Christmas music

Does anyone here play anything special during the Xmas holidays? Ringo's CD, which was out of print and now is back under some different title, has a terrific arrangement of "Little Drummer Boy" (get it?) complete with five electric guitars and bagpipes. This Dufay "Mass to the Queen of Heaven" written in the 15th century is the best recording of unaccompanied singing I've ever heard.

In no particular order these Christmas albums or CDs:

Bob Seger

The Beach Boys

Crystal Gayle

Bing Crosby

Johnny Mathis

Nat "King" Cole

a cd version and cassette with numerous other people or Organ music with the last song always being the one by Paul Revere and the Raiders that ends with "who took the Christ out of Christmas."

Happy Holidays and Peace to All

Had a all blues christmas cd that had various singers on it and was wonderful, but can't find it and so I can't give you the name. Just picked up Handel's Messiah and I will probably play that a couple of time during the holidays.

One of my all-time favorites (and I'm listening to it as I write this):

"A Virgil Fox Christmas": Virgil Fox at the Aeolian-Skinner organ of Riverside Church, New York City. Selections compiled and ADD remastered 1996 EMI Classics, CDM 7243 5 66088 2 5 from recordings made on 1960 thru 1962.

I've gotten Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (2004)and Brian Setzer's Boogie Woogie Christmas this year--great horn arrangements on both, and great fidelity.

This is very fun music, a great alternative to all the Celine Dion/Kenny G scmaltz that you're not going to be able to avoid at Christmas parties!

My above all favorite is Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts Christmas album--it still sounds fresh and a little somber--

Seasons Greetings,

I always enjoy the following LPs at Christmas-time:

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" - Vince Guraldi Trio

"I Wish You a Merry Christmas" - Bing Crosby

"Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite" - Arturo Toscanini

"The Christmas Song" - Nat King Cole

"To Wish You a Merry Christmas" - Harry Belafonte

"The Spirit of Christmas" - Ray Charles

"The Sinarta Christmas Album" - Frank Sinatra

"A Christmas Offering" - Leontyne Price / Herbert von Karajan

"Kenton's Christmas" - Stan Kenton

Of course, for New Year's Day, I like to listen to Willi Boskovsky conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in their annual Strauss-inspired New Year's concerts.

Take care (and Merry Christmas),

Scott

Roger Wagner Chorale - Joy to the World

Robert Shaw; Atlanta S.O. and Chorus - Many Moods of Christmas

George Wright - Merry Christmas

Singing Dogs - Jingle Bells

What can I say? When these albums hit the "Magnificent Magnavox" we knew Christmas was on its way. Whenever I hear them, I can close my eyes and be back in the old house on Annalee Ave., wondering what electric train or Marx set was in those boxes under the tree...

I was just looking at some old photos of Christmas past. Is it just my imagination, or have Christmas trees gotten a whole lot better looking in the last forty years or so?2.gif

I thought I'd bump this thread up, since Christmas time is fast approaching. Any other favorite Christmas records?

I've noticed at the thrift stores that a huge percentage of the old LPs are specifically Christmas records and it indicates that in the 1950s and 60s a lot of adults didn't listen to music very often, more just on holidays than anytime else.

Hey Paul,

If you are a fan of unaccompanied choral singing, Christmas eve at 10a.m. central (just under 10 hours from now) the annual broadcast of Kings College Choir nine lessons and carols. Always superb. 10am EST / 9am CST. NPR..

Also tomorrow afternoon at around 2 pm on NPR (check your local stations) Chanticleer will be singing. Good Gawd Awmighty! Talk about mind-bending!

Right now I'm listening to Duke Pearson's Xmas cuts.

Good stuff.

Christmas At Ground Zero Lyrics

By Weird Al Yankovic

It's Christmas at ground zero

There's music in the air

The sleigh bells are ringing and the carolers are singing

While the air raid sirens blare

It's Christmas at ground zero

The button has been pressed

The radio just let us know

That this is not a test

Everywhere the atom bombs are dropping

It's the end of all humanity

No more time for last-minute shopping

It's time to face your final destiny

It's Christmas at ground zero

There's panic in the crowd

We can dodge debris while we trim the tree

Underneath the mushroom cloud

You might hear some reindeer on your rooftop

Or Jack Frost on your windowsill

But if someone's climbing down your chimney

You better load your gun and shoot to kill

It's Christmas at ground zero

And if the radiation level's okay

I'll go out with you and see all the new

Mutations on New Year's Day

It's Christmas at ground zero

Just seconds left to go

I'll duck and cover with my Yuletide lover

Underneath the mistletoe

It's Christmas at ground zero

Now the missiles are on their way

What a crazy fluke, we're gonna get nuked

On this jolly holiday
