  1. Some here may disagree but in my opinion good riddance to a fundamentally evil SOB. I grew up in the days of the "Cuban Missile Crisis" and watched my father pack his things as an Air Force Reserve member preparing to go to war with Cuba and the USSR. Yes... There is much to be said for Castro's socialist regime in terms of making the lives of the Cuban people a bit better but none of that cancels out the brutality meted out upon his opponents. No matter how you slice it a dictatorship is a dictatorship. It doesn't matter if Fidel Castro or Raul Castro is in charge it's still a dictatorship. Until the people of Cuba can freely elect who they want to be in control of their country they will always be under the control of Socialists, or Communists, or Marxists. Rant off...
  2. Better yet avoid the scale altogether. I'm stunned at how much my washer & dryer has shrunk my T-Shirts in the last few days.
  3. Very cool. Enjoyed that one a lot. Glad I'm not part of the cleanup crew

    Jokes?

Stolen from another forum that I frequent... There is a medical distinction between Guts and Balls. We've heard colleagues referring to people with Guts, or with Balls.Do they, however, know the difference between them? Here's the official distinction; straight from the British Medical Journal: Volume 323; page 295.GUTS - Is arriving home late, after a night out with the lads, being met by your wife with a broom, and having the Guts to ask: Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?BALLS - Is coming home late after a night out with the lads, smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the butt and having the Balls to say: "You're next, Chubby"I trust this clears up any confusion.Medically speaking, there is no difference in the outcome; both are fatal.
  6. Matthew has by and large passed for me. Still getting gusty winds and an occasional rain band but the worst is definitely behind me. The only damage I'm seeing locally is a few downed tree branches. The worst damage at my house was that my trash can got knocked over.I've been watching the local news feeds and it looks like the northern east coast of Florida is still getting hammered.
  7. I'm on a bit of tight budget. My desktop PC audio system is a pair of these: http://www.stereophile.com/content/pioneer-sp-bs41-lr-loudspeaker Driven by one of these: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dta-120-class-t-mini-amplifier-60-wpc--300-3800 I got the speakers on clearance for $99 and the amp pre-owned for $50. Considering the under $150 investment it sounds very VERY good to my ears. I'm currently on the hunt for a decent (but affordable) DAC so I can take the PC's audio out of the mix. I fully expect an outboard DAC to kick up the quality a notch or three.
  8. I recently revamped my bedroom PC audio system. I need to find a new home for this guy. It includes a spare set of tubes. Detailed info here: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=QIA6500&gclid=Cj0KEQjwsai_BRC30KH347fjksoBEiQAoiaqsSrCA94f2HB1r4souzYtUaQmGawvj_r288kEGjXJ9VYaAuwU8P8HAQ Asking price is $80 delivered to a CONUS address and paid by PayPal. Note 1: When hooked to high efficiency speakers there is a low level buzz/hum. I used it with not so efficient speakers so I never heard it. Note 2: This is NOT a tube amplifier. The preamp stage is tube buffered. The final amplifier stage is solid state. Thanks for looking!
  9. Very sorry for your loss Thoughts going out to you and your family. I know all too well what you're feeling right now. Lost my Mom 3 years ago today and my Dad last month.
  10. I'm out. 4 inches too deep for where I want to use them.
  11. At the last house I lived in there was a bombing range a little over 10 miles away. If it was military, flew, dropped bombs, or fired rockets it probably flew over my house at one point or another. Lived there for over 30 years so I saw a lot of planes and helicopters fly over. It got where I could identify many of the aircraft by the sound they made. Except for the B52s. They flew WAY up there. The A10s had the most distinctive sound. When they were dropping heavy ordinance I could hear/feel the booms. I will say they were courteous about the noise. They stopped promptly at 10:00 PM. One day I was working in the yard and heard an approaching helicopter. As the sound got louder and louder I realized that it was more than one helicopter. More like dozens. Wave after wave of Cobras and Apaches. Generally in groups of 4 a couple of minutes apart. Lasted for almost an hour. I would have loved to see what was happening on the ground at the bombing range that day.

    What I Got Today!

One of these: A couple of months ago the cartridge sled on my 40 year old Dual 1245 spontaneously disemboweled itself leaving me unable to spin vinyl. At the time replacing it was pretty much at the bottom of my priority list for financial reasons. Things are a bit better now money wise so I sprung for a new sled. Since the table came with a glued to the sled Shure V15 reusing it wasn't an option. I picked up the Audio Technica AT120E/b. Many of the online reviews stated that the cartridge needed 100 hours of break in before it sounded it's best. I don't know... I'm liking what I hear right out of the box. So far I have about 4 hours on it and it's sounding good to me. Maybe the best is yet to come.

    KLFC7 near me

Don't know if this is a good deal or not but it's located about 4 miles from me and be happy to facilitate shipping if someone needs it. http://lakeland.craigslist.org/for/5754793737.html
  14. Between records, turntables, cleaning methods, preamps, and the like it seems to me that a separate section dedicated to vinyl might be justified. The moderators here saw fit to create separate sections for tube amplification and SS amplification why not a section for vinyl discussions? For what it's worth I do own a turntable and a few records that I listen to on occasion. I would welcome a dedicated vinyl area.
  15. HBRs on slant risers supplied by Mr. Crites. The paint on the risers is whatever I could buy at the local Wally-World as cheaply as possible. You know me. I'll spend assloads of $$ for acoustics and next to nothing for cosmetics.

    Vinyl storage

    Comments on storage here: http://uturnaudio.com/playing-your-vinyl
  17. HMMM... I think I have several pairs of those AR interconnects in my big tub-o-cables (no kidding 50+ pounds in a storage tub) but I don't recall any of them looking like that. These days my very minor interconnect needs are being handled by DIY cables. I've discovered that in general I can build at least as good interconnects than I can buy commercially for a lot less $$.
  18. Thanks for the clarification of the pronunciation and gender. Would I be stoned to death by this crowd if I admitted that I've not read any of the Harry Potter books nor have seen any of the movies?
  19. A kudos shout out and BIG thank you to forum member BamaMike. He supplied me with a pair of VERY nice black cloth Heresy grills. A more than fair price, prompt shipping and packaging that would survive the very worst the gorilla baggage handlers in the old Samsonite commercial could dish out. Pop quiz... Who else is old enough to remember that commercial? I acquired a set of badges off the Bay a few months ago with visions of buying grill cloth from Mr. Crites (sorry Bob) and building the grills in what little time I have available. BamaMike saved me from the effort and also saved me a few $$ in the process. For those interested you're looking at a pair of 84 Heresys driven by an Onkyo Integra A-9711 integrated amplifier which is in turn being fed by a Dual 1245 turntable with a Shure V15 III cartridge, an Onkyo Integra T-4711 tuner, an Onkyo Integra DPS-6.5 optical disc player. The bottom octaves that the Heresys can't handle are filled out by a Dayton (Parts-Express) 12" subwoofer. Considering I have WAY less than $1K invested in this system including the stand it sounds WAY better than it should for the $$. I've had several friends who heard the system ask me to help them replicate it for them. So far the stars have simply not aligned for me to help them get anywhere close to what I'm blessed with being able to listen to at anywhere near the few $$ that I've invested.
  20. Whenever I find myself in the St Petersburg end of the world I visit Bananas Records. They claim to have over 3 million records in stock. A walk-through of their vinyl warehouse and you'll think that number may be on the low side. http://www.musicfinder.com/#Vinyl Warehouse
  21. Sad news indeed. RIP Mr. Wilder. The movies he did with Richard Pryor were comic genius. I can only imagine how hard it was to keep a straight face in front of the camera with those two on set. Kind of like the Harvey Korman / Tim Conway skits on the Carol Burnett show. WOW... I suddenly realized how old I must sound.
  22. Helluva storm aimed at your end of the world. Hermine is not yet a hurricane but they're saying it might become one by the time it makes landfall. https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/2016/Tropical-Depression-Nine Didn't there used to be a thread about hurricanes? Just how does one pronounce "Hermine"? And what is the "gender" of the name Hermine?
  23. Something nefarious is afoot... For reasons I don't completely understand I've been craving a "proper" martini for a while now.Currently in my freezer.Ya'all have to know what's next...Results in a few more minutes.I once read a quote about martinis that went something like "One martini, two at most. Three I'm under the table and four I'm under my host." I can most certainly relate.
