  1. My wife is not a morning person and usually sleeps in until around 10am on the weekends. I get up around 6:30am seven days a week. I do enjoy the quiet time out in the sun room, some fresh brew, reading the latest issue of Stereophile, and listening to some tunes. It is a bit therapeutic after another week of work. Life is good.

  5. I would think Native's have to be tough, if not they would never last, that's not normal cold it's cold that could kill you if your not prepared. Her brother and his wife headed south a couple of months ago and was really having rough time with the heat this time of year in the south. They went through the high desert of the southwest and headed east. By the time they got to Texas they thought they were going to die, now there here and somewhat slightly getting use to finding shade and avoiding the hottest part of the day. There doing pretty good considering where they came from and will be moving on the beginning of the week heading up towards Tennessee and the east coast. There plans are to head down to the Florida Keys as winter comes. He said they do NOT want to see winter even in Tennessee or North Carolina, they had enough cold already. The crazy part is his wife moved to Fairbanks AK from Hawaii that had to be a drastic change. But she said it was beautiful and she liked it but they were both ready to move on .

  6. Yes the wifes do have good input when we listen. Wife was prodding me for the last year, get out and do something every weekend one day at least. We do a three mile walk, local (huge) swapmeet fits the bill and just started doing this last month. She likes the walk, i like the corndog.

  7. Mornin' all. Gonna hit the yardwork for a while and then we're heading out to a local festival with live music, circus acts, etc. Looks like fun. My better half insists that we get out of the house and take in a new event or location every weekend and she's right ... it's fun and good for us. Lots to do when we take the time to figure it out in advance. Have a great Saturday and +1 to Chuck's (Tarheel's) cheers.

  9. 20 years ago I bought an apple crate full of 12 awg lamp cord for $5. That cord has provided a lot of audio bliss over these many years.

  10. I knew we would get around to discussing cables....might of taken 520 pages but we are there Don't spend much money on equipment or music for that matter since retiring early.....meaning little discretionary funds. My cables are run of the mill Best Buy mess. I do trust Luther's opinion because he is diligent and does his homework. Add to that his ears are most likely better than mine. So if there must be a side I'll side with Luther. There have only been a couple of areas regarding equipment that I have felt pretty sure about. That the K-400 horn hurt my ears (in my application) leading to listening fatique in short order. The other Tarheelism is that speakers are the component that will make the biggest difference one way or the other. So that's about all I know about that and of course feel free to disagree.

  11. A while back I found this quote that was attributed to Bob Katz, engineer of the Chesky recordings: "It is important to realize that ABX tests and psychoacoustic studies and FFT measurements and subjective listening tests are each one-dimensional attempts to describe or analyze our experience of music listening. But music listening is a holistic, multidimensional experience that includes emotions, reactions, and involvement in the music. As scientists, it is important for us to remain cognizant of the fact that we are always looking through a small window on a very complex experience and to remain forever skeptical of our own conclusions and methods and as well as remain open-minded about the conclusions of others."

  12. First off, let me say up front that I consider myself an audio enthusiast and not an audiophile. While I enjoy the hobby, I don't take it all that seriously. So to answer your question, I will say that it depends. For most people cables will not make an audible difference. For a high resolution system, cables can make a difference, but not all cables. There is no one size fits all. Every system is different with strengths and weaknesses. Not only the gear that is used but maybe even more importantly the room. Also, we all have a preference on how we like our music; some want lots of bass, while others are more into midrange vocals or top end detail. It becomes a matrix of inputs that determine the systems synergy. You could quote specs all day but music for me is an emotional experience and not some sine wave flat from 20 - 20,000 Hz.So you see it isn't a simple answer of yes. It becomes a much more complicated mix of more questions and answers to determine what is the desired result and how to best to get there. Things like are your amps current hungry and need larger guage wire to feed them. Are your tube amps a little to soft for your speakers and need something to brighten them up. And even then it gets more complicated when changing one thing may affect something else. Think of it like the old time way of balancing the tire on a car. There is a cap that fits the face of the wheel. It has several knobs sticking out of the middle of it. You spin the tire and turn these knobs to determine how much weight and where on the tire it goes. Not a simple task as each change in weight changes where it needs to go. Some turns of the knobs make think worse. Some make it better. Hence the term of dialing it in.

  13. I received this news last night....https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/158442-hope-gathering-2016/page-2#entry1913222 Couldn't be happier! Seems like lots of our members are making plans to attend this year's April gathering in Hope. If you read through that entire thread you will see we have a great crowd making plans to attend, and it's still eight months out! Absolutely love that so many will be first time attendees!!!! I'm thinking we should have a door prize for the member that travels the longest distance to be with us!!!!

  14. Morning Gang 100+ today predicted all week. Left the Cave door open last night w/fan, currently 70 and will close it up soon. Cave will not get above 86 at the hot part of the day. 86 w/fan i can work with. Waiting on CL responses as to my bids on Lathes, looked at one yesterday, price was right, 400+Lbs is just a tad too big. Mr Crow in limbo as to the waiting on "new" part(s) upgrade. I see Ward is into reading "Stereophile" so tell me Ward, do you think cables make a difference ? Just a friendly question. Coffee should be done, time to wake up....

  19. Got everything up and running and the RTR was a little muted and had some hiss. Got my head cleaner out did a little cleaning and it started singing. I have a akai 202d I have been using and this one sounds even better. Always loved RTR since I saw this one when I was about 9 or 10 at my uncles house. Going to play around with the Quadrophonic conversion box later today. He has several tapes that are factory recorded in quadrophonic this should be fun. Trying to figure out how I am going to hook it up to my xmc-1? Was thinking I would use the 7.1 inputs in direct mode? The Sansui had a little scratching in the volume knob, a little deoxit spray and everything is working great. Just so excited that I have some of the gear that I first heard as a kid that got me started in this hobby. The fact that it is from someone that I was very close to growing up, just makes it so special to me. My uncle was like a second dad to me growing up, he would take me hunting and fishing when my father couldn't.

  21. Another one from Rich Carlson: “One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t. When we make this mistake we tend to spend a lot of time wallowing and/or complaining about what’s wrong with life. “It’s not fair,” we complain, not realizing that, perhaps, it was never intended to be fair."

  22. Nice topics everyone !! I enjoyed reading through the morning's posts... Thebes will straighten everyone out on cables and send them in the right direction NOW, a birdie update...........just looked in the house this morning, and the 3 little wrens are GONE, flown off, with only one single egg left unhatched, possible it was not fertile ... Ok, about to head for the theater for show #2 Sorry, no streaming, I didn't even try for wifi.... perhaps tonight. The stage setup is really very nice! The backdrop curtain is WHITE and LED lighting from the bottom, so it can be ANY color the lighting tech wants for a backdrop.. I took a photo while it was BLUE... Enjoy the day my friends..... I will be checking in tomorrow, which is a packup day, clean the suv day, get everything ready for 4am. departure to N.C. on Monday morning..... .............Gary

  23. Damn Mark....to bad your so far away......I picked up three mini lathes last year. Some really cool one's. I just sold the last one this year. It was a nice old Atlas with a shitt load of tooling still new in the box. I listed it on CL and it was gone the next day. I almost kept it cuz it was so cool....but I have so much equipment and I really didn't have a use for it.In the next few weeks I'll be getting a larger South Bend....I think it has a 3' bed on it.....got lots of tooling with that also. I got all this stuff from a lady who's husband past.....she made me a deal on the lot. I still have stuff I have to get out of her house. I stop over every month or two and pick up a load. I'll post later about all the old audio gear that's over there..... MKP :-) South bend is exactly what im bidding on at this time. I shipped my machines to the new Hanger earlier this year, they wheigh the most during a move coming up. Clausing 52" Lathe, Bridgeport mill w/full tooling for both, these were my dads, so i have pretty much a full machine shop already. Just need a hobbyist lathe for plastic/light metal. We will see how my CL goes.

  32. First and Foremost...To all...Flipping Cheers LOL Now for my "Just Smack Me Stupid" Episode....Leave NOW if this reminds you of YOU!!! I get home from a kick butt day at work, I turn on system, "Like I always do" come back 15 min later launch Pure Music, find an album and a song double click it and turn up volume on the Preamp....Nothing...No Sound... Immediately I go into "WTF Mode"...I go through all the settings for Pure Music nothing has changed. I completely remove Pure Music "This is not recommend By Channel D", this is what they say and I should have listened "As far as reloading or reinstalling the Pure Music application or audio device drivers, it is extremely, extremely, *extremely* unlikely that the application file or other software could become damaged (the only case would be if it were deliberately modified, or if there were problems with the hard drive, in which case other computer problems would be apparent), and so reinstalling isn't a very useful thing to do.". I notice the DAC input screen is at EAS/EBU...Flipping I feels so Flipping stupid "Drink a Beer" Dumb ***....LOL..... I selected USB on the DAC.....Awwwwwww there's that SOUND....Okay folks I screwed with this for at least 2 Hours till I figured out what was going on...."Just Smack Me Stupid" LOL

  33. Just popped a top on a Beck's Sapphire German Sapphire Hops. Last of a six had leftover to try after about finishing mowing just now. It will call for another but, may be finished for the day. Unless I take a ride. Try not to get 3 sails in the wind on Friday nights, as weekend job of driving. Tastes a bit like Strohs, which was an amber beer tasting similar to this flavor of Becks. Never really cared for Stoh's,even on tap if history is the same. Was like getting a bad beer(oyster) many years ago, when I drank daily, at the time. Anyway, maybe one won't make me sick, lol! Think they about tripped me after boilermaking with my friend's diet beer and his cheap-arse liquors a couple of Fridays ago. When I used to drink beer daily never really had a hangover, but now... Guess I bullet pointed this, lol!

  36. 70s i was all over the SS, like tubes, they do some things well. 80s with the help of friends, we all found out SS for the Bass, Tubes for the tuning quality we were looking for. We were Bi-Amping an did not even know the meaning of the word. 82 thru now and forever i will BI-Amp the exact same way. More than enough power/Quality to pizz off every living thing aroud you WITHOUT overdriving either amp(s).

  38. Ahem... I personally understand and recommend fully active systems for surround sound: just look at your local "high tech" movie theaters and other higher fidelity surround sound venues nowadays--that's what they are. The performance/price ratio is now becoming viable to replace the prior ways of doing things. In fact, passive crossovers are typically only used in static PA systems that are subjected to the elements in open stadiums, etc., where weather-ability and upgrade of prior emplaced (A.K.A., old) PA horns and line arrays subject to being replaced (like Danley Sound Labs business base, for instance). Additionally, fully active home surround sound systems are basically becoming standard issue with the increased functionality of the AVPs--which I highly recommend because they typically are of higher quality in manufacturer's product lineups, and AVRs--which I am increasingly recommending less because it tends to lock users into a "well, I don't have enough channels to bi-amp or triamp all my channels with my AVR" thinking that you don't get with a good AVP. This subject area, to me, represents a major generational divide in "hi fi" thinking--the future, not the past. JMTC. Chris

  43. Good morning all! The temps have shifted in the far northwest, hitting the low 40's overnight a big shift from 10 days ago where they were consistently in the low 60's overnight. It's been a warm one up here! (for US - I completely realize the relativity of "warm"!) Looking forward to cooler temps and football season!! I am almost completely worn out on the '16 presidential election coverage already, but at least we only have... oh crap 451 days to go.
