  1. Yeah In my younger days I used to subscribe to that magazine, but got tired of every review claiming improved “pacing”, “tempo”, “enhanced soundstage”, “better transparency”, and on and on... Sure, there ARE improvements you can make, but it seemed that every single one was night and day. You’d think that if you applied all of them it’d blow your mind. I gave up one day when a digital interconnect resulted in better tempo. My bet is that the bitstream was the same before and after, but for the hundreds of dollars this thing cost, it just had to be better. I did not renew.
  2. My father was in WWII and the Korean Conflict in the Navy. I never had the honor to serve, went right into school and then on to engineering. I support a couple of DoD programs now involving aircraft from two branches, though not as much these days as I once did. I have to say that everyone on the big contractor engineering side and those presently serving that I’ve worked with have been a great group of guys and gals, with some friendships remaining long afterwards. Sure, there were snipes in good fun from time to time, but at the end of the day, everyone came together to get the mission done.
  3. You could plug a 100W standard old tungsten bulb into it and then measure it. My guess is that it’ll settle down to 120.
  4. So exactly which measurable parameters do the special wire lengths affect in the audio spectrum? How much variance can the length be before it changes things in some measurable way? ...and I don’t mean ears.
  5. I think this is an excellent response and I agree wholeheartedly.
  6. You seem hung up on “mil-spec” as if it is somehow better. I work with some mil-spec items and can tell you that isn’t necessarily true. “Mil-spec” just means that the GAO has defined requirements for things. That’s so stuff confirming to the spec is of same quantity and will have same reliability and interoperability and sometimes cost, regardless of manufacturer. It absolutely is not a guarantee a particular product is the absolute best that it can be in terms of materials used, manufacturing process, and so forth. Mil-spec wire could give you consistent wire, but it could be junk for a given purpose. Sure sounds impressive, though. Much more impressive than SAE AS22759/11. Who wants AUTOMOTIVE wire when you could have MILITARY wire?
  7. Or get you a set of splits, do what John says, and flip the top around to face you. Bonus: the top can hold the plywood corner piece down.
  8. Man, so very sorry. I have lost a brother and know how it sucks. Yell if you need to talk. I'm serious.
  9. Maybe I'm being fooled from the perspective. I thought it didn't look wide enough, but on second look, the distance from the sides of the horn to the corners looks right for a standard horn.
  10. Why is that side tweeter there? Storage? I've never seen that before. Also, what mid horn is that?
  11. 😀Noted. That took about 15-20 seconds, with me staring into a bright light on the ground while someone else was behind me with a portable light, moving it around. My only instructions from the photographer was, "don't move & don't blink". It'd be tough to have that rig around all of the time, lol.
  12. Hey thanks @Blackbird, but believe it or not, I just cut it off again. It grows really fast but I'm trying to decide if I grow it out again or keep it short.
  13. Me too, but you'd have to buy the parts.
  14. I’m not any kind of expert, but I think that just about any undamped chamber can resonate at a frequency that is some function of its volume. There may be several sweet spots, both due to primary, harmonics, and even others because of topology or hole impedance.
  15. I think you're right. Probably not much stereo running around then. I have an article from 1964 advising audiophiles with limited budgets to go for quality monaural (Klipschorn) instead of poor-quality stereo, then later adding a second Klipschorn.
  16. @Hornographic These would look GREAT at your place! I might even take off work to help you retrieve them.
  17. Other photos show that they are indeed AK-2.
  18. Those are pretty nasty SpeakerLab-K units.
  19. Can you post photos? Overall and especially any blemishes? Also photos of crossovers and serial number tags.
