Nothing planned till dinner with LF and her niece at LF's house. Time for a second cup. Out of likes already! Sorry guys. Cheers Gents

  3. Update for anyone who's interested... I have the KHorns set up in my living room. Current setup - using my laptop with JRiver 20 as a source, and a TEAC UD-501 DAC. Using the TEAC because I wanted a DAC that did every format, had balanced outputs, and didn't include volume control or other stuff I didn't need. TEAC is the best sounding DAC that I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. TEAC feeds a Pass XP-10 preamp using balanced connection. XP-10 then goes to Pass XA30.5 amp (again, balanced interconnects). The XA30.5 is by FAR the best amp I've ever heard matched to KHorns, and that includes rather a lot of solid state and tubed amps. The room is much too small. Width 13 feet, depth 19 feet. Speakers are on the short wall, only corners that work. Having said that... in this configuration, I either have to have the listening position very (VERY) far forward so I'm on axis with the horns, or sacrifice on axis position to move well back into the room. After experimenting with several positions, I wound up putting my couch on axis with the horns, so I'm sitting pretty d**n close to the KHorns. Which is quite the experience... listening to KHorns in what is, for all practical purposes, a near field environment is actually pretty cool. We're definitely talking more of a "they are here" rather than "you are there" experience, but the feeling I get when I have the lights out and the volume set to "sounds real" levels (not ridiculously loud, but realistic levels) is unbeLIVEable. I have never, Ever, EVER had a system that could bring music to life like this. There's an REL Stadium sub in the picture. I have it adjusted so the low pass comes in at the lowest possible frequency. It doesn't really change the timbre of most music (thank goodness) but does help reinforce the lowest octaves... larger room, I might not need it. But here, I do. KHorns just can't dig any deeper than mid to high 30's as I have them set up. This is, by far, the most amazing sounding system I've ever had. Those of you who've read my posts over the past 15 years or so know I've had a *LOT* of different setups. None of them could hold a candle to this. If I put on Amy LaVere singing Rabbit, I feel like I could reach out and touch her, and the rest of the band is arrayed beside and behind her... drums are simply HERE, live, it's not like I'm listening to a recording of someone playing drums, it's that I have someone playing drums in my room... a room where the walls have simply disappeared, the whole front end of the room is not there, there's just music. Sometimes when a song ends and I open my eyes, it's quite jarring... a second ago I was - uh - someplace else, with a singer and a band, and all of a sudden walls spring up a few feet in front of me and the band disappears... Next steps: I have Al's extreme slope crossovers on order, along with Dave's (Fastlane Audio) Eliptrac midrange horns and the B&C DE750TN drivers. I'll be converting to a two-way system, because (a) my hearing is pretty much shot above 13kHz, and ( I figure the simplification of going from a 3 way crossover to a 2 way with the midrange driver covering a wider range will offset whatever I lose in high frequency dispersion and extension given my restricted ability to hear high frequency sound. Will post again in a few weeks when I've gotten the system updates in place. By the way, the panels on the wall between the speakers are Acoustimac sound absorbing panels... 2 ft X 4 ft panels, 2 inches thick. Work excellent, killed slap echo and standing wave problems completely. Also, the blue chair in front of the right channel KHorn is small enough that it doesn't interfere with the output in any way - pretty cool..

It should be a nice upgrade from his Denon AVR791 and he will finally have Preouts so we can begin to look for him a 3ch amp for his front soundstage. I will need to replace some of the batteries in the Monster HTUPS. I'm going to keep the Harmony 900 and sell my Harmony One. Will be nice to have RF capabilities. I bought everything as a Lot so some of the items I don't need will be put up for sale. My wife is leaving today at 2pm to get ready for her Half Marathon tomorrow so I can play to my heart's content. Today is going to be a fun Saturday!

  12. Good Saturday morning everyone...... Nice snowy morning here in the east (0: I wanted to share this photo from yesterday morning... There was mention of a boutique coffee house by a fellow member here in this forum, so I figured this would be nice to show.... Besides the D&D's I drive by each morning, there is a small shop on the way in to town... The main store where the coffee is roasted is in the town you see on the cup label... The scone is made locally in the satellite stores of which there are only 3 that I know of... Thus one is called 'mixed berry' It is also the same town where my chef's knives are made and maintained, (only about 45 minutes north of here) and the oldest cutlery factory still in business in this country ! (Lamson Sharp)..... Time to get some fresh coffee poured and a photo to you shortly.... ......gw

  13. I think attitudes would improve if everyone in this thread spent more time in the "right this minute" thread sharing their library, learning about new music, and general BS'ing. Some of you ONLY interact on technical subjects, of which you are no doubt passionate about, but never take the chance to let your hair down and find common ground in the music.

  15. I find that there is a great deal of "either/or" thinking that is used in these debates (versus dialogues--which are typically much more useful...to all of us). My experience has been that the proponents of the "subjectivist audiophile" viewpoints want to be able to say that you can't measure something that they can hear. I've found that many new measurement techniques have been found over my audiophile experience that have significantly closed the gap on these arguments, and more are being made every day. When I read debates about the audibility of component X can't be measured, I immediately think of all those instances where it can now be measured. Few debaters acknowledge this situation--on either side. Using audibility testing to improve measurement has been the most important addition in bridging the gap between subjectivism and objectivism camps. But few if any take the high road in these debates to acknowledge the opportunities that exist to improve measurements based on hearing differences, IMHE. I also see a lot of "solution aversion" debates which seek to deny that there are issues where the responders deny the problem even exists (e.g., "global warming") but there are many other much less savory examples. In audio, there are notable "solution aversion" discussions such as: ability of ABX testing to determine true differences in fidelity of hi-fi components (i.e., anti-ABX testing bias) audibility of time alignment of drivers and loudspeakers in arrays audibility of characteristics of piece parts used in passive crossovers audibility of "analog-only" components (i.e., the anti-digital bias, including phonograph records, etc.) audibility of high-priced-but-minor components such as cables, DACs, disc media formats, power conditioners, etc. audibility of direct radiating woofer modulation distortion audibility of straight vs. folded horn bass bins audibility of high frequency chatter in compression drivers audibility of different profiles of bass, midrange, and high frequency horns audibility of loudspeaker toe-in audibility of room acoustics (i.e., the degree of possible improvement available by paying attention to in-room acoustics) etc. All these instances are characterized by one group of people not wanting the solution instead of discussing the merits of the argument and the sonic differences heard. In all cases, human hearing has to be the final determinant of the merit of hardware or software characteristics. How can we be sure that it can be heard? Why, we must test it using at least our hearing, right? But if you're in the anti-ABX camp, you don't want the solution, so you attack the only true means necessary (and mutually acceptable) to identify differences. I don't know about you, but if someone can show me that I can't hear the difference that I thought I could hear, I'll thank them for saving me money that can now spend on other more important equipment or higher fidelity music. 21. This place is always off and on, to me it seems slower in the spring as weather get's better, people are busier. Not being one of the technical people here (no interest) or much into HT I tend to post more in the off topic areas. I never argue about technical stuff, I may have an opinion but it's usually from something I tried that worked or didn't. When someone claims to know everything about a subject or demand their opinion is the only fact I would rather just not post, I figure with all the experience here most people know BS when they read it. Overall there are many good people here, having had a chance to meet many in person it's a really good group, this make it easier to put up with an occasional attitude, no one's perfect even if they don't realize it at times.

Just so you all know -- this photo of the Pacific is NOT actual size.

  38. I agree that the forum has undergone a change in makeup/contribution within the last year. I suppose that Klipsch corporation is okay with the way the forum has changed since there doesn't seem to be much comment or policy with regard to this (unlike many other audio forums). I too find that most contributors here now don't really use the forum for discussions on audio. I don't presently see any swinging back towards technical discussions that you describe anytime soon. I personally don't use this forum as a personal Facebook page, which is something that I don't have and never intend to acquire. My personal conversations--including off topic smalltalk--aren't found online. The problem that you state Earl is that this Facebook-like behavior on the Klipsch technical sub-forums tends to run off good technical contributors, and doesn't attract new technical contributors with knowledgeable audio backgrounds. It would be nice if the contributors here that are not asking real technical questions or trying to answer the questions would find other threads to fill with irrelevant comment. I don't have a solution that keeps the technical contributors here: they vote by leaving (and have). One of the best Klipsch engineers (Roy D.) tried to contribute here again this summer but has since left the forum again due to stray comments and poor social skills by others on the forum. It's a great loss IMO--for that's where I really learn more about audio. Chris I certainly disagree that FB like behavior on sub forums tends to run off good technical contributors. The most popular and longest running threads have been the feel good threads such as 3 Minutes To Miller Time, Right This Minute, and Cables And Coffee. Places where the non technical members can contribute and feel they are a part of the forum. Just maybe along the way they may learn something about tech. The forum is divided into sub forums for just this reason. If you don't like it in the "Lounge" don't go there. Please provide the names of the technical writers who were offended by non technical post and left the forum. I have been here going on ten years and only know of a couple technical contributors who have left and not for FB like post I might add. If Roy had sent me a note to say my coffee discussion was annoying him I would certainly have given that position some consideration. Shoot....we even have Mark using emoticons these days! What I enjoy is feeling good in the "Coffee" thread but occasionally going to the 2 Channel forum to see what the "big boys" are chatting about. Heck Chris I have learned some neat things about digital and the data base threads from your post and am glad you contribute. You are certainly a resource to this forum as is the timid newbie who wants to ask questions that have been asked a hundred times or wants to say his family member is ill, or that his beloved pet has passed on. This is a community with many different needs and abilities. I think we do a great job of providing space for everyone who wants to contribute. Long live the forum. I recommend rereading the highlighted text, above. I have no problem with your threads...and I'm very surprised if you think that I do. What I was talking about was off-topic posts on technical threads, of which I don't remember a single instance by you of doing. My posting above was only in support of Earl's (the OP's) original comments and is provided in that spirit to support his observations. I believe that he is perceptive. But I offer no recommendations, unfortunately...only support. If you took this as an attack on your postings then let me first apologize for any possible misunderstandings of implied intent, and also assure you that you are not part of that discussion. In fact, I'm somewhat amazed at your taking my comments the way that you apparently did. As far as you not seeing those instances or people affected that don't presently post here any more, then you probably have no issue with the status quo of the forum and I'm happy for you. However, I see it. I don't believe that enumerating any more instances and names is going to change anything or convince you, but rather only to fuel a "he said, she said" argument--of which Earl commented on above. I prefer instead simply to confirm his observations. Chris

  45. I am in the peaks & valleys group, holidays & winter drives down participation. However I have to state that the loss of Boxx showed the true value of this forum. A genuine expression of grief for a man most of us did not know & an outpouring of generosity in his memory. I also would say the support shown to Joe during his recent troubles was inspiring as well. THOSE are the reasons I hang around here, a community of knuckleheads worth spending time with, learning from and occasionally trading barbs with. As to money to be spent on new equipment, you guys have spent all of mine already.

  46. i’ve noticed over the years that this place has peaks and valleys … there are times, it is quite boring. Then it seems to pick up. i’m probably one of the guilty ones weighing on your patience … as i just don’t enjoy being too serious for too long. I grew up in the principal’s office, was once banned at work from talking to people outside of the organization without my wording being approved by a manager--not for rudeness or profanity or anything out of taste (okay, i asked a rep from one of the local cities to please get me the info as soon as he could because that would get my boss off my back and my boss found out what i said) … I’ve been lectured on this forum for making a joke when the poster was asking a technical question -- I mean no harm to anyone and never intentionally try to upset anyone; i would just rather go through life laughing as much as possible because the crap that i’ve had to deal with would crush me if i don’t. I personally have no expectations from the forum -- just a place to “talk” if we want; or see what other people have to say … about whatever. I just don’t like mean and have seen that a couple of times here; but far more times have made some friends.
