Looking for song ideas

Recommended Posts

There's a local Public Radio station I listen to on a fairly regular basis, does a lot of different one or two hour shows in the evening, Women Alive (female artists), Blue Monday (Jazz and blues), Back Porch Harmony (country and bluegrass), and my favorite, The Vets Show (Vietnam era songs).

I didn't realize it, but the DJ for the Vets show is a local guy and one of our customers. (He drives 90 miles once a week one way to the station to do the show, no pay for the drive and the DJ is a volunteer position) The station is moving into a new building and changing their format, there will be no more Vets show. When I discovered he was the DJ was when I learned they were cutting out his show. 15.gif

He asked me what I'd like to hear on his last night, never realized I was a frequent listener. I'm looking for suggestions. Right now I have on my list:

Opening song: Star Spangled Banner Jimi Hendrix

Closing song: This Is The End Jim Morrison (May have another song name)

Whogie Whatchie (I forget his name) Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road

I'm looking for more ideas of obscure, B side 70's songs. He won't/doesn't play mainstream stuff that you'd hear on the 70's radio station.

Any ideas would be great. Also, if you'd care to listen to the last show, it's simulcast at www.kaxe.org. Should be a good night of listening.

"Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and I think War, but could have been the Animals.

"I Used to Sleep at the Feet of Old Glory" by John Prine

A side but: What's Goin On", Marvin Gay

"Letter to my Brother" can't recall the artist.

Oh, and pick your favorite from Buffalo Springfield

I hope this does not offend any vets, but being just a tad younger then that era, and still very aware of its repercussions growing up I always was very into Holliday Inn Cambodia by the Dead Kennedys. Surely not a song from the time of the war (1979 I think) but it does strike a nerve. For sure something you wont hear on mainstream radio.

Others that come to mind:

Ballad of the Green Beret Barry Saddler

Fortunate son (probably to main stream) - CCR

Signs - Five Man Electrical Band

Black Is Black - Los Bravos

Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum

Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band

War - Edwin Starr

Where Have All the Flowers Gone - The Kingston Trio

Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock

And I totally love This Is The End idea by The Doors

How about Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction"? Or Country Joe McDonald's "Fixin to Die Rag"? You know.."gimme an F"..etc.

There's also Neil Young's song "Ohio" about the Kent State shootings, brought on by the National Guard during the 'Nam war protests performed w/CS+N..and the more obscure Kent State Blues by Steve Miller band (album was "number 5")

I could go on but I ramble...

Steve
