Struck a nerve

I live in Texas...and this situation isn't "something from afar", nor a discussion of politics. This is probably the first article that I've read that struck me as resonating with my own observations:

http://online.wsj.com/articles/the-crisis-on-the-border-1405029753

I'm not proud about what's happening (and what's not happening). Envision 90,000 children-just this year in Texas. Katrina was a walk in the park. How large a stadium would be needed to hold that number? And no one is talking about dealing with the root problems causing these symptoms--further south.

I cannot think of a way to address this issue in these forums without bringing politics into it. I'll stop there because frankly, my blood boils whenever I think about what is happening down there while our elected leaders fundraise or generally maneuver for political cover.

The truth is, we need a cleansing throughout the government at all levels, on both sides. How we achieve that remains to be seen.

My wife's elementary school where she teaches--a "Title One" school--permanently accepted about 20 kids when the great exodus from New Orleans occurred during Katrina. I certainly can't discuss the specifics of the issues that these kids brought with them, but I can tell you that the issues would bring tears to your eyes.

It was amazing that these kids were able to at least partially recover from their issues and begin to read (...all of them...and they all were "citizens of the US"). This also put the school into a situation whereby all the teachers in the school were earmarked to be punished professionally and collectively for teaching kids that were "performing below expectations" according to federal and state guidelines. Imagine two times that number of children--every year--being accepted by these same schools opening their doors to help, and these kids additionally cannot speak the language that I'm writing in.

Personally, I can't harden my heart to reject these children in need, but I do think that the present state of affairs isn't working. That's not politics - just living in the real world with a conscience.

What we have been doing hasn't been working for a very long time. We are a compassionate people but it seems we are only compassionate when it will make the news. We have so many problems here already that we do not deal with on any level that a 1st world country would consider acceptable. But those aren't making the 6 o'clock news.

We are/were a nation of immigrants. But that was when the country was new and building itself. Now we have more than we can adequately care for. Can we really afford to take on any more? I'm not one with a hard heart, but I object to anyone forcing me to finance a situation that has been excacerbated by inaction on so many levels. If anyone feels that we should not turn our backs on problems that are unsolvable (what next, refugees from Iraq and Syria?), let them be the ones to open their homes and take them in - please allow me to mind my own business and I will allow you to mind yours.

I prefer we solve the problems we have before we take on anymore.

That's true. What is also true is that it was much harder to obtain citizenship then. America was a different country with different morals and values then. I'm not saying better or worse, just different. Better or worse is subjective.

The article is clearly on point.

Plenty of problems to solve here at home, and I for one see no end in sight to the down fall.................You hear stories everyday of people losing everything.

seems to me you have to stop the influx and then deal with whats here, I agree with the article, no one in power is willing to make the hard decisions for fear they will not be re-elected, The people it seems vote on what is good for them not what is good for the country

when I was working B-4 my injury all I heard was vote this way because they support unions and we will get a raise, they never wanted to talk about voting for the policies that support the nation

I believe that has been a HUGE downfall in our culture people are more interested in themselves, than the overall good. I am to the point personally where I believe a person needs to start considering putting up the fences and guarding / protecting the home front because that is the only protection you or you family will have at some point.

Sad days indeed :(

The people it seems vote on what is good for them not what is good for the country

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.”

“Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”

“Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.”

“I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run.”

Article says no one is in charge, no one knows what to do. I saw Gov. Perry on Hannity last night, I think he has some good starting point ideas on what needs to be done. I hope it is not too political to say a sitting Govenor has some good ideas.

The wall on the border did not work for the Russians and the wall on the border will not work for the Americans.

Maybe some kind of electronic wizardry llike "drone catchers" with claws.

In my 40+ years, from Nam to the workin class, this country is one Fked up place now. time to flush and start over.

This coutry has alwas faced major struggles. We had no money the first two hundread year: America depended on outside investment to build the country. Nations change over time and the good old days were not really that good if we compare them to now. It is true, our goverment is functionally broke and the system is really not working for anybody. It is hard with a straight face to say you are proud to be of any

major political part.

As the world population continues to increase unchecked, there will be more wars, food and water shortages. No one even talks about the population explosion seriously. We will only address serious world issues once mankind is on the precipice of major disater or extincition. I remain optomistic that when things get bad enough, nations will work together to solve their common problems.
