  1. This post is for Tony Banks recent birthday But this 12” 45 rpm single album is with his mate Fish of Marillion Wiki info Shortcut to Somewhere" is a song by Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks, released as the second single from his 1986 album Soundtracks, with Fish on vocals. It was Fish's only commercial recording outside Marillion before his departure from the band in late 1988. Fish also wrote the lyrics for this fast, keyboard-based pop song similar to the Genesis material of this period, with a typical 1980s production. The song is part of the soundtrack for the 1986 film Quicksilver. A section of the song was performed live by Genesis as part of a solo career medley at the 1988 Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert. It is the only Tony Banks solo song to have been played live by the band.

  4. Morning folks, well I sure do feel a whole lot better except I'm just waiting to get my walking papers. I do not know if a stent was put in but it was on the list of possibilities and the paperwork prior to going in. What I've seen in the bowl does leave me to believe it's possible that the doc did put one in. Supposed to be freezing out there right now and then 76 Saturday 73 on Easter. So with the comings and goins that I'll post about in the what I got today thread soon will cover this whole week I'm sure! Again, I appreciate the thoughts. Set my way this past month, especially the folks that pm'd me about this. They might have got an earful in turn, sorry. But would not now because I could tell you for the first time since February 17th at 2:00 a.m. I've got no physical pain!!

  20. @Dave1291 it was great brisket too. @Tarheel and I had a good talk and discovered a parking space that only one person successfully navigated into. The rest kept parking ON the line. When we left the place, I had to go inspect the stripe.

  24. It's probably made from an original. Question is, when they put that out in the 70s was it analog from start to finish. Contrary to what I've heard from others here my few from back then do sound better than the regular copies and vice-versa with friends copies!

  28. It appears like they simply need someone to re-veneer the front to fix the obvious gaffs done to them, but everything inside looks to be nearly pristine. This pair is kinda early for a matched stereo setup. A lot of people at this time were still using mono, according to my reading. Nice pieces of history. Now I'm rethinking them for myself... (I can't really!)

  31. As I always say, all music is subjective. I took lessons with Joe Morello for eight years. He is considered one of the greatest jazz drummers if all time, and I learned a ton from him. That being said, his playing is just not my cup of tea. It doesn't take away from the talent and knowledge though. Same thing with speaker choice I suppose. Some folks hate Klipsch...I love them.

  34. Hey folks, been a while. Hoping to get some input re: the Scott 299A phono stage. Recently fell back in love with my 2 channel setup, hasn't seen much use the last few years. Have a Scott 299A, RF-7s, Rega P3, and a Shure V15vxmr cart (MM). Recently added a Raspberry Pi with DAC for streaming. Anyway, noticed a significant difference in volume between the phono & line inputs (phono is quieter). For comparison, 1/2 volume is pretty loud on phono, while the line in I'm probably around 1/4 for the same output. I remember talking to Craig about the phono stage several years back, and it sounded like the amp was good, but I think that was related to some noise I was getting at higher volume. My memory's a bit fuzzy (been a while) so I've been reading up a bit. I think the volume difference might be due to my Shure cart only putting out 3mv, read somewhere the Scott was designed around something higher (I am using mag low input). If my line of thinking is right, my options would probably be to get a new MM cart with more output, get a new phono stage, or just live with it. It does sound great as it is, but I think not having to lean on the volume so much would give a cleaner output. Hoping for some reccomendations from folks with experience here. Is my cart probably the issue? If it is, would I be better off going for a different cart (guessing this is my best option), or maybe a separate phono stage?

  35. I'm of the opinion that as long as a cable is built to a reasonable spec, it's as good as it's going to get. What I mean here, is that if I try to power my 200W x 7 amp with 40g wire, there's going to be a problem. As long as you're meeting the electrical requirements, that's it. They already sell audiophile power outlets. What's next, directional 8g wiring in wall? Audiophile fuse box? Anyone really think they have audiophile grade service from the power company? People are free to spend their money how they choose, and if they enjoy having that "high-end" power cable, good for them. But it's not for me.

  36. If you're trying to avoid software re-installs (due to missing discs/time/etc), yes, your old drive will need to be the boot drive. This thread is reminding me I'm a bit behind on my backups, need to fire up the backup server later tonight. If you get back up and running, if s/w re-installs is an issue, you might want to look into disk imaging software. Would allow you to create a disk image that could be later copied to a new disk for an easy restore. More complicated than regular backups, but might be worth considering.

  37. Jim, The Elevator looks pretty nice, but I don't think I could justify the cost just to normalize volume. Would probably be better off putting that money in a new cart, and maybe some table upgrades. I'll probably re-evaluate carts when the needle on my Shure goes. Replacement needles are out of production sadly, and while the JICO SAS is available I've heard it's a bit bright.

  38. I'd highly recommend nosvalves. Previous owner of my 299 had Craig rebuild it. Sounds great, and he's helped me a few times over the years with questions even though I wasn't the original customer. He was just answering a question I had about gain levels here the other day. If I get another Scott, it's going to him for sure.

  40. Man, I loved the crt. Had it in an 88 Riviera and later in an 89. Ran the radio, climate control, everything. Heck, for long drives you could put in the mileage & it would tell you approx how long till you got there. Had a memo function too. All touch screen. All green may not be stylish nowadays, but you have to admit it was pretty advanced for the late 80s. It's 2006 and most cars still don't have all that. Congrats on the Reatta. Wanted one for a while, they are pretty unique.

  42. James, no problem at all. Hope you find your pre soon. I think you'll really enjoy the setup. I gonna have to make it over to Simply Stereo soon. Need to check out that RT sub you saw. Not really practical in the apartment, but it'll still be fun to check out.

  43. Not sure where the ad above is from, but it's not quite accurate. A T-1 is only 1.5 megs of bandwidth. No seperate upstream/downstream rates on one either. The price is also way low for a real T-1. Sounds more like a way overpriced DSL connection. Want fast? Get a T-3. About 44 megs of bandwidth, and it's still on 2 pairs of copper [] I am really looking forward to more fiber being rolled out though.

  45. It really depends on a lot of things. Tubes or solid state? Are you looking at an amp for 2 channel or home theater. If home theater, are you looking at multichannel amps (ex 5 or 7), monoblocks (single channel), or somewhere in between. Also a large factor is your budget. While wattage can be important depending on your requirements, these are efficient speakers. 15 watts to my RF-7s out of my tube amp can get fairly loud. If this is for HT, and you want to hit reference levels, more power is needed, especially in large rooms with high ceilings. Really though, the most important thing is how it sounds. Let us know a little more about what you're trying to do, and what you expect out of it. With a little more info, you'll get plenty of good suggestions.

  46. Not quite the RF-5, but I have been using an old Scott 299a integrated with my RF-7s for a few years. IMO it sounds very good with the 7s. And while it's only 15 watts/ch, with high efficiency speakers it can still get pretty loud. Soundwise, I think it is fairly comparible with my Lex MC-1 & B&K 200.7 in 2 channel. The Scott sounds a bit warmer & seems to handle the midrange & vocals better, while the B&K wins in the bass. IMO thats a compliment to the Scott as it can be picked up for far less. Also, if you have any interest in vinyl, the Scott has a pretty good phono amp. There are a number of choices out there. I went with the Scott mostly because I didn't want to spend a ton of money on my 1st tube amp to see if whether I would like it. Short answer : Yes, tube integrateds can sound very good with the reference series.
