What's Your Favorite Song-Lyrics Please

Everybody's got a favorite song/songs. Could be an oldie, could just be the one your listening to right now.

I'm looking for something with lyrics. After all it's hard to hum a few bars online and expect us to know the tune.

So favorite song, author and I got no problem at all if you one to drop the lyrics from the whole song or just the chorus into the mix.

I'll start it out with something totally silly but has brought me a laugh or two over the years:

If You Want to Be Happy (early '60's-can't remember group-later done by King Creole. Lyrics follow:

f you want to be happy for the rest of your life

Never make a pretty woman your wife

so for my personal point of view

Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat)

A pretty woman makes her husband look small

And very often causes his downfall

As soon as he marries her then she starts

Doing the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife

Then you will be happy for the rest of your life

An ugly woman cooks meals on time

She'll always give you peace of mind

CHORUS

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life

Never make a pretty woman your wife

So for my personal point of view

Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat)

So if your friends say you have no taste

Go ahead and marry anyway

Though her face is ugly her Ieyes don't match

Take it from me she's a better catch

CHORUS

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life

Never make a pretty woman your wife

So for my personal point of view

Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat)

Say kid YES

I saw your wife the other day UH HUH

And she's ugly

HA HA BUT SHE SURE CAN COOK

CHORUS

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life

Never make a pretty woman your wife

So for my personal point of view

Get an ugly girl to marry you (repea)

Southern trees bear strange fruit,

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,

Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,

Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,

Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck,

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,

For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,

Here is a strange and bitter crop.

So, so you think you can tell

Heaven from Hell,

Blue skys from pain.

Can you tell a green field

From a cold steel rail?

A smile from a veil?

Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade

Your heros for ghosts?

Hot ashes for trees?

Hot air for a cool breeze?

Cold comfort for change?

And did you exchange

A walk on part in the war

For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.

We're just two lost souls

Swimming in a fish bowl,

Year after year,

Running over the same old ground.

What have we found?

The same old fears.

Wish you were here.

Van Morrison - "Moondance"

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance

With the stars up above in your eyes

A fantabulous night to make romance

'Neath the cover of October skies

And all the leaves on the trees are falling

To the sound of the breezes that blow

And I'm trying to please to the calling

Of your heart-strings that play soft and low

And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush

And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Chorus:

Can I just have one a' more Moondance with you, my love

Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight

I can't wait 'til the morning has come

And I know that the time is just right

And straight into my arms you will run

And when you come my heart will be waiting

To make sure that you're never alone

There and then all my dreams will come true, dear

There and then I will make you my own

And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside

And I know how much you want me that you can't hide

Chorus

Repeat 1st Verse

One more Moondance with you in the moonlight

On a magic night

La, la, la, la in the moonlight

On a magic night

Can't I just have one more dance with you my love

Bob Dylan - "4th Time Around"

When she said,

"Don't waste your words, they're just lies,"

I cried she was deaf.

And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes,

Then said, "What else you got left?"

It was then that I got up to leave

But she said, "Don't forget,

Everybody must give something back

For something they get."

I stood there and hummed,

I tapped on her drum and asked her how come.

And she buttoned her boot,

And straightened her suit,

Then she said, "Don't get cute."

So I forced my hands in my pockets

And felt with my thumbs,

And gallantly handed her

My very last piece of gum.

She threw me outside,

I stood in the dirt where ev'ryone walked.

And after finding I'd

Forgotten my shirt,

I went back and knocked.

I waited in the hallway, she went to get it,

And I tried to make sense

Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair

That leaned up against . . .

Her Jamaican rum

And when she did come, I asked her for some.

She said, "No, dear."

I said, "Your words aren't clear,

You'd better spit out your gum."

She screamed till her face got so red

Then she fell on the floor,

And I covered her up and then

Thought I'd go look through her drawer.

And, when I was through

I filled up my shoe

And brought it to you.

And you, you took me in,

You loved me then

You didn't waste time.

And I, I never took much,

I never asked for your crutch.

Now don't ask for mine.

"Oh, Demon alchohol,

sad memories I can recall,

who'd thought that I would fall,

slave to Demon alchohol.

Dam it all,

blow it all,

alchohol."

The Kinks "Chronicles"

And in no particular order:

"Well, good-bye world,

it's sad but true,

I've got a date with the hang man,

I have to leave you.

I don't say I'm sorry,

I just say I'm sore.

The reason I'm going,

is blood on the floor.

Well I came home one night,

she was lying,

her legs around that man's bod.

She saw me and started laughing,

but, she cried when she saw my gun!

Good-bye world,

Their taking my life 'cause I shot my sweetheart.

I don't say I'm sorry,

I just say I'm sore.

The reason I'm going

is blood on the floor."

Fleetwood Mac "Kilnhouse"

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people going by

I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"

They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow

They'll learn much more than I'll ever know

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Here is another one I used to sing to my daughter a long time ago:

"There is an island way out in the sea, sea.

Where the babies they all grow on trees, trees,

It's jolly good fun, to lie in the sun,

but you've gotta watch out if you sneeze, sneeze.

You've gotta watch out if you sneeze.

And when the stormy wind blows,

there is a curious dropping and popping and plopping

as cute little babies just hail, hail,

cute little babies just hail.

Then after a while the natives come by

and take all the babies who smile, smile

take all the babies who smile.

And leave all the babies who cry, cry.

You've gotta watch out if you cry"

Jefferson Starship (sorry I think I missed a couple of

the lyrics, yesterday was thirty plus years ago!1.gif )

Good one Frank!

One of my faves: Eric Burdon and the Animals:

In this dirty old part of the city

Where the sun refused to shine

People tell me there ain't no use in tryin'

Now my girl you're so young and pretty

And one thing I know is true

You'll be dead before your time is due, I know

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'

Watched his hair been turnin' grey

He's been workin' and slavin' his life away

Oh yes I know it

(Yeah!) He's been workin' so hard

(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby

(Yeah!) Every night and day

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you

Now my girl you're so young and pretty

And one thing I know is true, yeah

You'll be dead before your time is due, I know it

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'

Watched his hair been turnin' grey, yeah

He's been workin' and slavin' his life away

I know he's been workin' so hard

(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby

(Yeah!) Every day baby

(Yeah!) Whoa!

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

Girl, there's a better life for me and you

Somewhere baby, somehow I know it

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

Girl, there's a better life for me and you

Believe me baby

I know it baby

You know it too

I'm pretty fond of:

Why don't we do it in the road?

Why don't we do it in the road?

Why don't we do it in the road?

Why don't we do it in the road?

No one will be watching us,

Why don't we do it in the road?

From "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" The Beatles (album of the same name)

OK, more seriously; there are too many songs I really like, but one that is in the top, oh, fifty, I guess, and to which I really like the lyrics...

Bruce Springsteen, The River (title track):

(from around the middle)

I got a job workin' construction for a Johnstown company,

But lately there ain't been much work,

On account of the economy,

Now all those things that seemed so important,

Well, mister, they vanish right into the air,

Now I just act like I don't remember,

And Mary acts like she don't care...

Well I remember us riding in my brother's car,

Her body tan and wet down at the resevoir...

At night on those banks I'd lie awake,

And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take.

Now those memories come back to haunt me,

They haunt me like a curse...

Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse

That sends me down to the River,

though I know the river is dry,

sends me down to the River,

Tonight.

I always loved that line! There are 2 songs on that lp that are maybe the best songs never to become big hits. "And It Stoned Me" and "Into The Mystic." Too bad the lp is horribly recorded. I keep picking up copies at thrift stores hoping one of them will sound good.14.gif The CD isn't bad though.

Van Morrison is my favorite, but here is my close second:

TUMBLING DICE

(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Women think I'm tasty, but they're always tryin' to waste me

And make me burn the candle right down,

But baby, baby, I don't need no jewels in my crown.

'Cause all you women is low down gamblers,

Cheatin' like I don't know how,

But baby, baby, there's fever in the funk house now.

This low down *****in' got my poor feet a itchin',

Don't you know you know the duece is still wild.

Baby, I can't stay, you got to roll me

And call me the tumblin' dice.

Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry,

Don't you see the time flashin' by.

Honey, got no money,

I'm all sixes and sevens and nines.

Say now baby, I'm the rank outsider,

You can be my partner in crime.

But baby, I can't stay,

You got to roll me and call me the tumblin',

Roll me and call me the tumblin' dice.

Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter,

Playin' the field ev'ry night.

But baby, I can't stay,

You got to roll me and call me the tumblin' dice, (Call me the tumblin')

Got to roll me (yayes), Got to roll me, Got to roll me (Oh yeah)

Got to roll me

Got to roll me (yeah)

Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)

Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)

Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)

Got to roll me

My baby, call me the tumblin' dice, yeah

Got to roll me

Baby sweet as sugar (Got to roll me)

Yeah, my, my, my yeah (Got to roll me)

I went down baby, oh

Got to roll me (hit me)

Baby I'm down

I think these should be posted in every office and school room!

From the album Hell Freezes Over (1994)

I turn on the tube and what do I see

A whole lotta people cryin' 'Don't blame me'

They point their crooked little fingers ar everybody else

Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves

Victim of this, victim of that

Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

Get over it

Get over it

All this whinin' and cryin' and pitchin' a fit

Get over it, get over it

You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash

But you might feel better if I gave you some cash

The more I think about it, Old Billy was right

Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight

You don't want to work, you want to live like a king

But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing

Get over it

Get over it

If you don't want to play, then you might as well split

Get over it, Get over it

It's like going to confession every time I hear you speak

You're makin' the most of your losin' streak

Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain

You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain

You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown

Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down

Complain about the present and blame it on the past

I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ***

Get over it

Get over it

All this *****in' and moanin' and pitchin' a fit

Get over it, get over it

Get over it

Get over it

It's gotta stop sometime, so why don't you quit

Get over it, get over it

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.

And then one day you wake to find ten years have got behind you.

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over,

Thought I'd something more to say.

Not my absolute favorite, per se, but I really dig the lyrics:

xmingus.jpg

A Chair in the Sky

by Joni Mitchell

The rain slammed hard as bars

It caught me by surprise

Mutts of the planet

And shook me down for alibis

I'm waiting

For the keeper to release me

Debating this sentence

Biding my time

In memories

Of old friends of mine

In daydreams of Birdland

I see my soul on fire

Burning up the bandstand

Next time

I'll be bigger!

I'll be better than ever!

I'll be happily attached

To my cold hard cash!

But now Manhattan holds me

To a chair in the sky

With the bird in my ears

And boats in my eyes

Going by

There are things I wish I'd done

Some friends I'm gonna miss

Beautiful lovers

I never got the chance to kiss

Daydreamin' drugs the pain of living

Processions of missing

Lovers and friends

Fade in and they fade out again

In these daydreams of rebirth

I see myself in style

Raking in what I'm worth

Next time

I'll be bigger!

I'll be better than ever!

I'll be resurrected royal!

I'll be rich as standard oil!

But now Manhattan holds me

To a chair in the sky

With the bird in my ears

And boats in my eyes

Going by

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,

They slither while they pass they slip away across the universe

Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind,

Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru de va om

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,

They call me on and on across the universe,

Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they

Tumble blindly as they make their way

Across the universe

Jai guru deva om

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter, shades of earth are ringing

Through my open ears inciting and inviting me

Limitless undying love which shines around me like a

million suns and calls me on and on

Across the universe

Jai guru deva om

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world
