    What I Got Today!

Not what I got but what my son got. Went to see Chris Isaak in concernt and he gave this to my son.
  2. Check out this alert from Minermark (it's in your back yard): https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/157843-klipsch-galore-horns-bass-bins-in-st-louis/
  3. Here is an update on my stain job. I have finished the staining and am pleased with the results. I first tried about a dozen different colors on a sample birch panel from Lowes and settled on the Cognac color from Varathane which is oil-based. The color came out very close to Klipsch oiled walnut which was the goal, it was just a matter of getting the darkness level right. First I sanded the font panels nice and smooth and then after dust removal via vacuum and tack cloth, applied Minwax pre-stain conditioner. Then came the stain which took several coats to get the darkness level you see. After about five coats, it wasn’t getting any darker so I stopped at that point. it's not as dark as I wanted but it was good enough. I had planned on putting on a couple coats of Polyurethane as was recommended to me by Cornman, but I really like the way the wood surface and grain looked that I didn’t want to cover that up. I did put a couple coats of Watco Danish oil to finish it off. The WAF passed with flying colors – I was told that it looked like a professional job. There are some flaws in my work but they may be of the type that only I can tell or someone that knows staining (and was looking for them). Here is one thing I learned about birch – the wood can actually come out looking extremely nice. Once sanded and with an oil finish applied, I was getting light reflections similar to how finished mahogany wood looks – very light reflective which changes as you move around it. A very attractive look came with just applying Watco Danish oil finish without any stain. That was probably the best looking finish overall I saw of the thirteen I sampled. The Danish oil does add a bit of tint, but at least on birch it is barely noticeable. It was essentially the same color as unfinished wood (Schu – you would probably love it). Heck, I liked it enough that I briefly considered doing that. But in the end, I really needed something darker for what I was trying to achieve. I would definitely consider that kind of finish for other cases though. So the end result was better than I thought I’d be able to get. The picture below does not show how nice the finish is. Where it may look like I got an uneven stain, those are actually the light reflections that I mentioned above. If I moved the camera, and took another photo, the lighter areas would be in different positions. Fortunately I did not get any uneven stain. The photo was taken in a dark garage so I shined a light on the speakers which probably contributed to the photo not looking quite as nice as they do in person as well as those lighter areas. When I get some time, I’ll attempt to take a better photo of how they look without applying harsh lighting directly to them. Thanks to everyone for all the tips. I read every one and did my best with them. I learned that birch can be finished very nicely if its limitations are considered and you don’t try to do something it just can’t do. Before: After:
  4. Would love to hear them. Those are some of the nicest looking speakers around. Good luck with your sale.
  5. Very nice! If timing was better I might've considered it. I don't know the situation with your son but be careful with scammers. There are a lot of scams out there and I know someone who was recently scammed out of quite a bit of money.
  6. I do want to get a newer body at some point and prefer the full-frame cameras. My camera is actually the 1Ds which has 11 MP which is actually quite a bit and isn't the limiting factor. Only when I'm doing significant cropping do I have the desire for more pixels. More pixels are better of course with all else being equal, but you don't get a huge increase in resolution until you really multiply the pixel count. Rather the limiting factor of this camera has more to do with low-light conditions. It can't really go above ISO 400 without noise becoming noticeable.
  7. This isn't audio-related but the deal is just too good to not pass along to digital photographers. The X-Rite i1Display Pro is now on sale at B&H for $149 with free shipping and no sales tax. This is a great price as it is $100 off. Hurry as the sale is only for today (7/18/16) and ends at midnight Eastern time. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/798930-REG/X_Rite_EODIS3_i1Display_Pro.html
  8. Just thought I'd share that the X-Rite i1Display Pro is now on sale at B&H for $149 with free shipping and no sales tax. This is a great price as it is $100 off. 10. Take a bare K400, hang it from a string, tap it with a metal object and it will ring like a bell. However, properly mount it in your La Scalas -- secured at both ends and tap it again with a metal object and you will just hear a thud. As long as you're not tapping the horn while you are playing music, you won't hear any noises you don't want to hear.
  11. For what it's worth, I prefer the Cornwall over the Chorus II (have owned both). In fact, it takes the Klipschorn to beat a Cornwall for me. Here is a nice short Cornwall review by old memeber Mobile Homeless: http://home.earthlink.net/~ivol/audio/set.htm
  12. If your mains are Palladiums, then a Palladium center would be best. If your mains are La Scalas, a La Scala center is best. Belles are very similar to La Scalas, but not exactly identical. A Belle would be the next best thing if you couldn't find another La Scala.
  13. Frzn -- It looks like you have some large items inside the horn in your center La Scala. Have you tried comparing the sound differences between an empty horn and with those items inside it? I'd be concerned that those items are affecting the sound -- by being inside the horn, they are changing the horn by reducing the cross-sectional area at the horn's exit.
  14. Extremely impressive as stated previously. Of course you probably know now you can never move!
  15. I picked up a JVC projector and couldn't be happier. The JVC has the lens memory feature which is great if your wall dimensions can accommodate a 2.35:1 screen size. Keep an eye on Starpower specials -- that is where I got mine. You can sign up for their e-mail list and they'll notify you when their next big sale is. During their last tent sale, I put down a deposit in advance and they set one aside for me. Also, you'll need a screen as well and unless you want to spend a fortune on a screen, you'll be hard pressed to do better than Silver Ticket. Amazon carries them and the prices seem to fluctuate quite a bit, so keep an eye on them and pounce when the prices drop. I ended up with an "open-box" buy which was described as likely having some packaging damaged, but the screen itself was supposed to be without flaws. I didn't even find any of the packaging damaged, which didn't matter either way as long as the screen didn't arrive damaged. I'm very pleased with the screen and I ended up paying less than 1/2 of the list price.
  16. The Cornwalls are one of my favorite speakers. They can be very musical if you get everything else right. I have not heard the Blue Circle amp that you have but Cornwalls go well with good tube amps. If you get the chance, you may want to try experimenting with an all-tube setup (pre and power). I've powered Cornwalls with 2.5 Watt amps and was very pleased. In the meantime, you're current amp will probably do very well.
  17. 4Runner with two complete "B-style" Klipschorns plus room in front for two people.
  18. Congrats! Now go get yourself some decent tube amps and you'll really be in for a treat!
