Any guitarist can play a Gibson: only a great one can play a FENDER!!!

It's all in good fun but the fact is most ANY guitarist can play a Strat, the Les Paul is much more difficult.

I also agree w/Duke about the deluxe mini humbuckers, very sweet sound.

Indeed, Segovia was a master.

Garcia would have been a lot better if he could have kept the needle out of his arm.

Needle or not, listen to Dick's Picks 15's version of Eyes Of The World from Englishtown Racetrack in 1977 (just one example and I could name 100). Garcia could play. Maybe not the most technically proficient guitarist of all-time but still my favorite. He had his moments like most but all his really great stuff was done live and the best of it in 1977/78 IMO.

Kenny Burrell was my favorite jazz guitarist if anyone cares.

EeeGads, what a broad topic. I know we've strayed away from Thebes intended format, but this is a far reaching topic. There are so many wonderful guitarist to choose from.

And for the Record, Jimmy Page definitely ranks with the best the world has ever known. But so does Hendrix, Clapton, BB King, and Vaughn. Scratch Vanhalen, I never really though he was that good, just fast. So, if I were to select what I considered to be the best guitarist ever, I'd have to list them by type of music.

Chevy is better than Ford ! I'll knock it off when Led Zepplin reforms with Bonzo. Jimmy Paige has done nothing without Robert Plant. Let"s see The Firm with Paul Rodgers, they were big huh, Paige;Cloverdale, They were real popular too. Unledded that recieved warm reviews. So don't harp about Paige being the best, though he really is ONE of the best. THE BEST is really kinda a not fair type of question with no REAL one answer. All this about the best and we all seem to overlook ESTABON!!! Peace Brother!

Keith RIchards' is a pretty fair rythym guitarist and a helluva composer--I mean. anyone who can write the "Satisfaction" riff is OK with me. I mean, is there REALLY any question that this is the single most indendifiable riff in the history of Rock and Roll and arguably the greatest tune in the whole history of the music?

To be honest I haven't even hears of half of the guys you folks are nominating, but I'll stick with Charlie Christian as the "best" or most "important" guitar player in the history of POPULAR music.

"Its like trying to pick the greatest baseball player."

Holding back, holding back...don 't want to hijack the thread or start a new one.....

I've already said that Andres Segovia was the Babe Ruth of the guitar.

Eddie Van Halen is #70 on that Rolling Stone list??? I love Joni

Mtchell, but should she be #72? Also, I didn't see Slash listed at

all. Bogus list (even for rockers).
