  1. I saw where you bought that amp. I have one and it performs very well for me. Don't push it into low ohm loads, it doesn't like that. I don't know how the University design that morey james suggested would work out with being scaled down, I've heard they are great as designed. That would be a question beyond my scope. I am sure someone will be along to help. Good luck, it sounds like a fun project. I'm currently building a couple taped horn subs myself and having a blast (so far).
  2. If you plan to use either/or in factory condition, modest up grades allowed, you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference between the two. They are basically the same design concept with the same driver, one just made to look pretty. Both have excellent quick hard hitting bass. They don't go as low as some want but the lowest octave can be achieved with a sub. Which type of sub to use will be another debate. For the vast majority of music, you will have all the bass you need. HT may require that sub.
  3. I thought they came from the factory with those "decorative" rings!??!! I guess it may be the price range I look for, but rarely see any without them.
  4. Okay, since you've hijacked my thread , I'll jump in here and say I'm a longtime SRV and Jimmy fan. I just got home from my travel and put in the Texas Flood SACD. Back in college, I had a band called the Blues Express and we played a lot of SRV, Arc Angels and Storyville. I was also at the Alpine Valley show that fateful weekend. And the reason I couldn't pickup the Belles from Tasdom, the weekend I agreed to buy them is because I still play the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival every year and it was two weekends ago. I typically always play at least one SRV song, sometimes on mandolin, but this year, I played the Fabulous Thunderbirds cover of Wrap it Up. I'm also a big fan of Doyle Bramhall senior, who wrote a bunch of SRVs best tunes. Here's a clip of me playing some SRV at the festival… I've long stopped trying to play with his tone and prefer a little cleaner sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm9D2e_Oz78 I still can't seem to get this video to embed. Just watched (listened to) your performance. Very nice. Wish I had just a little bit of musical talent like that!
  5. Wipster, good choices on the first listen material. you will probably change that list several times before they arrive. I went with one of my favorites Stevie Ray Vaughn (greatest hits playlist)when I got my Belles home. Cranked it and loved it. After my initial phase of how loud can I listen, I settled down and played some softer songs and appreciated the speakers even more. Really brought to life certain aspects of the recordings that I was missing. As much as I enjoyed Crossfire by SRV, I have probably cued up "Lenny" by him more often. Enjoy, it's fun, and expensive, but most hobbies are?
  6. Don't you hate it when the wife forces you to upgrade your system!?!? I have only heard the 7's a couple of times and the Chorus I have not heard in years, but I am sure the 7's will help lessen your withdrawls from the Chorus. Great looking system that I would guess sounds as good as it looks.
  7. You cant go wrong with the ALK Universals. I have never tried them but have not heard a bad thing about them plus used by many people that know their sh*t. But since you already have the CT125s, the 4500 xover wont break the bank. Lowering the xover point is also putting less strain on your mid (in theory) I know mine sound great (in my mind)! You actually have more stuff than I do, AND much nicer stuff. Good luck with whatever direction you go. I will have to search out your first song choices as I am not familiar with them.
  8. I knew a cannibal once, he would disagree with you!
  9. MKP, congrats on one year! You're about 6 months ahead of me. The posts of yours that I have seen are always kind and informative. (I haven't read them all, that would be creepy) You stayed away from the mud slinging posts which are always tempting to join in. You obviously have made some friends here. I cringed a couple times when you posted "personal" stuff, but all I saw were genuinely concerned replies. A sure sign you have made friends. You also tend to have common sense opinions on a variety of subjects, The objective of most group meetings of addicts is to reform you. This place only adds fuel to the fire. Hope you keep posting for years to come.
  10. Ok, I always like to ask: musicook, what was the first song you listened to when you got your Belle's hooked up? Whipster, what do you plan to play first?
  11. AB's had to go, you are right. 4500 plus the tweets was only $15 more when I did it. I let Bob make the call, he said he liked the 4500 better but only by a little bit (plus it is his design). Either way, I am sure they sound similar and much better than the dreaded AB. Those will look nice in your room. I am sure they will work out well for you. I have bought from Phil before and he is straight up (pricey, but stands behind what he sells). Waiting for them will be the hardest part.
  12. Judging by your Seahawk cap, your Belle's have a long ride from Maumelle AR! Curious to hear your comments on the AB2 from Bob. I chose the 4500 hz crossover with the CT 125 tweeter to update my Belles and loved it. The cost for the two xovers plus tweeter was about the same as the new AB2 so I went that direction since I got new tweeters with that mix. I trust you will like your Belles as much as I do mine.
  13. There is a pair on ebay (currently @ $1200 for a pair) that uses the same wording: "enough bass to stun small animals". Not sure where this expression started but is getting a lot of mileage lately. I will have to take mine outside as the neighbors little dog is on my last nerve.
  14. pretty sure it says Des Moines Iowa in the thread title!
  15. If "I am picking up what you are putting down", then the answer is Yes!
  16. Mine were original Heresies, I only assumed his were too. Buy first and ask questions later is how I ended up with my pair.
  17. If the price is right, it could be worth it. I am just now completing a Heresy cabinet rebuild and I used the front and back boards. they came out fairly easy with minimal damage. I see no reason why you couldn't remove rotate and reinstall. Fairly easy. Good luck.
  18. That's when I realized, we don't watch the same movies!
  19. Sancho, what are you up to? You have revived two threads for horn loaded subwoofers. I just ordered a couple woofers to build a couple of the Anarchy Tapped Horn subs earlier today. Must be something in the air. Just finishing up a rebuild on a pair of old Heresey's to clear the deck for the sub builds.
  20. Best performance I saw live was Marshall Tucker w/ Charlie Daniels at the Mississippi River Festival @ SIUE (Edwardsville IL) doing 24 Hours at a Time. Not sure how great it actually was, but it floored me at the time. (1979 ish) Thanks for the Heart video doing Stairway to Heaven, never saw if before and it was excellent. As for video live performances, this one stood out to me last year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toSWIFioFmw Bruno Mars doing a tribute to Amy Winehouse.
  21. make something "idiot proof" and they build a better idiot!
  22. Allman Brothers Dave Mathews Band Allman Brothers Marshall Tucker Band Atlanta Rhythm Section Marshall Tucker Boston Pavlov's Dog Santana Stevie Ray Vaughn Bonnie Raitt Mamma's Pride Boston Crap, this is hard! Better hit "Post" before I drive myself crazy!
  23. PE has a Dayton chip amp for under $30. it can run off a few double A's. It is plenty of power to see if something is seriously wrong. I have brought it with me a couple of times and tested speakers. I use it in my office with a pair of KSB 1.1's when not taking it on the road (come with an cord also)
  24. Sold a pair and got to keep a pair plus musicook got a new pair! Win / win / win! That was a great deal. They are almost identical to mine. I didn't get quite as good a deal, but don't regret taking the plunge at all. Drove 6 hours each way to get them too. Let the debates begin as to how to upgrade. I switched my AB crossover to the 4500hz model from Bob Crites along with the tweeter and there was a major improvement. Get to know them first so you appreciate the upgrade. Great score, glad it worked out for everyone.
