  1. I am happy with the LS as they are - just have a chance to get KHorns at a great price.
  2. OK, I love my La Scalas, but have a chance to acquire a set of Khorns (1977 or 1987, my choice). My living room is 13' wide, 23' long with a cathedral ceiling that slopes for one side up giving a ceiling height of 12' on one side and 20' on the other. Floor is carpeted, couch and loveseat are in there (fabric, not leather). I have natural corners on the short wall, so they would be about 11' apart or so. Thoughts?
  3. Just my two cents - on my La Scales, I ended up dropping the mid to -6 dB total to tone them down a bit. I'll eventually add a switch to allow the factory setting or my mod to be chosen. Perhaps keeping the AL and move the AAs down a bit to even things out would be an option.
  4. Umm, is it just me, or does, as time goes by, the RRHoF becomes less and less relevant. Does anyone care anymore?
  5. A garage sale / thrift store AVR would work. Most have pre-outs and remotes (I used my Denon as a pre/DAC for a few months, worked perfectly).
  6. I have owned 3 pairs of speakers with built-in amps - two B&O, and Advents (NLA). The B&Os have been trouble free, the Advents, I ended up dumping due to issues. It is a fine line. All things considered, unless the amps are "off the shelf" parts, I'd avoid adding them in.
  7. Oh crap, I need a pair of these to make my La Scala's official. Must.....resist.....
  8. Wow, that is a great deal! Post them on Cl - I'll bet they get scooped up. EDIT: Oops, cross-posted with Otis.
  9. Where is that white van I saw? I wanna buy some *loud* speakers.
  10. Wow, good question. I'll bet they are very close to each other.
  11. Nice! I am anxious to see picts of them once they are in their new home. Congrats!
  12. I saw those too. I think the price is high, but if you can knock $500 off them, they would be fair. $2500 I the usual price for Khorns around here.
  13. Yeah, that is a home-brew. I can not see any manufacturer mounting the tweeter in such a Mickey Mouse fashion.
  14. I recently gutted my 7.1 HT, which I liked, and replaced it all with a 2.0 La Scala setup, which I like even more! If you get the speakers setup correctly, you do not need a dedicated center channel. I have been very impressed with these speakers in the HT environment. Makes my living room look cleaner too (and my wife loves them). A setup like Youthman shows above would be better than most commercial theaters, no question.
  15. Interesting comments. The sensitivity of a speaker is overlooked in todays market of cheap wattage, but it is very important, especially (as pointed out above) in low volume (dB) situations. One of the reason I love my La Scalas and Bozaks - only a watt or three are needed and they are "clean" at low volumes.
  16. You need one of the passive "straight wire" preamps. Basically they are a a source switch and a volume control. They do not even need any power. Just played with one the other day, but can not think of the brand off the top of my head. I know PS Audio has some.
  17. Yeah, what he said. I have noticed it too. Some stuff is just terrible on my La Scalas. That is when I switch to my Bozaks or Large Advents - more forgiving.
  18. Interesting interview. He's not a fan of Harmon I see... As to the OPs question, I'm not sure. He seems to allude to some rare fancy analog devices that work better than his digital setup, but are not obtainable.
  19. Not in my experience. Macs usually meets specs from 250mA (.25 A) to full power. You'll be fine.
