teaman
Hi guys, I have first gen Heresys with the standard speaker wire screws in the rear of the cabinets. I am running the Monoprice 12 guage wire and the connection is not the greatest. What is all involved with swapping the posts out and running five way binding posts in their place. I believe they have the Type E crossovers in my Heresy's but I will have to double check on that. Seems their is a little short in the connection back there as sometimes the sound goes in and out and is okay once I wiggle the speaker wires....which is obviously not something I want to keep doing. Let alone at higher volume it would probably risk damaging the speakers. Any advice is helpful and appreciated! I was thinking something along the lines of these from partsexpress.com http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-bpa-38g-hd-binding-post-pair-gold--091-1245 Thanks, Tim
jimjimbo
Do it. Run some new wire from the new posts to the crossovers.
angusruler
yep......that's what I used for my heresys.
The Dude
When I tried them, they seemed to big and I felt I would have had to fill and drill new holes. Is this not the case for some, plus I just solder a spade connector to my wire and it seems to work fine.
djk
"back there as sometimes the sound goes in and out and is okay once I wiggle the speaker wires: Remove the back and tighten the screws that go through the back into the terminal block.
ricktate
Those binding posts will work that's what I put on my LaScalas but you might have to fill holes and re drill them further apart. It not that hard to do and when you have the back off check all the connections as in loosen and retighten them.. Another thing you can do is re-enforce the back panel with layer of wood on inside also apply some type of seal around the edge. Maybe even change out the caps. its a never ending loop lol . teaman
Thanks guys. I may have to wait until the weekend but I will take the baks off to see what everything looks like. Even if it is just loose screws on the back I may change it out anyways. I appreciate all the help and I will let you know once I look everything over. muel
Make sure the inside of the binding posts won't interfere with the driver. A previous owner of my HI's didn't think of that and now the backs have to be put on upside down or the binding posts would hit the mid driver.
cradeldorf
I'm betting your hear a difference between the two. the binding posts will sound worse. They're usually crap metal with a thin brass or gold coating.
wvu80
I have those exact binding posts on some DIY speakers. They are heavy duty and can accept up to 8 ga wire. I think you drill a 1/4" hole and then they pound in tightly, the shaft is knurled to prevent spinning.
colterphoto1
YES that's exactly what I've used. Reuse one of the two existing holes, drill out to just the size of the shaft, use a double banana plug to locate the other (in case someone might want to use that style wire termination), mark and drill the second hole. LINE UP THE SHAFT HOLES on the binding posts (I put the double banana plug in from the TOPS of the shafts (not the end) and then remove. Put an inverted socked over the shaft to cushion the blow and tap into place. Fill other previous hole in back of cabinet with dab of putty or caulk (PL200 is a good color)
Arash
I always use binding post from a Chinese manufacturer which it's products are quit different from other Chinese goods. it is EIZZ. I use this model of binding post and I found it very robust, durable, beautiful and sonically comparable with WBT binding posts. they are 5.5USD/each while similar looking items could be obtained about 2USD/each. they made some other models with higher price but I think this is adequate. I found Maffaudio good to buy things from China. I have no affiliation with EIZZ nor with Maffaudio, just my two cents
colterphoto1
^ how you gonna mount that in a 3/4" panel?
Arash
^ how you gonna mount that in a 3/4" panel? by mounting it on a metal plate then attaching it on the panel so the connector don't have to go all the way through the panel. https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sbpp-si-binding-post-plate-silver-anodized--091-
colterphoto1
The method outlined above requires that only two small holes be drilled, an is nearly invisible should a future owner wish to reverse the modification. The panel shown above would work but requires use of a jigsaw. Your solution is a much nicer installation than a panel inset in the interior of the cabinet, which would make installing large gauge wires difficult.
