From what I have read I believe that the results show the people's opinions that take the survey on OKCupid on what they would like, not necessarily the age they actually go out and date. When you actually peel back the onion and look at what people do, you will see the realism of the situation and those 40-year-old guys only have enough courage to send a message and ask out women a lot older.
