DrWho
Some of you guys might recall that I had my arm in a sling during Hope last summer...Trey gave me a hard time because I was supposed to go down early with him and help with the heavy lifting! Instead, I went down early and watched Trey do a ton of work [] This Friday I'll be moving to a new apartment and I've got my parents coming down to help me. The crazy thing is just last Monday I threw out my back while dancing! (don't ask). And a few weeks ago I sprained my wrist and just today it was put in a brace trying to avoid surgery! I think this whole injury thing is getting a bit insane...I'm only 23 and I've got two destroyed shoulders, a blown knee, a weak ankle, and now a bad wrist and back. At this rate I'm going to need a walker in my 40's! I think I need to stop moving big heavy stuff because everytime I end up hurting myself days before I even try moving it! Do any of you guys have some cool backpain remedies? The Doc has me on a pretty large dose of Ibubrofen trying to relax the muscels but I don't think it's doing anything. At least I've got some killer tunes to help me keep my mind off the pain. This new MAudio FastTrack USB device is actually a surprising notch up in sound quality compared to the DACs in my Denon 3300 - and it was cheaper too []

oldbuckster
Two things...............First, use ICE not Heat...........Heat feels good when used, but causes more swelling, use ICE........Second thing, find a good CHIROPRACTOR.........wish I went to one ealier than I did..............BACK PAIN HURTS AND SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jacksonbart
get heathy (at 23 should be quick) and then start lifting light weights to stregthen joints and mucles. Also when lifting heavy objects, lift with your legs not your back.
greg928gts
There are different types of Chiropractors out there. I finally found one who really does help me when my back goes out. He is more of a sports medicine Chiropractor, and he uses techniques that are more like massage than the typical "twist, push, crack" type of Chiropractic. When I throw my back out, which is usually a couple of times a year, I go in for 6 visits over 2 weeks. He uses an ariculating table to be able to move my legs around and up and down while he pushes on each of my vertibrae with the palm of his hand. This has the affect of loosing the muscles around each of the vertabrae. Then he puts me on the electropulse machine which puts electrical current through the muscles of my back. After the 20 minute session, I have to be very careful because my back is completely loosened up. I get noticeable improvement right away though, and I'm pretty much back to normal after the 2 weeks. Don't just go to the first Chiropractor you visit. Make it a point to go to at least three different people before you make a decision. Daddy Dee
DrWho. I'd suggest checking back with your doc to let him/her know the ibuprofen is not taking the edge off the pain. It may be that you need some muscle relaxers, and maybe something better for pain. Being in pain slows down healing, IMO. For movement, getting in a pool for some light movement to relax. Trey's not putting up a big tent this year is he? sorry, cheap shot. Hope you get to feeling better. Take care of you.
garymd
Stretch for 15 minutes before doing any exercising or lifting (using legs as much as possible). Stretch while in the shower each morning. It does wonders. I've had 3 back surgeries and know how painful back problems can be. You're young enough to get into good shape pretty quickly so you can avoid problems in the future. Strengthen your stomach muscles. Lots of modified crunches, etc. You don't want to to do a full situp. That'll just make your back worse. You'd be suprised how a strong stomach can help compensate for a weak back when lifting.
oldbuckster
The Chiropactor I see is Sports and Back Injury Specialist...............Guess I should have made that clear before.......He has helped so far, I really don't want any more operations, I have had more than my share the last couple of years...............More than Enough....... dkp
I'd be interested in hearing more about the type of dancing you were doing when the injury occurred, lol! [{][}][8][] On a more serious note, I would urge you to try various stretching exercises (perhaps provided to you by a chiropractor?) in order to loosen you up a bit-I think many injuries may be avoided by simply being "loose." You may also need to adjust your avatar, as you seem more like an old jedi than a padawan!!! lolol -David
CECAA850
Sorry you're hurtin. Pain sucks. Definitly see your Dr. if you're still in pain. When you get over this malady, put yourself on some sort of exercise/flexibility program. i find that I hurt myself more when I'm out of shape. Coytee
hmm... defective body, lugging Heritage speakers around (while working at the lab) I don't think that will work. I think you are going to be relegated to working ONLY on promedias...(or bose cubes?) [*-)] Sorry to hear about the premature wear
formica
I'd be interested in hearing more about the type of dancing you were doing when the injury occurred, lol! Ditto... and including a "don't ask" only begs the question even more. I'm think mosh or hardcore dancing? [:|]

DrWho
lol For what it's worth, I do martial arts 4 days a week which involves all sorts of wonderful exercise and stretching. Gotta work on that flexibility so I can take off someone's head with a spin kick...or something to that effect [Z] It's crazy, but you'd think I would get more hurt doing that, than freaking learning how to do a shirtless dance.... [8-)] Btw, Doc says that ice is for reducing swelling, but I'm not swelling. He says the purpose of heat is to loosen up the muscles so I can stretch em out. Basically it's like a "warm up" except I shouldn't be running around to get my body temp up. Apparently my back is all thrown outta whack because some of the muscles are extremely tight - basically causing things to kink up. He also says the reason this happens is because I don't have equal distribution of strength throughout all the muscles involved with the back. Namely, weak abs and a weak upper back, compounded by a strong chest and tight lower back muscles from bad posture. So now I'm on this workout/stretching regime where I stretch the muscles that are too strong, and try to tighten and strengthen the muscles that are weak. That means a crap load of sit-ups and weird back exercises. It also means I have to work on my posture, which apparently is crap because I break a sweat just trying to sit properly! I just hope I make it through the weekend without inflicting permanent injury - and then it's just a matter of healing and then preventing it from happening again. But man, the timing couldn't have been worse...At least my new apartment has my own personal jacuzzi...that outta do my back good [] I also forgot to mention that the Doc says I've got some nasty arthritis in my joints and that if my wrist doesn't heal properly or gets worse that it's gonna need surgery....apparently I've got carpals tunnel on top of it all too. Life is such a fun trip. Gotta love learning the hard way.
