What struck me most, though, was the intentional introduction of certain types of distortion to "improve" the pristine digital capture. To me, this is fascinating and points out how subjective our appreciation of reproduced sound really is. Someone could make a career researching what all goes in to our appreciation of reproduced sound. Why does the introduction of distortion make the result more "engaging"? Why do some "hear" the benefits of exotic cables while others "know" they can't be hearing anything because "wire is wire"? I like your last sentence that we need to, "look at any system holistically". I guess my big takeaway from the article is that we need to include our ears, brain, and personal preferences as part of that system. I love this hobby!

I knew a guy who had a can/bottle opener (sometimes laughingly called a Church key) taped to his plastic tonearm. My LPs never got near that record player. And there was the guy who kept the LP jackets in one pile and the records in another pile. Teenagers, lol... And then there were our twenties. I had to replace many of my records from the party years. Yup, me too. I had The Who "Who's Next", Jimi Hendrix, Greatest Hits, Ten Years After - A Space In Time, Stone's- Let It Bleed, The Allman Brothers debut lp, and The Band - Music From The Big Pink, all stacked on my record player...I'd come home trashed, pick the stack up, flip all the records over together, put them all on the spindle, shift the steady arm over the records, hit the switch, and the first lp would drop on the spinning plater, and the tone arm would move over and automatically play the first record. When that record finished, the next record would automatically drop on the spinning previous record, and the process would repeat itself until all six records played through. Than I'd flip the whole stack over to play the other sides. I think I went a whole summer and never changed records. Those records all had to be replaced...Ahhh, the good old days😎❤️👍 5

Already mentioned in writing by Nikola Tesla around 1900, first discovered in 1952 by the German physicists Winfried Otto Schumann and Herbert L. König, experimentally generated in the 1960s... At any given time, circa 2,000 thunderstorms roll across the earth, producing about 50 lightning bolts per second. Each lightning bolt generates extremely low-frequency electromagnetic waves that begin to orbit the earth, trapped between the earth's surface and an electrically conductive boundary (ionosphere) about 100 km above the earth. These so-called "Schumann resonances" (e rnamed after their discoverer) are Earth-spanning and very weak, but always present. Our body has therefore been conditioned to them for thousands of years and is familiar with them. However, due to the "total mechanization" of households nowadays, these waves are more and more overlaid by the dirt of the mains frequency, WLAN as well as other radio signals. Although the mains frequency of 50 Hz, which is common in Europe, should be far enough away from the 7.83 Hz of the Schumann resonance, an FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation) shows that not only harmonics of the worst quality are present in the mains (that's why there are mains filters) - no, there are also unbalances and subharmonic distortions caused by the time of day, subharmonic distortions. These do not only cause toroidal transformers of amplifiers to hum or even metal housings to buzz sporadically. It does not require any great computational skills that the 12 ½ Hz and 6 ¼ Hz mains subharmonics virtually "squeeze" the 7.83 Hz Schumann resonance between them and cause this frequency to be strongly suppressed. The origin and distribution of these Schumann resonances - and what it actually has to do with it - can be nicely ergooglen on the Internet. Here, however, please from a reliable source and not from some esoteric- store and its "mystical" description of the waves with stunning effects on the humanon the human psyche or even the overwhelming miracle effect of a device. There are enough scientific papers that prove the existence

I say that only slightly tongue-in-cheek. I do fear all this stuff a bit, but know there is nothing I can do about it. Most technology is not created with the intention of doing harm, but the history of science is filled with cries of, "oops, I guess we were wrong about that". 😉

Very few LPs are completely flat; that is, almost all records pressed in a plant that does mainstream records are pressed in a shape to allow for record changer use. The label area and the outer edge are raised, or you could say that the music area is lower, so that when records are stacked, the music areas between the outer edges and the labels don't contact the music areas of the LPs above and below them. The slight skid when the stationary record drops and then is accelerated to 33/45 rpm does no harm to the main part of the groove. If you ever do see a completely flat LP or maybe 10" record (I have one or two of them), it will look funny and cheap, and likely come from a little-known label, or a country whose record industry isn't part of the Western mainstream. Where the damage does come in is from the rough handling that records typically get from the music fan who may be a bit out of it at the time, and the often poor quality tonearm and often ceramic cartridge. If it was a "component system" (Oooh!), rather than the more common "suitcase/luggage style" record player found in the late Sixties/very early Seventies, that ceramic cart might upgraded to a low end moving magnet cartridge, requiring an inexpensive step-up transformer. The stylus would almost always be conical, the tracking force would be "whatever it takes", and the sight of a record brush would be a sign that you were in the presence of an audiophile, or stereo nut, whose records didn't sound as scratchy as everyone else's. EDIT: Of course, this will all be old news to many of you, so it’s more nostalgia than new info. Hope it’s not boring. 3

MicroMara
@AndreG. André , I´m looking for a record cleaning system ( maschine ? ) Don´t want to spend a couple of thousand´s € therefore like the one that @JohnJ owns. How is your experience with the KNOSTI ? For how many records does the fluid last ? Is it good to handle ? Ther´s one from Pro-Ject available as well, it´s about 350 € and looks like this , reminds me at the Occi Nokki whose a top selling affordable as well , what´s your thought ? Or anybody elses experience will be appreciated Pro-Ject Okki Nokki KNOSTI
JohnJ
@MicroMara not mine anymore, things were tight, needed $ for bills and food when my co-dependency ended a year and a half ago. https://www.ultrasonicsdirect.com/ultrasonic-cleaner-sh180-6l.html $ went up of course https://thevinylstack.com/faq/ vinylstack is no more, so the spinner would have to come from somewhere else https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Archivist-TergiKleenTM-Tergitol-based-Concentrate/dp/B019YI38Z2/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=TergiKleen&qid=1577886210&rnid=2941120011&s=electronics&sr=1-1 marvelous stuff right there, must be rinsed off I even pulled stuff off of brand new, right after burning the plastic with the edge on my jeans records. Only new ones I got in that period that did not have extra vinyl shavings or pieces was that Police 1/2 speed set from Abbey Road. 3

Tergi Kleen TM - Tergitol Concentrate seems to be a good alternative , but can I use it with my manual handwashing procedure, you´ll know what I mean with the sponge , the windowcleaner fluid and microfiber cloths or is the fluid for a Pro-Ject or Okki Nolli Vinyl Wascher ?

JohnJ
You could do that although be careful with a sponge. It's like washing a car that's also your friend! (Grew up in the South!) I was taught to rinse any sediment off and wash from the top down. So knock or rinse visible sediment off first. Be careful not to drag any sediment over the lp and cause new abrasions.
