Recent Concert Thread...

Recommended Posts

Let's start a thread in which people tell others about recent concerts they have seen, their experiences, etc...

Last night, me and my two older boys, the ones that went to Hope, went to see Van Halen in Dallas. Eddie got back out of rehab and was able to perform. A previous concert from March had been postponed.

They sounded great! Although they are getting older, they still got it... No one looked stoned or slurred their words. Eddie still may be in my opinion, the best rock guitarist alive. I know some may disagree....

It was also really cool that his son, Wolfgang, is the bass player. He can certainly hold his own. He did not get the job just by his name alone!

Diamond Dave was also in good form. Strutted around and did his trademard high kicks, etc, like he was 20 years old.

They played songs from the era that Dave was there. All the best were covered.

The best part was the reaction of my 8 year old. He said, Man, rock concerts are so cool. He was having a great time, then, with about 4 songs left, fell sound alseep with me holding him. Woke him up for the finale, Jump! Even got him a t shirt.

We all had a blast.

So, share your recent concert experiences, good, bad and ugly.

Paul

I saw a Zappa tribute band called Zappa's Residue perform at Whitewater Tavern last weekend. The ugliest tavern on the planet but it sounded great. It was great hearing Zappa tunes live. The band did a killer job and the first set was instrumental which was perfect. The venue is a great spot to catch bands.

Indeed, Ron Dugger just told me he saw you at that show[;)]

Paul, I caught the show just before Eddie colapsed and it was just as you said spot on although it took Dave about three songs to really his his versus on stride my biggist problem after that was the sound guy did not have Dave loud enough to keep up with the wall of sound the band was putting out[:(]

I agree that Wolfgang (who I might add looks just like his mother) did an excellent job, bet Mr. Anthony wished he was not a buthead before this tour now[:o]

Caught the Who tour stop at Alltel before Van Halan

Def Leppard & Journey @ Tinley Park

How were they?

I've never seen Def Leppard but did see Journey about five-six years ago. Journey was pretty good.........it was cool to hear them live.....sounded really good, unlike their cd's that I own.

Ralph Stanley at the Granada Theatre in Dallas. Great content, absolutely horrible mix. So bad that it almost ruined all the music an 81 year legend could muster. Great voice is still there. I'm going to a lot of concerts of great music with horrible mixes/accoustics/etc. Almost bad enough to stop me going, but there's always the gem that gets through when all comes together and magic is transmitted throughout the venue.

I have the good fortune to live a short drive from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville (?spell?) Connecticut. They have the $$$ to pay big name performers to come play, and the theater where they perform is very small and intimate. My wife and I last saw Don Henley there, and the concert was wonderful. Anybody in the area who likes going to shows should keep an eye on their concert schedule.

Let's start a thread in which people tell others about recent concerts they have seen, their experiences, etc...

This week, I'll be going to three concerts!

First up, this upcoming Monday, will be Ensiferum, Turisas, Tyr, and a couple of others. This is all pretty much folk/Viking metal. Then on Friday the 2nd, I"ll be seeing Circa, which is a Yes side project. and then on the 3rd, I'll be seeing Symphony X, Epica, and Into Eternity.

My last concert was seeing Doro just this past month. That was a really kick-butt show and she surely puts on one hell of a show. That was the second time I've seen her perform live,

I'll be seeing Rush in July (already have the tickets).

My last concert was seeing Doro just this past month.

Doro and Warlock were pretty big back in the day. She looks just like she did over 20 years ago.

I'm ashamed about how few shows I get out to see especially being that I live here in Austin, TX...live music capital of the world. What's worse is that I live right in the thick of where all/most of the shows are.

I did go to a GREAT show a few weeks ago though. I've recommended this artist in a few threads a month or so ago when her album was new-ish. Thao with The Get Down Stay Down. I wore this thing out when I first got it. I think I described her as Cat Power, Feist and the instrumentation of Sufjan Stevens in a blender. Check out Beat (Health, Life And Fire) and Bag Of Hammers on that link for some catchy tunes. To top it off she's not too shabby on the eyes. The venue was a really cool outside venue that I've been to check out for a while. There were several levels to hang out and watch the show from with one being directly over the stage. Thao is now opening up for Rilo Kiley at a bunch of shows so she'll get some major exposure for sure.

I will be going to The Breeders show soon. I wanted to go to the Negativland show last week but I had my wisdom teeth removed the day of the show(they did a show the next night as well but I figured I'd be down for the count). I think I'll check out Kid Koala next week. He is an incredible DJ who doesn't "just play people's records" nor does he use headphones! Listen to some of THESE crazy tracks. Watch him kill MOON RIVER HERE or just

to see what he's all about. The guy certainly has a twisted sense of humor. He fills his music with crazy samples/dialog often dealing with collecting records, hi-fi, etc. with lots of leftfield jazz, easy listening, funk and basically what "normal" people don't sample. I'm definitely going to Stars Of The Lid on 5/7 as I've heard they have an amazing live show lately. They're kind of ambient but using a lot real instruments such as cello, strings...mix Eno with Kronos Quartet.thao.jpg

We saw Def Leppard several years ago in Dallas.

They were very good. Their drummer is awesome! Even though he lost an arm in an accident he can play with anyone!

In past few years have seen the Stones, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Lynard Skynard, Sting, The Police.

All older bands, but all did great!

Let see over the last couple years I've seen some great shows. These are a couple of my favorites but don't include local bands.

Ex-Girl - Japanese AvantGarde Psychedilic Rock

Polysics - Japanese high energy new wave devo inspired rock. The lead singer climbed on my shoulders for a guitar solo.

Man Man - Pennsylvania band amazing high energy band modern gypsy psychedilic mayhem. No breaks one set slow song at the start and ends in a manic pace. They are currently touring playing Dallas tomorrow and Austin for a couple shows http://www.wearemanman.com/ Incredible band catch them if you can.

Zolar-X - L.A. one of the original sci-fi glam bands from the 70's but they are really good. They look like Star Trek aliens but actually rock out. A litle cheesey but lots of fun. http://www.zolarx.com/home.aspx

Asylum Street Spankers - Brialliant audiophile quality concerts. They are mic'd just right. Jazzy bluegrass mountain music sound. Seen them twice and hopefully again.

Wanted to see Tom Waits in Memphis but tickets sold out in hours.

I'm going see Man Man on Wednesday for free at Waterloo Record Store here in Austin. I also didn't realize we were talking about the last few years. I felt bad cuz I've only been to maybe 5 shows in the last 6 months but in the last 2-3 years I've probably been to 30 or so.

Biggest disappointment......... Steely Dan Last fall, Partly because the venue sucks (Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida) I've seen the Dan about 12 times and For a band that never toured in there prime, they sure are making up for it now......three tours in the last 18 months alone! Becker is propped up on a stool and looks like he needs an oxygen mask, cant even sing Dirty Work so the back up girls take lead and it's a sin....... Fagen, looks like he's staring in Weekend at Bernies, I keep looking for the puppeteers strings up in the cat walk ! half the show he's walking around playing a stupid Melotica. They sound OK but only because they have a first rate horn and rhythm section to pull off some serious magic............... I love Steely Dan...... but I think it's time to hang it up.

Def Leppard & Journey @ Tinley Park

How were they?

Well - their lead singer was out of commission for whatever reason - it was not Steve Perry, but... someone else. So they brought in some other guy who apparently was the rave as a Journey tribute band - and while he did a very good job - it wasn't "Journey" - ya know? I had seen Journey with Steve in Deer Creek in the late 90s and that was much better by comparison. Def Leppard certainly put on a hell of a show - I don't think they have slowed down one bit, and they sound just as good as ever. I would see them again :)
