  1. Go for it if the price is right. That Altec 511 should be an upgrade over the K400 and Al used it as an early upgrade if I recall correctly. Just run one or the other, not both. ESNs are also very pricey, if you do not like them you can sell and go back to the AAs.
  2. Like trying to figure out cell phone plans.
  3. Check these out, from the guys in Texas. They did a nice job on these.
  4. That is the key. Takes time. Also, if you find a pair do not sell them again. I sold some beautiful JBL Centurys that I fixed up. Bought a pair in much worse shape last year and put a lot of time into fixing them up, should have kept the prior pair. Do you have a back wall where you can lien up the speakers that are not in use?
  5. You seem to already have a collection of speakers. OK, so you like bass but have a subwoofer. The other characteristic is clarity of the highs. You will probably like Klipsch speakers, but the flooring might make them a little bright. Chorus II or La Scalas would be nice in that room but somewhat pricey.
  6. Since nobody has asked, what do you like about the Koss 1030s? Can you describe the sound? Also, you room. How big, dimensions, carpeted, etc?
  7. I am doing the same thing. The key is to collect a few pair and rotate them in and out and appreciate each speaker for what they are. I just finished some JBL Century's and and enjoying playing with them, but they definitely do not sound ad good as what is normally in the spot.
  8. Will never work. You have some fine equipment already. I went overboard on a two channel system years ago, realized that it was overkill and sold most of it off and I am now happy with something that is not quite as crazy.
  9. Sounds like you will change them out if you rotate out that quickly. Not a criticism as most of us here own at least 7 or 8 sets of speakers. Just make sure the drive is OK and you can get your money back out of them. Otherwise, if you are in or near a big city, finding local deals is the way to go. As an aside, concentrating on another hobby seems to make me not want to change speakers.
  10. I'm a little nauseous looking at them, a little vertigo. They look out of square. This type of veneer needs to be done by someone with a lot of experience. Shame, that was a lot of work and they would have looked great with a less difficult veneer. I hate it when a project goes sideways. Very disappointing.
  11. No. You can try, but what if the equipment is poor, or a bad room, or they are in the garage in a corner and will be hooked up to a phone one by one? If they are set up well in a good room where they can shine, great, but otherwise you will not get an accurate demo or know what you can do with these. Ever been to an audio show? Maybe 5% of the rooms sound good. If you like the KLF 10s then you should like the 20s. When I buy speakers I make sure they are something that I want and I verify the cabinet condition and that each driver is working. I did buy one set of speakers that were not set up well and I was just curious about the brand. They sounded so good that I bought them, but that is unusual in someone else's house, and they were just hooked to an old receiver about three feet apart. But they impressed me.
  12. Give these a look. The horns drivers and bass bins.
  13. Very serious setup as is with your bins. GLWS!
  14. Someone with woodworking skills can pick these up and build a set of Jubilee bass bins and be in it for less than a nice used set of K Horns.
  15. Seriously? MIT engineers are BS. If so we are screwed, these are the best that we have.
  16. Sounds like the 1970s and 80s. 0.0001 THD and peak power at 1000hz is all that mattered in the spec sheets.
  17. The knock on them is that they can either be very good if built by a detail oriented conscientious builder, or garbage if poorly built. You do not know. Are the gaps, wrong angles, out of square boards (by a good builder with a bad table saw). For the right price they can be a fun experiment as K Horns are getting very expensive. The factory Speakerlabs at least have a level of build quality that can be counted on. This thread is a few year old anyway.
  18. Kevin steered me to Musical Fidelity SS gear. If you are sick of the headaches of tubes but like the sound buy Musical Fidelity. It was good advice.
  19. I grew up with 601s. I never knew what imaging was until I bought a pair of JBls. Nice house, sorry to see a good room gone.
  20. I have made many of these in the past using Mogami wire. This is the way to do it. Very easy to do.
  21. Buy and AVR and use it for two channel. For $700 this will be your best bet.
  22. This sounds like a great idea. You know, at a concert, 89% of the sound is reflected and only 11% come in directly from the orchestra. Let's do this. We can call it 'direct / reflecting' sound.
  23. Reminds me of a quote by Grandpa Simpson, "Age gives you the wisdom to find fault in everything, and the lack of inhibition to tell everyone"
  24. Whenever I hear the 'all horns sound harsh' and see someone put their hands around their ears like horns, I think of a slimy coked out Circuit City salesman from the 1980's trying to see you some 901s. Remember, don't feed the troll. This thread is alive after several years, too much credit is given to some guy with a youtube channel.
  25. Demolishes!!! @$!* Yea!!! Through earbuds no less.
