  1. In some cases you may be right. But my pro gear has a great relationship with my consumer stuff.
  2. As someone who happily runs a Lascalla on its side as a center I really don't think I would rethink a Forte motor board to make my center perfect. You would probably regret cutting up the speaker when you go to a projection screen and want three Fortes standing upright as your L C R array anyway. Trust me you will be hard pressed to hear any faults with the speaker on its side. It will mostly play dialog anyway.
  3. The good part is I already have all the necessary tools to get these babies ready for finish. Since I am not taking them all the way down to wood, it will be a piece of cake. I learned some nice short cuts on the previous 4 LS restorations. I could have them ready in one afternoon (after filling the holes, of course). You are fast. It took me probably more than a hundred hours to prep just this one speaker.
  4. Many JBL drivers are the opposite.
  5. I glad to hear they did right by you. I guess all companies can change. 5 or so years ago I had such poor CS on a brand new Integra Pre/Pro DOA right out of the box that I will never buy another Onkyo anything. I did not have a replacement for 6 months.
  6. Link I would like to read it. I just read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Union_splice does not seem to bad. I have done similar with out even knowing about it and will try it out next time i have an opportunity. Worst case for a crossover failure does not have the same consequences as a military solder connection failing. This is a hobby people should be having fun with it.
  7. I have built 2 ALK kits (old style universal and Forte IIs) also replaced AA caps with Crites' cap kits. I doubt I would ever just order a built crossover from you Dean not because of your work but because I like to do things myself, and knowing I save even a small amount of money makes me feel better. I like the idea of kits for me because it is the design and parts selection I lack the initiative to learn. I guess I don't understand how learning to solder would be difficult for people, but apparently it can be. I do own a Weller S51 station. That people get in over their heads with easy projects like crossover kits and are unhappy when they cannot complete the project frankly pisses me off. I feel like they ruin it for people like me that have really enjoyed the process. There are all kinds of DIY type kits out there in all types of hobbies that are successful and for the most part people that buy them understand that they are responsible for assembling said kits. If instructions are provided with a kit that is your technical support, no need to call the seller. It is a speaker crossover not a fighter jet you are putting together.
  8. Listening is probably the best way. If anything is wrong you will hear it. To be honest The only thing that would matter to me as a buyer is the condition of the cabinets. I could fix or improve anything else, although I would expect a small discount for any drivers that were not working.
  9. My first home theater in my previous house was in a room almost that exact size. I had 3 FORTE 2s across the front a 95" screen and RS3s for surrounds a JBL B460 sub hid by the side of the couch. It was tight and a compromise but it rocked. If it was not my main system to crank my music, I could have easily lived with lesser in wall speakers and a cleaner room. At the time and even now I guess I need a system that will play very loud and clear. You appear to have a Cornwall system so you may have that covered. Are you DIYing it or are the bids you received for a finished room? There is so much how to info out there now that pretty much anyone can build their own theater, save money, and end up with a better finished product than letting a contractor that needs to make a profit do it. There are pros that do incredible work but they are very expensive.
  10. I have listened to 2-way 510/K69's on several different bass bins and was not overly impressed with horn or driver. Then heard the 510/K69 in 3-way. Man that combo can TWEET! 3-way is my preference as well. But I wonder. Could age be a factor in that preference? Example: Some of our (ahumm) older forum members that mod run JBL 2404's wide open on 102db bass bins. ??? tc I run 2404s but they are knocked down 3db with ALK attenuators. I did however prefer the 2404s to K77s even when run wide open they sounded smoother to me. I was about 45 when I put the JBLs into the Khorns. I don't know why they are not discussed more on here prices have actually dropped to where they seem like a no brainer. Great tweeters.
  11. Oh I love car comparisons. So, would you rather have a big AMC 360 V8 or a dinky little 3.6L Pentastar V6? The little one is either about equal or far superior to the big one in most every way. Generally speaking, bigger is not always better. How smart the final design is makes a difference. As a Jeep nut, I'll take the 360 any day. While I would not build a 360 or even a 401 these days (The Gen. IV GM V8s offer too much), They will destroy a 3.6 with only a little bit of effort. You can not look at HP numbers from the days when the AMC engines were so handicapped by IM garbage that they could barely run and compare them to modern day engines. I have built a 401 that was scary powerful and a 360 built the same way would be almost as good. I have driven a couple of JK Wranglers with the 3.6 and they were very underwhelming. If they put the Hemi V8 in one I would be headed to the dealership the next day.
  12. How are they be expected to know if they can't or won't measure? For all the times words like "power" and "watts" are thrown around, you'd think everyone actually understood what was going on inside their gear. The plain fact is most don't. Like the guys that setup that stage in the photo above, for example. It's a hot mess. If a picture like that turns on a person in some positive way, then they should at least be prepared for a lifetime of struggle when it comes to their own gear. Multimeters, SPL meters, understanding the inverse square law, voltage, how to express relationships in terms of the decibel...etc. These are just the basics, yet few people educate themselves about the very technology they're so willing to dump loads of cash on. So to answer your question in one word: ignorance The designers of the wall of sound were not ignorant or stupid. Read up a little bit on what they were trying to do (and mostly succeeded). The idea did not work out not because of the way it sounded but because of the expense and trouble with traveling with it. I have heard it actually sounded great except for slight problems with vocal mic feedback (mostly solved in a quite ingenious way). The same people were actually responsible for some of the best live sound of the day using more traditional methods and any fan that appreciates good live sound owes them a debt of gratitude. They really cared about providing the best sound, and succeeded back when most did not. That was before my time but later on the few Dead shows I attended always had probably the best sound I ever heard at a rock concert, and I attended hundreds.
  13. Hard drive storage has become so cheap that I can see no reason to ever convert lossless files to lossy there just is no disadvantage to a lossless file anymore. Files can be converted to the lossy formats when loaded onto portable devices for portable use. Once a file has been converted to mp3 and the lossless file deleted it can not be restored you may regret it. If your question is just weather or not Hires music is worth the extra cost. The answer is maybe. Some of the HD downloads are better masterings than any of the 16bit offerings. They can sound so much better that the cost is worth it for me. That said most are not well mastered and a better sounding 16bit version will often be available on rebook CD. To get the best sounding music takes research unfortunately.
  14. I have two of them. A 95" in my bar and a 135" scope screen in the main room. I have never wondered if I should have spent more. They are the last thing I would ever think about upgrading. The only issue for some might be that they do not do acoustically transparent screens.
  15. http://www.pknc.com/3phase_eng.html Maybe this is insane enough.
  16. Take a look at Carada. Top notch quality at a great price. I think they get over looked a lot because they are so cheap that no one believes they can be any good. They are. http://www.carada.com
  17. Beyond the payment for work issues. The brick walled mastering on almost every song played on the streaming sites makes the services unlistenable to me on my systems. I will never pay for something that literally gives me a headache. There is almost no music that I listen to (mostly rock from the 60s on) that has not been slammed at one point on a remaster, and without fail the service will be playing the supposedly latest and greatest brick walled version. I hate to say it but enjoying my music is dependent on seeking out the best masterings which will almost never be what I can stream.
  18. Are you selling the scoutmaster?
  19. Thebes, I am not sure if I am the Bob you are referring to in the above post but let me make myself clear. I cannot stand streaming services and will never use them. I am with you and hope the services lose the lawsuits.
  20. Radio stations do have to pay royalties on the music they play. The money goes to the songwriter not the recording artist though.
  21. Why don't you reread the question!!! I know you are probably just trying to help but, cleaning the connections has nothing to do with cart. selection and neither does playing with the setup!!! my response does address your post "Just wanting a lil more detail if possible." as you can see. What I suggested should probably result is a substantial improvement and it won't cost you a dime. You are very wrong clean contacts proper allignment and proper load compensation have an enormous affect upon the sound of a cartridge. If you don't know that you are wasting your time. You seem to be wound up like an old spring clock. Calm down or it won't make any difference what cartridge you purchase because if you mount it and set it up in your present frame of mind it won't sound any better than what you have now. And just so that you don't get all twisted in a knot because I did not address your concerns in precisely the way you wanted them addressed, the ADC XLM Mk ll is a fabulous cartridge superb tracker excellent sound you can find them for very little used and to prove they are so good excellent after market tips (several types of tip profiles are on the market) are available for very reasonable prices. There ya go have a nice cup/pot of chamomile tea it's very relaxing. I also found your response slightly odd. How would you know his contacts aren't clean and that his setup is not already optimized? With the money he has into his arm and cartridge I would bet it is nuts on. He also seems to be looking into options quite a bit out of the ADC league, as his current dynavector is already much better, and he is looking at MC cartridges to boot.

  23. I really wish there was more interest in this I would love to try my KPT 12 VBs and KPT 1201s with out it. Calling Chief Bonehead, Can you help us out here? I will still take my pro surrounds, X-curve or not, over the top of the line consumer Klipsch surrounds I have used in the past.
  24. The RMB 1095 is not a true balanced amp. I would not worry about that though. It is a great sounding 5 channel amplifier. Your Marantz is likely not a balanced design either. Keep in mind that just because XLR balanced inputs and outputs are provided does not mean a balanced design.
  25. I am curious about not hanging the ceiling drywall first. At least before the final wall layer. In my room I used CASCO SF-181M Acoustical flex duct. It really does work. You can not hear the furnace/AC or any noise from other parts of the house through the ducts at all.
