  2. I looked them over they looked pretty good and they were hooked to an older denon ss amp. The setup and spacing wasn’t great but the speakers sounded clear and really good as I was hoping they would. I was hoping i wouldn’t hear something off and didn’t. I loved the sound and overall appearance and they seem to be survivors so i bought them! We loaded them up and drove 2.5 hours home and have them in my 1st floor hallway as i type this and plan to move them upstairs tomorrow. Dang these are heavy! Im planning to order a new dynaco st70 and pas preamp. I was looking at some vintage gear but I think I’ll take my time and start with new tubes. The vintage gear was hk citation 1 with dynaco mark iii mono amps… but maybe as i get into this I’ll have various gear as i go.

  10. Hi, These were my father-in-law's Klipsch KG 5.2s. They're quite sentimental to my wife as he passed a few years ago. My 20 yr old Bose 701 series IIs’ finally died, and as a woodworker, refinishing these was a no-brainer. They’ll be replacing the 701s in our living room HT system. They're the oiled walnut veneer, so I took it easy getting them down to fresh wood, removing decades old sun bleaching, scuffs, and water stains. But as I did, I became unsure if they were walnut as they became white. But after applying Rubio Monocoat , the walnut came back to life. Rubio adds a great deal of protection as it was originally designed for hardwood flooring. The pic doesn’t do it justice, as LED lighting is too harsh for capturing true wood tones. I was going to surprise her with them, but it's kinda impossible to hide two huge 54 lb speakers anywhere in our house. She was in tears. Now, as far as restoration goes, are there any particular internal components I should address: wiring, soldering, speaker seals, cabinet sealing, etc.?

So are the garbage cans and you might want to tie down the VW. I see the cats have their claws out, trying to keep a grip on the ground...

  14. When thinking about the acoustics of a room in a typical home, it's important to keep in mind that the room is "small", when compared with a nightclub or concert hall. This means that the sound will be bouncing all over the place, to the ceiling, the floor, and of course the walls. This is why smaller rooms need bigger horns, because the bigger horns can do a better job of directing the sound. No matter how good the horns are, the sound will still be bouncing off the back wall. This is where bookcases can really help the acoustics. It's not all about damping out reflections, it's also important to diffuse the sound. Large flat surfaces are to be avoided. You'll notice that in large concert halls with a reputation for good acoustics, the box seats usually protrude at odd angles, rather than being tucked neatly along the side walls. In the same way, your ideal listening room will have a certain amount of clutter, to minimize the effects of the flat walls. Those flat walls, arranged at right angles to each other, are what cause echoes and "bad" reverb. You can buy "skyline" sound diffusers to put on your walls, which look like a white plastic 3D model of a city, with buildings of every different height possible. Some of these diffusers are big, like 4'/1.22 m. x 6'/1'83 m., and they're not cheap. However, a bookcase or bookshelves that are mostly full of books can accomplish the same thing at a lower cost, assuming you don't have to go out and buy a couple of hundred new books. The books will be different heights, and some shelves will have books of different widths, meaning deep and shallow sections, which helps to diffuse the sound. All those uneven surfaces will help to greatly reduce echo, especially "slapback" echo. As for carpet, keep in mind that the thickness of the carpet dictates the longest wavelengths of sound that the carpet can absorb. If the carpet is 1"/2.5 cm thick, it can absorb sound waves of up to 1"/2.5 cm in wavelength. Sound waves of 2.5 cm/1" have a frequency of 13.5 kHz, so that is the lowest frequency that the carpet can absorb. A carpet that's 1 inch/2.5 cm thick is pretty plush, and yet it can only absorb very high frequencies. For deep bass notes, with wavelengths of 10-20 ft/3-6 m., the carpet will be completely unnoticed by the sound waves. That's why bass traps are so big and odd-looking. The bass sound waves are very long. The carpet can't over-damp a room, it can only reduce some echo.

  18. Ceptorman, directly under the guitar rack there’s an Ampeg 50T head with single 15” cab a Mesa Boogie mark5 35 and an Orange ht30 and there’s also a Vox ac50 behind me primarily I use for keyboard. But use with Ric 12 string also. After final speaker placement I’ll spread amps out a bit as I mic each. Right now they’re crammed under guitar rack to save space. I didn’t notice Dixie was in pic. She’s my appendages

  19. took me two trips to the grocery ... but, got what I need for T'day. Went last Friday. The place was a madhouse. Everything was out of stock. And they were unloading the truck. The store was full of people and ... well ... I got about half of what I went for. Today .... wife had a Dr appt. I figured an hour. Went to the store. Parking place right in front. Grabbed a cart from the caddy. It didn't crab. A very cute lady smiled [maybe laughed] at me as I was going in.... I was wearing my sarong and robe .. The store was well stocked. About 1/3 the people as Friday. I found everything I was looking for and was back at the Dr's office in 45 min. Wife had just finished. a pleasurable shopping trip. that lady that smiled at me made my day.

  25. KT I would have loved to have afforded the c22. I think that’s esthetically my favorite preamp. Mercy I spent so much time looking , reading and almost pulled the trigger on more than one. You and your quad is no different than my wanting another Dual 1229. I loved that turntable. Someone posted some pics of a friend of his stereos in a beautiful house and equipment. I think he said they visited and listened to music. But it made me think back to the 70’s when that’s all we did socially was visit friends and listen to music. I miss those times, I got turned on to some great music I may not have found otherwise.Do any of you guys still visit friends and listen to music? Since my friend Keith died I doubt if I ever will again. Please excuse my droning on. Good evening.

  28. And disconnect the two diodes that are connected in parallel to the tweeter. You don't need them, and they make the sound a little bit harsh. It is sufficient to interrupt them at some point so that they are no longer in parallel in the circuit.

  31. One last bit. Some folks figure that since these are vintage speakers, they should be driven by vintage electronics. There's nothing wrong with that, but the newer gear does sound better, more clear, more accurate bass, and so on, whether you're talking SS or tubes. So I hear, anyway, in the case of tubes. With SS, there's no doubt. The better the signal your speakers are feeding on, the better they sound, whatever age they might be. Happy listening!

  33. Islander, I posted this this pic to show you the placement of speakers as they sit right now. I’ve got guitar cases and a few boxes I still need to move before I can slide speaker into the left corner. I know I need to face couch to face speakers but my DAC and computer for recording is behind where I’m standing taking pic and as I mic those amps the couch is just too much hassle to get around as I switch between amps and instruments. So couch placement is a sacrifice I have to make. I thank you for for your info and guidance.

  34. I think my comment may have been a bit ambiguous. When I said "omit", I meant "overlook", in the sense of "that price estimate might be overlooking the costs of R&D", suggesting that the final costs of the members of the new horn sub family might have to be higher than your estimate. Of course, these are all guesses. Even Roy, who knows the actual numbers involved, probably won't know the final costs, and thus prices, until next year. I guess.

  37. Welcome to the forum. Your LaScala look absolutely honest and original. In my opinion, they were bought very attractively for USD 1,000. Others will know better than I do, but the configuration of your LaScala is absolutely historically correct. The drivers are very original and the Type AA Xover also looks very original even with the authentic Klipsch wire, red and white, which I never would change against something „fancy“ from today.. Klipsch built it like this in the early 80s. Original with K77M. I wouldn't swap the original drivers if I were you, I think there was some confusion here in the forum a few weeks ago about the choice of K55V dual phase plug together with Type AA Xover...a confusion that has never been discussed before...as if the dual phase plug K55V wouldn't harmonise with a Type AA? I think this is BS as PWK himself would say in this case, and he designed it. If I were you, I would first leave everything as it is and listen. I would replace things in this order. First new rubber rings between K55V and K400 horn. Then just listen to see if the treble is too muffled. It could be that the Aerovox capacitors are too old. If they are already wet and leaking oil, I would replace them. There is a dealer JEM who sells the customised and selected polyester caps for your Type AA. Only they are Klipsch approved and it really doesn't make sense to use anything else because Klipsch was really looking to restore the original good sound. JEM is mentioned in the upper fixed zone in the Technical/Restoration zone. There really isn't much more to do for now. The bass should last forever if kept dry and not abused. Never change the coils and especially the autoformers of the Xover, they are worth their weight in gold and have a big impact on the original sound. I only realised this at the end of an odyssey after I had some wrong parts in my 1977 LaScala. You can also reseal the bass cabinet with thin insulating tape on the underside. Maybe you can think about replacing the diaphragms of the K55V with original new ones, but that would be one of the last measures of a fine tuning. In the meantime, have fun with your very great new acquisition.

  38. I offered I’d come up and look for possible 1k, explaining conditions and xo etc… he said he’d take 1k… I’ll drive up tomorrow and check them out. I’m ok with the look and they will be “upstairs” and not in every day view per se. With that price I can sort out the horns and xo and should enjoy them and not be buried in them.

  39. Well after the long friday´s session I was busy to wash some records and while washing I spun some easy listening stuff in the background Earl Klugh with " wishful thinking " Ry Cooder´s " Borderline " and " Get Rhythm " finally Lee Ritenour´s " Festival " As an exception, I turned on the TV earlier in the evening around 8.pm and watched a thriller, normally I don't turn on the TV before 11.pm and only once a day.

  42. I have three (3)Adcom amps and have owned two (2) of them for over 5 years. I have been very pleased using them with KLF-30's and Forte II's. My newest amp is a 5500 (200w per channel) and I've only had it for about a week. So far, so good. I've changed to a Rotel preamp/processor, the new 1068 and am getting used to it. Anyone looking for a Adcom GTP-600 preamp and DDG-1 digital processor? I'm the original owner and they are in great shape. As you can tell, I like Adcom equipment. Since they have been bought out, I'm not sure it's the same company. I've had problems getting a response from their customer service department (I was considering the new Adcom 860 II preamp).

  47. Keep us posted on what you find out. I'm really interested since the 1068 I ordered is due in next week. Does the hum stop when you run the video straight to the tv and leave the audio connected to the 1068?

  48. I don't remember the technical rep's name and the LCD was my terminology. However, he did mention THX certification and that may be because it meets their specs without the endorsement. If you've seen the inside of both units, you should be correct. I can only relate what I was told and couldn't justify the difference in cost.
