Nuther police shooting

The police should be trained and have available in every vehicle a rope that can be used to lasso perpetrators of crime. Instead of drawing weapons in a situation such as this one officer could simply call out 'calf rope' and the non-lethal apprehension could then take place, with the ensuing officers rubbing the criminals little dickie to calm him.

even a tranquilizing gun would have done the job - and put the man to sleep - it 's a gun , but it doesnt kill - I vote for the fact that police should all have one of these in the car for mentally distressed individuals that are erratic and hard to control-

Yes, a 'time out' could be called while the perpetrator is examined to determine which method of apprehension is appropriate.

Anyone remember the West Hollywood bank shootout? The police were outgunned. Departments all over the country have worked to make sure that a situation like that doesn't happen again. The escalation in armament and tactics are a response to the escalation in violent crime. If anyone wants someone to blame then blame criminals.

That's like saying well remember that one time in Waco when they had to use a tank? That's why tanks are used all the time now.

There are actually communities whose police departments are receiving armored personnel carriers designed to withstand IEDs from the federal government for no cost. When asked why such a device would be necessary in the public setting the officer responded "well there are those who believe in the Constitution and they have guns."

They're all over the place, we have one. I don't really see them as an offensive weapon or tactic that is killing people though.

I think we did. And we are beginning to see some consequences that were intended and some unintended.

And you can thank Harry J. Anslinger and the continuation of his insane policies in the decades following for that.  If Prohibition had not be repealed it would have happened even sooner.  The police and feds almost became militarized during that period assaulting buildings with automatic weapons and such.

If Anslinger hadn't used his BS about the dangers of drugs to self-promote a minor job into a major one history might well have been different and our police might need feel the need to approach both sides of a car with a broken taillight with their hands on their guns.

Perhaps even more so than my surprise that people are often largely unaware of the changes in society we are entering, it puzzles me that reversing the insanity that made it OK for corporate interests to kill millions with tobacco but put people in jail for life for possessing a plant that science says has never killed a single soul seems to call for endless debate.

I don't smoke and I don't partake, and I can't argue with that logic.

I am old enough to remember a different time. While the Andy Griffith Show, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, etc., portrayed idealized views of American life, the  important point is that they portrayed a view of America that was characterized by a high moral standard, traditional family values, and something for which to aspire, even if romanticized. What do we have today? Breaking Bad, Cops, and too any shows I  was embarrassed to watch with my teenager. Movie producers covet an "R" rating as they know without it attendance will suffer.

Shooting unarmed civilians, school shootings, children calling Family Services when they are disciplined, government blaming teachers for children who have no parental supervision or guidance to do homework, read, or engage in anything that does not involve mass carnage on a computer screen, are all part of the same macro issue. There is no moral compass that we can agree upon. Most anything is ok.

We have come a long way in terms of basic issues of equality, but we have lost SO much in terms of basic standards of decency, responsibility and common morality. I am not a conservative, nor even a Republican, but I do miss the world of my childhood.

Well said Earl.

Where has the countries core Ethics gone?  Is it from rewarding those that never deserved or making "everyone" a winner?  Have we taken freedom of speech so literal that it has become blatantly liberal where we have to side making both right and wrong right?  When you step back and take a look we are now at a time where anything goes with it all pretty much legal and if not, the due process will surely inject enough grey area to provide a counsel to prove it?  Is uncle Sam giving the really obscured radicals, the illegals and the non productive "cart riders" enough rope for it to never be untangled, yet just enough left free to hang us all?  What happened to never hearing any cursing or even the word damn unless your program was on after the 10:00 news. Not that I'm saying we are all doomed from this, but is it possible that this and similar little tidbits, are the building blocks of where we are now?  You're right, you're right, you're right and the guy from Colorado puffing on a number bought legally by the trading of his food stamps, well he is right too.   No matter what color of hat our leaders wear, we are a liberal country now.  And please don't think I dare bring politics into this thread because Liberal and Conservative are words with meaning and not just a red or blue word to describe a political party.  Well, welcome to the land of Liberalism, this is where we are, this is the new standard and ANYTHING goes. Its up to every parent to teach their children that what goes on and what is said, even by their teachers and elders are not all right.

we are a liberal country now.

Not politically. But possibly a bit more liberal socially than say, Saudi Arabia.

The way we use terms like liberal and conservative are too loose to have any meaning unless people give them meaning. So, let's do that. Liberal means "reform" and conservative means "status quo." That's easy enough. Socially, we are in the process of reforming marriage norms, drug norms, and gender norms. That definitely makes us socially liberal. But at the same time, our political and economic systems are ultra-conservative, and holding firmly to the status quo. We aren't getting rid of say, money in elections, or the electoral college, or the two party system, or the power of Wall Street over the economy. Those are not under any attack by reformers.

If any thing, there is a counterinsurgency - reactionary movement (turning the clock back) - against previous reforms! A good example is the reactionary attack on unions, which was once a reform to the economy!

On the world political scale the USA is quite a bit right of center. For example, we have not a single self identified socialist that anchors or hosts a mainstream news show. We have no functional socialist party. I wouldn't even bother looking for say, communists or anarchists. So, it means that 100% of all political power is in the hands of center and right of center politics. Both of our two parties are "Wall Street" parties, so even if you think they are somehow different in superficial matters, on the global scale they are to the right of center, as all business parties are globally.

I see things in an over simplified manner but I think its all the same in the long run. Liberal to me is when you have a side of mashed potatoes on your plate, yet you cover everything else on your plate in gravy.

I'm concerned with all the new "Liberties" we are giving and allowing that its going to become a 5 headed monster that is only stopped by cutting off all the new Liberties and old as well. Leaving us with nothing more than a truly Uncle Sam ran Society.

As far as actual definitions go, I think this is pretty accurate.

1.

favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
2.
(often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.
3.
of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism, especially the freedom of the individual and governmental guarantees of individual rights and liberties.
4.
favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.
5.
favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression:
a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.
6.
of or relating to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.
7.
free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant:

So, let's do that. Liberal means "reform" and conservative means "status quo."

When the wolf comes knocking at the door he don't tell ya he's a wolf.

Fact is, they both have good and bad ideas, I like the freedom to decide. I think most of us know which way the country is/has headed "politically", and if it's improving overall for our kids by going that way.

Good point.  A look upon our current status and direction we are headed can be seen and possibly judged  by the children, kids and young adults running around here today.

Great. So what are we going to do about the so-called police force that has turned into a military operation in large cities to small communities all across the country who apparently have the right to shoot to kill unarmed citizens just because they run in fear of being killed? That's what the thread is really about. This is not a right or left or center issue, nor is it a race issue. My first recollection observing this change of policy in police enforcement began decades ago and has been escalating ever since. I've been complaining about it for decades as well. Just try and get rid of the bad ones. I dare you. I just hope we're not past the point of no return.

The chopper is fueled, the bag is packed.  I just gotta figure out how to get across the border with my horde of cash without being caught.

All kidding aside. There are record numbers of people leaving the country and rescinding their citizenship.

It is indeed a cruel system, when we can see a mentally ill person shot and killed in broad daylight because police are not content to spend ten minutes trying to inject a calming, sane presence into a volatile situation. I thought the police are supposed to serve and protect by being the voice of reason, not the herald of death and destruction. In this case, keeping society "safe" by killing one of the least of society is neither a reflection of our religious beliefs, nor one of our societal beliefs.

We are lost in the woods, and most do not realize it.
