Where do YOU work?

As an daily reader/poster on this forum it seems like I've grown to know you guys. Although we never have face-to-face discussion, and I don't even know many of your real names it seems like we all share a really close bond. I was recently reading a thread and asked myself this question. What do all these guys do for a living? So my question to you is... (if you care to answer) Where are you from? City/State? and What is your occupation?

It seems like you should know these things about people that you consider friends.16.gif

Yea, we know Amy, but what do you DO?

Seems this was on a sitcom lately, where when dating the question always pertained to line of work/occupation. But it can be twisted to (this is my own personal version):

I do Led Zeppelin

I do Jack Daniels

I do gardening

I do musical critical listening

I do hot tubs, cigars, jazz, and good food

I do books about outer space and war history

I do love beautiful women

I do act crazy

I do become a real chatty Cathy on phones and Forums

I do believe that life is a minestrone-I want to do a little of everything

I do photography, weddings for a living- work out of my home. Still use real film. One of most highly sought after photogs in central Indiana area. Working for Rex Grossman, Chicago Bears QB next year.

Thanks,

Michael

Do you do baby portraits??

For now, I'm simply adjusting to being a new mom. I've been staying home a lot, and working on home improvement projects. 1.gif

At Klipsch, my main responsibility is posting content to and maintaining the website. I also work in Product Development for our multimedia line...

Oh man!! Don't remind me. My job was eliminated 3 weeks ago so I'm sittin' at home collecting unemployment (yea right, $249/week, sheeesh) because no one is hiring till after the first of the year. I refuse to go back to retail.

But let's hope I can still work in the same field I was in. Legal. I do have a lead as a Legal Videographer. If I like it I may go for my CLVS (Certified Legal Video Specialist). The down side is that there is a lot of traveling and since I have Diabetes it puts a fear into me about getting the right food on time. And insulin doesn't always travel very well.

Was raised and currently reside in Allen Park, Michigan. Born in Detroit. Lived in Fallon, Nevada for 7 years.

I am an Automotive Product Designer at Visteon Corporation (formerly part of Ford Motor Company)

My duties bridge between the Engineering and the Information Technology Departments. I do virtual model animation, design review video production, advanced graphics, web development and global visualization system software support. In short: I'm a hypermedia specialist.

After 24 years of design, I no longer work with CAD, but when I did, I had to know 4 disciplines: Unigraphics, Pro/Engineer, I-DEAS & PDGS. Today, CATIA is also used, while PDGS (a Ford-only tool) has been phased-out. All are 3D solid modeling packages.

Wow! It seems like everyone either has some type of tech job, or owns their own business. I have no idea what I want to do, but I know I want to open some type of business. I don't feel I should be spending so much time in college to get out and work the rest of my life just to "pay The Man." While still young, I'm constantly trying to think of new business ventures, however I'm constantly unsuccessful in my thinking.

neomartic: One reason to consider college in the first place is so you will know HOW to start a business. Perhaps, a business degree is what you need to get you started? Having that piece of cloth hanging on your wall lends credibility to your business and helps assure your clients that you do have some idea of what you are doing. The only way to do that without a degree is through years of making mistakes, hard work, experience and word-of-mouth. Until you get there, however, credibility & success can be quite ellusive. The degree can give you a leg-up on your competitors. But, they probably have a degree, too, so be ready to work hard!

I am 53 and I am just short of having my Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Michigan. I do have my Associates. If I had it to do all over again: I would have went for that Bachelor's degree when I was young and had the chance. I got drafted into the military right out of high school and never had the chance. I got by working hard and learning everything I could. I also made plenty of mistakes. We did okay, but they changed the rules along the way and began to require a degree to be hired for most any job. Nobody told me when I was young that the rules would change. My advice, for what it's worth: Consider getting a degree while you are still young. You live not far away from me and I know the job market around here. If I had that degree I would be so much farther ahead than where I am now. And, considering that I like my job, that says a lot!

The founder of this thread exclaims:

"Wow! It seems like everyone either has some type of tech job, or owns their own business."

How else do we get the freedom to buy all these toys and still spend hours each day typing technical manuals to each other?

Like my lil bro sez "When you own your own business, you can work whenever you want, like ALL THE TIME" But I'd say its fairly modern, and a good life. Make money doing whatever makes you happy.

Michael- always the philosopher.
