  1. Awesome project! It looks great - Congrats! I'm sure the overall experience will be so much more enjoyable now that you've made it a little more permanent!
  2. To be clear youth we still owe on our house too. To each their own - it's working for us. When I got into the "money business" a friend offered this wisdom - "Dave, a problem is something you can't write a check for. Cancer is a problem, if the water heater blows up and the transmission falls out of your car, that should be a nuisance; but if you don't have money in the bank and you have debt, it's a problem." So far that's proven pretty accurate.
  3. **running, scrambling over the fence - leaving the others to fend for themselves...**
  4. Call it what it is - a debt score. You have to go into debt, a lot, so the banks will let you go into... more debt. And we fall all over ourselves for this score. We decided to try a counter culture experiment a few years ago to not borrow anymore. While strange at first, it is nice now to be able to say when Capital One asks what's in our wallet, we can sincerely answer... money! No debt = muy bueno! (PS - all credit in the world to my bride on that - I'm a spender by nature. I'm just enjoying the fruits of her discipline!)
  5. Tarheel - this threads "gone viral". I'm curious to see if you'll hit 5k posts/50k views by Christmas! Nice topic!
  6. Great project! Thanks for updating - you have my wheels spinning too!
  7. I just picked up a pair of RB 81II's and I think they sound wonderful for their size/price point. The front firing port helps them push very musical bass, I think for what they are he won't be disappointed!
  8. Side note - depending on which projector you use and which wall you set your screen up on, just double check the throw distance recommendations on your projector of choice so you don't end up with a bad surprise if it can't make the image size you want from the distance you want. Projector central has easy calculators for that - very easy to use.
  9. No, it'll be the La-THX-RF-7-III-Ultra-esey... I'll be the first with a Dean G mod
  10. Sorry for your loss. Dealing with insurance companies in regards to flooding can be a real mess. All the best going forward - sounds like you have some opportunity rising from the "ashes" already!
  11. Thanks Ref, I've been looking at Sonys new Vpl-HW40ES, I've seen the picture and it's outstanding for its lower price point. My thinking is to not go "all in" on a projector right now as this resolution is beginning it's "sunset", and wait for a couple of years for the 4k's to come down to earth.
  12. Can't get your link to work. See specifically audio room sound proofing online. If you need a double wall, have an adequate air space between the two walls, and make them heavy and airtight each with its own soleplate, and, perhaps, a layer of dense, closed celled sponge rubber between the plates and the floor they are attached to. Jeff Cooper's old book on building a recording studio in a home is very helpful, and provides many soundproofing strategies, with drawings and TL (transmission loss, i.e. # of dBs of soundproofing given barriers will provide) ratings. Nothing (or nearly nothing) will stop deep, loud bass from leaking. Thanks for bringing that up Gary - I don't know what changed but I updated the link - it should work now.
  13. Apologies again for a "dual post" but I put an update in architectural of our build update and since the traffic isn't as high down there I figured I'd mention it here too. (again) https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/145598-addition-theater-room-sound-insulation/
  14. Coming along - lots to do still! I still have to touch up the edges of the paint, do the trim, place the lighting (along the upper angles of the ceiling running front to back - led strips) but necessity required we move the gear back in and carpet ASAP. So the carpet is done and the gear is back "home". Some thoughts already - AT screen will be a must! I didn't think out wire locale so I had to put my av rack where it is to cover the crop of wires/cables coming out of the wall which left me only the corner to put the sub. Not the end of the world but AT will definitely allow placement flexibility. On a "YES!" note, a friend was over and she was on the main level of the house. We had put a blu ray concert on (Chris Botti in Boston - not War of the Worlds but still) and she came down and said "oh my goodness that's so much sound and you can't even tell this is on upstairs!" I wanted to kiss her on the mouth but that would have proved awkward as she's my mother in laws best friend, I digress. Anyway - I think we have some serious success on the noise reduction! I won't give a final eval until the door is on the room and the door is on the furnace room in the corner - there is substantial noise bleed through both. But our laundry was going upstairs, the music downstairs (I put in some Toto peaking 100db) and standing in the middle level of the house, the laundry was far more noticeable than the music. I'm pleased. Again, more info on that when it's finished, but so far I'm thrilled! For now, the tv is back in the room - I have to bide my time on the projector - lots going on still with the addition and mom's bathroom wins over dad's projector right now. This has been fun and I know we are going to enjoy many hours in our little theater/concert hall!
  15. That's great, thanks for the thread! Taking notes!
  16. +1 very well said. You're not asking for a multi level Koi pond cascading through the middle of your theater room - you're asking to provide the gear and for him to do the install. Some red flags here IMHO.
  17. Started out as a firefighter which lead to paramedic school. A few years later became a police officer after a interim year as a 911 dispatcher. After eight years as a cop, I made the "natural" career path change to financial advisor six years ago. Chased down my CFP designation two years ago and I'm loving life. It was a huge transition/learning curve, but it's the best career choice I could have made. My wife is stay at home with the kiddo(s) (#2 due in oct), but she did, full time and now does on the side, hair and nails out of the home. I agree with twelveblocks - good thread.
  18. Wood is ok. I agree about the "pissing off the neighbors" slogan - I for one don't like to be pissed at mine and don't particularly want them to be pissed at me, but I understand I'm not the target audience of that slogan. I would be very interested in a logo plaque - maybe metal, black background, with the copper/burnt oragne logo. I've seen them at dealers a few times, always not for sale. Either just the logo or a "Theater powered by..." Something like that. Just my $0.02.
  19. That's sweet Youth! Thanks for sharing!

    What I Got Today!

A pair of RB 81ii speakers for my rear surrounds! I posted this a month or so ago and was able to audition, then flip the Chorus speakers and get these. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/150496-question-for-the-group/ I know some will say "bad trade" but it fits with my current setup. I hooked them up to the receiver from that deal to listen a little and I'm delighted! I hit 98dB before I realized my window was open. I'm sure my neighbors are happy for me too.
  21. Praying in Alaska. Nothing worse in this world than pain we can't take from our children.
  22. How do you like the combo of the VSX53 and Emotiva amp? I've been think about getting one in the near future for my VSX53 to push my RF5s better. My room is 18X23 with 20 ft high ceilings. So I am wondering an amp will help. Right now I have to turn the receiver up a little to hear things at comfortable level. I like it a lot. This is my first venture into the world of separates. People have complained, rightfully so, about the noise levels on the Emotiva. I can hear a slight hum when I power it up. It does not increase or decrease with the volume (when nothing is playing), but it's there. It's not an obnoxious level for me. When music or movies are playing I can't hear it at all and the amp just sings! Now I may one day become more finicky, but for now I love the lack of effort from the amp to fill the room with great sound. I would think with high ceilings, you'd really like it. I'm a novices novice so take that with a great grain of salt, but for the price, I'm very happy. Truthfully my greatest annoyance is the Pioneer iPad app that is so hit and miss. I LOVE being able to tweak sound on the fly and when it works, the app is great, but it works about 10% of the time. (different issue for a different question)
  23. Glad you're ok too. Unrelated - but we found out my dad has about 6mos-yr to live last week. (Cancer) Enjoy the hobbies & projects - but hug your loved ones everyday! Life offers these "unexpecteds" at times - they certainly do offer some perspective!
  24. Hmmm... You've both put some pretty interesting parallels up now (scrappy's copper woofer only diff pic) and now this. If I were new to the field and hunting - I'd be a little confused.
