Happy Birthday Tony Reed

[Y]Tony,

Happy birithday and congrats! You've made one more complete trip around the sun!

note to forum members: Things you might not know about Tony Reed. (he's kind of a quiet guy, but he's here every day.)

[Y] Tony is one of the two most senior active forum members. (Pzanucci is the other) having joined the forum on 6/12/99!!! There are a few members "on the books" who joined before that, but they are all no longer active.

[Y] Tony is a super guy, multi talented, a great Dad and among the few guys I could call 24/7 for help if I was in trouble.Think about it, how many friends do you have who would roll out. in a heartbeat, after midnight if you called?

[Y] There is a pic in the forum archives somewhere of the first Klipsch gathering in Hope. The pic is a small group of forum members in the living room of the home of Paul and Valerie Klipsch. Tony is the guy in the pic who is presenting a gift Mr Paul's favorite Irish whiskey: Bushmills!

[Y] Tony can build anything to pro spec. La Scala's, gopherwood Heresy's for his boss. PA speakers for my church (with off the shelf Klipsch drivers), repaired and refinished a pair of formerly abused HII's for me.

[Y] For years Tony has driven an 18 wheeler (for community service) for out of town FB games for the band at Sheridan HS.

[Y] Tony is not only a railroad buff, he is a fully credentialed steam locomotive engineer and has appeared in a movie driving one of those big rascals.

[Y] Tony has a flock of sheep to which he attends to their daily needs along with the rest of his family. This is a 4H legacy with his daughter. So during the county fair or state fair, he's hard to find, unless you are walking through the livestock barns at the fair, where you will find him camped out.

[Y] Tony has made many trips around the sun with his sweet wife and he takes good care of his mom, too. What else could you want in a buddy? Oh, yeh. forgot to mention he is a conisseur of BBQ.

Tony, I'm glad I know you, bro. Also, I know that you are a private guy. Hope I have not caused any embarrassment to you in this post. Apologies in advance, you know how I'm always saying "it's easier to get forgiveness than permission!" [;)]

Happy Birthday Tony. [^]

You right Dee, Tony is a very private guy, I had no idea of some of those things, thanks. He is a close friend of PWK and Mrs Valerie, someone Mrs Valerie really trust.

I have been lucky to have talked to him a few times and met his family once in Hope, I have always thought highly of Tony, all you really need to do is talk to him and you will also.

Very cool and happy birthday. Didn't know of your varied and talented background, but this place always has amazed me with the breadth of talent displayed by it's membership.

So as a trucker, do you know all the lyrics to The Phantom 309?

Spent a summer as a gandy dancer and just shudder when I hear the words "old 97". Nope I'll stick with the teh Phantom 309. Kinda prefer Red Sovine's original over the more popular Tom Waits version. Now don't go running those railroad crossing or you might be the one handing out those thin dimes.

PHANTOM 309
Recorded by Red Sovine
Words and music by Tommy Faile

Repeat: C/Em/F/G/ - C/Em/F/G/C

I was out on the West Coast, tryin' to make a buck
And things didn't work out, I was down on my luck
Got tired a-roamin' and bummin' around
So I started thumbin' back East, toward my home town.

Made a lot of miles, the first two days
And I figured I'd be home in week, if my luck held out this way
But, the third night I got stranded, way out of town
At a cold, lonely crossroads, rain was pourin' down.

I was hungry and freezin', done caught a chill
When the lights of a big semi topped the hill
Lord, I sure was glad to hear them air brakes come on
And I climbed in that cab, where I knew it'd be warm.

At the wheel sit a big man, he weighed about two-ten
He stuck out his hand and said with a grin
"Big Joe's the name", I told him mine
And he said: "The name of my rig is Phantom 309."

I asked him why he called his rig such a name
He said: "Son, this old Mack can put 'em all to shame
There ain't a driver, or a rig, a-runnin' any line
Ain't seen nothin' but taillights from Phantom 309."

Well, we rode and talked the better part of the night
When the lights of a truck stop came in sight
He said: "I'm sorry son, this is as far as you go
'Cause, I gotta make a turn, just on up the road."

Well, he tossed me a dime as he pulled her in low
And said: "Have yourself a cup on old Big Joe."
When Joe and his rig roared out in the night
In nothin' flat, he was clean out of sight.

Well, I went inside and ordered me a cup
Told the waiter Big Joe was settin' me up
Aw!, you coulda heard a pin drop, it got deathly quiet
And the waiter's face turned kinda white.

Well, did I say something wrong? I said with a halfway grin
He said: "Naw, this happens every now and then
Ever' driver in here knows Big Joe
But son, let me tell you what happened about ten years ago.

At the crossroads tonight, where you flagged him down
There was a bus load of kids, comin' from town
And they were right in the middle, when Big Joe topped the hill
It could have been slaughter, but he turned his wheel.

Well, Joe lost control, went into a skid
And gave his life to save that bunch-a kids
And there at that crossroads, was the end of the line
For Big Joe and phantom 309

But, every now and then, some hiker'll come by
And like you, Big Joe'll give 'em a ride
Here, have another cup and forget about the dime
Keep it as a souvenir, from Big Joe and Phantom 309!"
