  1. X2 on the ebay fees, been that way for years now, they get ~10% of the total sale including shipping. kind of unfair IMO as the honest sellers that dont hike up the shipping are penalized because of the ones who do. kind of like taking away the whole classes recess because billy was bad.... & why so quick to assume "shill bidding" ebay has worldwide exposure & there are hundreds of people that can & will bid on these, just because the price gets driven up does not mean there is any fraudulent practices going on. based on the serial #'s these are series 3, made in late 95 or 96 would make them series 3 from the info i recall. could be wrong though. still a decent speaker if the price stays below $700-$800 or so. the 2nd pair looks to have some damage to the veneer or cabinet. while $590 may be a little high for shipping, remember these weigh 108lbs each & when boxed up are over fedex or ups standard size limits, once you get into oversize the price jumps substantially. with the expense & efforts of packing these things i would say $400 is fair. i had my pair shipped via fedex & it was about $150 each in the original boxes actual ship charge, i know i wouldnt want to pack & transport these for free. but free local pickup may make for a good deal for someone close.
  2. the velodyne f-series are a very good sub, even by todays standards. they are servo controlled & put out incredible music & movie bass. my friend had 2 of the last fsr-1500's with little rf-3 klipsch speakers & that was an amazing system. cant get anything comparable for $400 today.
  3. ok, im confused what your point is here.... the OP asked for suggestions on a "smaller" speaker than the cf-4. hence the sugggestion for the forte or quartet as a MUCH smaller speaker overall with quality sound to meet his needs. yes the width is about the same... but the height & depth are much smaller on the fortes. 44" vs 35" is more than the average "hand span." hmmm... sorry but i disagree that they are in the same ballpark. having owned both of these speakers at the same time, the cf-4 is a monsterous behemoth of a speaker & the forte is rather compact in comparison when sitting next to each other. especially when considering the forte's riser is almost 4" of the actual height. did you have a smaller speaker to suggest to the OP??
  4. Forte ll footprint is 16.5"x12.25" CF4 footprint is 17"x19" sorry, never said footprint. was refering to the general overall size of the speaker. should have said "almost" half the size... cf-4- 44x17x19. 108lb. forte- 35x16x12. 67lb. & 32" tall without the risers. so in general the forte is "almost" half the overall size/mass when sitting next to a cf-4.
  5. congrats on the epics, they are a great speaker. unless they have deep scratches or damage to the veneer, just use the lemon oil, or try boiled linseed oil. both work great. if these are an oiled finish they dont have a varnish & the oil will absorb into the wood, a few treatments will make them look nice again. if they are not stock oil finish then there will be a varnish coating & oil treatments arent really designed for that. other cleaners & polishes will make the varnish look better. so depending on their condition & finish, you can apply oils or sand & re-do the varnish. minwax satin polyurethane works great & matches closest to the stock sheen. enjoy the speakers!
  6. these were posted 3 days ago.... & you commented on the good price...
  7. yes i am considering haveing a tech look at/repair it. just looking for opinions on the unit itself, good match to heritage speakers or k-horns specifically? & is usings some electrical contact cleaner worth a try on the volume knob? its mainly scratchy but when moving it will pop a bit too untill it warms up a bit. the "popping" is i think just the extreme scratching im describing. im using a much bigger power amp now (adcom 555-200wpc) & really like the impact & kick i get at higher volumes & the adcom actually sounds pretty decent at lower to mid levels too. will stepping down to 25wpc of the marantz hurt the bass impact & sheer volume levels the adcom can produce on the k-horns?
  8. & what is the name of this dvd?
  9. anybody use one of these integrated amps? especially with heritage speakers? i got one recently that works, but at first power up the volume knob is very scratchy & noisy (through the speakers) it even pops a bit, but then goes away or gets much better after a minute or 2. it sounds good on smaller speakers i used to test it & it gets excellent reviews for vintage gear. i'm afraid to hook it up to my k-horns untill i fix the volume knob issue, just curious if this would be a good match for the speakers.
  10. boom. tap. boom. boom boom. tap.
  11. not sure what your size limits are but the forte 2's would be more than half the size of cf-4's & will sound as good as them but not have the peak output level. if you need smaller the quartets are the same as the forte just a smaller 10" woofer. these arent bookshelf speakers but are very compact floor speakers. & according to some the forte is one of t he best overall sounding kipsch speakers. used value cant be beat at $300-$400 for most on craigslist. another good value for the performance is the classic kg4 or others in the mid-sized kg series.
  12. IMO, cf-4 & 3 have excellent bass, why would you want to cut it off? they are overkill if you plan to rob their bass. might as well get some smaller woofer speakers, or, run them full range & still use the sub. high pass will just kill their performance unless you have some crazy sub that will make up for it.
  13. for $400, used is best. look on CL & ebay for velodyne fsr series. they are older servo subs & sound excelllent with music or movies. the fsr-15 is hard to beat at twice your budget.
  14. seller definantly doesnt know what he has... those obviously are not reference. looks like epic cf-1's to me. cf-1's for $200 might be a decent deal but far from a steal.

    are you selling this???
  16. ok just a guess at the amps power. but the speaker resistance is NOT too high that the other amps cant handle it. fortes are an 8ohm speaker & while the ohms may fluctuate a bit its one of the easiest speakers out there for an amp to drive. all the amps you mention should be able to run the fortes with no problems at all. why they are doing what they are doing is anybodies guess, unless the other amps are malfunctioning or something. could also be teh partially blown/damaged woofer is being controlled better by the crest amps higher damping factor. i will let other more knowledgeable people weigh in on the issue, but its not resistance of the speaker. if the woofer is popping something is damaged or a loose connection on the woofer or x-over etc.
  17. sounds like a "partially" blown woofer. very common when speakers have been driven hard or abused. takes a lot to completely blow a woofer & make it not work at all. when you push on it it changes the alignment of the coil & stops the noise. this cant be fixed unless you have them reconed or buy replacements. as for why the noise stopped with the other amp i have no clue. maybe its less power & didnt drive them as hard as the other amps, either way my guess is partially blown woofers.
  18. forgive my lack of knowledge here... but how would aged x-overs effect the bass of a speaker? arent the caps only for mid/high freq? i've heard this mentioned before & have asked but got no answer... how does changing/updating "aged crossovers" change or improve the bass responce of a speaker?
  19. x3 or 4. no factory stock car will do a wheelie, probably not even a one tire lift. as stated all american muscle cars just dont have the power, tires, or suspension to do a real wheelie. & the foreign exotic supercars are totally not made for drag racing, they are so low to the ground & made to handle in corners that they will not pull the front tires. heck i have a friend with a 600hp tubbed drag car that can barely pull the one front tire at the track. but most of that is by design, the suspension is set up to launch the car straight & fast, pulling a wheelie is transfering power to lift the nose & loosing some of the forward motion that a drag car wants for fastest elapsed times. so i would say absolutely no way any street legal factory car will do a wheelie. & a large majority of the hot rods you see on teh street cant do one either... depsite what you see in too fast too furious movies!
  20. that would be one of those... "they cost 9 grand new so 4500 is a great deal" ads. what does the price of new, redesigned speakers have to do with 20+ year old speakers????? i just dont get it.
  21. the best ads are the ones where they compare their 20+ year old speakers to what the new current ones cost. or their rusted out classic car to what a similar car sold for on ebay or barret jackson auction. "i have a pair of 1986 corner horns for $4,500, thats half the price of what they cost new" or "these cost $9000 new etc etc" thats like listing your 1986 ford truck & saying "a new ford trucks cost $30,000 new so this is a great deal at $15,000" sometimes its not the personality as much as it is the IQ!
  22. What model? im curious what model too. i have a 1999-2000 model onkyo 777 avr, it was my first receiver with dolby digital 5.1. its 105wpc & uses the same WRAT amp design most current onkyo avr's have. it has always driven my speakers great, tons of bass. most recently it was on the kg5.5's & they always had excellent bass. it is now designated to the mainly home theater system with different speakers & about to be replaced by the 805. sorry i forgot if you said you checked the settings on the receiver, but if you havent, this is the very model or series of models that will default to sub "YES" & cut the bass from your main speakers. can you go into the settings menu & confirm the sub is set to "NO" & the main speakers are set to "LARGE" ?
  23. "fact is there are 10's or hundreds of thousands of these receivers in use with no problems at all." you sure about this? ; ) just a guess at the actual number produced, but its safe to say there are far more without issue than the "few" that have the issue. yes its a known problem for quite a few years now, but again, its only the ones that go bad that you hear about, there are thousands of others that are working perfectly fine. same with my 605 & 805, they were the first hdmi capable onkyos & some had problems, but mine are fine 6+ years later. (fingers crossed!) & i bought them both used. sorry to hear yours is one with the issues, but im sure there are plenty of 960's that work great. just sayin.
  24. no offense but that is not a valid claim. i understand you had a bad experience with "your" particular unit, but bought used it had a totally unknown past. fact is there are 10's or hundreds of thousands of these receivers in use with no problems at all. same goes for most the bad reputations audio gear & other stuff can get. just because a very small percentage have problems does not justify saying they are ALL bad or to "stay away from brand or model x". in reality its a fraction of a percent that have the issues. another example of this. i used to work in the escalations department of the 2nd largest phone company in the world. every day myself & 15-20 other people in the department took 50+ calls &/or letters from customers with complaints & problems. after awhile it started to wear on me & i thought to myself, wow this company sucks & has all kinds of problems. however looking at monthly & yearly reports of the complaints & escalations we got, it was actually like less than .01% of our customers. put it all into perspective, we had over 3 million customers & less than .01% of them were unghappy with a small issue. when i would hear a customer say, "you are the worst company out there" or "i will tell all my friends & family to stay away form your company" i just chuckled knowing that it was their individual opinion based on one little issue they had. millions of other customers loved us! moral of the story... dont let a "few" issues sway your judgement of the brand, product or company. in reality most have far better statistics than you realize & your opinion is biased based on the few examples of problems you might read or hear about.
