Marvel
Thinking this a.m. of all the tragic fires burning in so many places. Now folks are being evacuated from Yellowknife in the NWT. Hoping Thom @YK Thom is doing OK. And the pain of the Maui fire
Islander
All 20,000 residents of Yellowknife are being evacuated, and many are flying out, to Vancouver and other cities. WestJet and Air Canada have added flights and even lowered their fares. They promised to be operating for 24 hours a day until everyone is evacuated. There are over 400 fires in BC alone at the moment, and the coming cold wave promises high winds and dry lightning, which ignites most of the fires. It's the worst fire season ever, and it's got another month or more before the autumn rains put an end to it.
Shakeydeal
I read this morning that the Maui environmentalist water official delayed release of water to fight the fire, allowing it to spread further. He should at a minimum be stripped of his position and furthermore should face prosecution. Another example that global warming doesn't cause woodland fires, but tree huggers sure do.

OO1
Unreal , The island is surrounded by sea water , and water hoses needed to contain the fires ran dry
oldtimer
The electricity that would power any sea water pumps was out anyway. The power lines started the fire from being downed by high winds. The lesson is investment in infrastructure given the possible circumstances of the area.
oldtimer
Population of Maui? 165,000 people island wide. Smallish town usa. So how much investment would you think would be approved from available funds?
OO1
the water is diverted to the Hotels and plantations rather than to the local population .. it's high time for those who benefit the most to pay for the lack of infrastructure , if they dont want to , let them leave the island .
oldtimer
Headline of honolulu paper today Maui emergency chief resigns Refreshing right? And if there is to be a prosecution for any crimes then the justice system works, right? I mean if a prosecutor has tons of evidence then the indicted should be brought to trial. It is what the country was designed for. The rule of law.
oldtimer
The problem as with many places is corruption. Developers pay off the government. Gee. Think about it if you have the skills. It takes a special kind of idiot to look the other way.

Marvel
Stepson working at the hospital in Merritt, BC, has told us patients were moved from Kelowna to Merritt and they've been really busy. There's nothing close to Merritt at this time. I installed an app the shows data, maps/locations for all the BC fires.
