R.I.P. Ray Manzarek

Actually without Morrison there would not have been the Doors. But Manzerek was the mainstay. When they did not have a bass player (which was most of the time) he played a bass line for the group with one hand, and the rest with the other. He strove to create hypnotic bass lines, and succeeded masterfully. Sorry bass players, but he demonstrated that you weren't all that necessary.

Not until L.A.WOMAN was released did the Doors officially credit a bass player on an album. Jerry Scheff is credited with all bass work on this album.

Would it be splitting hairs to point out that Doors didn't usually have a bass guitar player? Since Ray played the bass lines, even if he played them on a keyboard, he was the bass player of the band.

In any case, he did create some really great keyboard riffs, ones that will live long after him. It's sad to hear of his passing. Another icon of our youth (well, the youth of some of us) is gone, never to be forgotten.

I saw the Doors of the 21st Century a few years ago in Atlanta. I think they were using the singer from the Cult. Anyhow, I thought it was excellent from a musical standpoint but also from a video point of view. They had 60s era videos running on a big screen behind them. War, protests, hippies, etc. Went right along with their message.

They really didn't get an official audience encore by applause. Instead Manzarek came back on stage and asked the crowd if they could play Light My Fire. I remember he said "I very much want to play Light My Fire for you."

Was now listening to the Cult. Did not know of the Doors of the 21st Century show. Could have been the tour I missed awhile back.

Thanks
