I am not a moderator here either but this needs to stop, now. Subjective comments and suggestions are made every day on this forum by many, including myself and the both of you combatants. We all should just get used to it and do our part to help one another out the best way we know how. I do agree though that we too often suggest things that were not asked for, like for example: Poster asks, "Which amp would mate better with my speakers, amp A or amp B?" Replier says, "You should get amp C." Or how about this one. "Which subwoofer should I get, the 12 inch or the 15 inch?" "You should build a DIY 18 inch sub." Get my point? Folks, please don't trash me because of my observations. Bill

IMO it's compression, poor performance, poor recordings and poor mixes that explain the sorry state of recorded music today. Many vinyl records sound very good because they were well recorded excellent performances that weren't compressed for file storage or mixed to be heard on car speakers. They don't sound good just because a tiny diamond is dragged over wavy plastic.Some of the posts in this thread focus too much on portability and the comparison of the triangular Pono player to iPods and the like. IMO that misses the point. Portability is not the primary goal of the Pono player. The fact that it can be easily transported from one SOTA stereo system to another is a bonus, not its reason for existence. Neil Young compared music streaming (Pandora, Spotify, etc.) to FM radio of old. He compared Pono to record players of old. The inferior sound quality of radio or streaming allows for portability and sampling of new music. The record, and now Pono, allow favored music to be experienced at the best quality the artist, producer, recording company, etc. choose to make available. Pono is not seen as replacing iPods, streamed audio, or even CDs, but rather as a way to get high quality recordings to play through high quality systems. Perhaps more important, the support for Pono, or similar devices, sends a message to the music industry that there is a demand for well recorded, excellent performances with all the dynamics and frequency range the digital medium permits. If those who demand more than is presently available from CDs, mp3s, etc. show support for Pono (or some other serious alternative) the likelihood that quality digital recordings will be available at a reasonable cost increases. If there isn't strong support, the industry could easily conclude that Mp3s are enough. One poster suggested that careful cleaning and handling of vinyl can remove ticks and pops. I disagree. Despite best efforts, vinyl is inherently prone to audio artifacts to which digital is not. I repeat, excellent vinyl recordings are excellent for many reasons, but being recorded to a vinyl disc is not one of them. The same information could be recorded and played back digitally without any possibility of surface noise, static, dirt, worn stylus, etc. The best digital has the potential to eclipse the best analog. What prevents that is a perception that the market is satisfied with mp3s, streamed audio, etc., and that consumers won't support the additional expense (or large file sizes) of high quality digital recordings of excellent music. Neil Young is trying to alter that perception. I wish him well. For $300 (about the cost of a very good cartridge) I'm willing to sample the product before condemning it. At the least it shows an interest in quality recorded music. The original goal of Pono on Kickstarter was $800,000.00, as of the time this was typed,"$3,786,498 pledged of $800,000 goal." If nothing else, the powers that be in the music industry ought to take note. YMMV

Autocalibration can't correct things like modulation distortion from non-horn loaded woofer. Also, a horn loaded woofer will need to move in and out less to produce the same output. In general, less movement means less distortion and means more dynamics (less travel means a faster reaction time). Over its rated frequency range, a horn loaded 15" woofer is easily comparable to 3 or more 15" direct radiators in output. A horn loaded bass-bin adds that much to the efficiency! The science here is pretty clear (it's a matter of fact, not opinion and yes there is a measurable difference in distortion), assuming the OP wants accuracy with a limit frequency range. Now, if the OP wants something a little more distortion and wants to go lower than a lot of horn loaded bass bins can, that's up to their taste/choice. I'm going to guess that a lot of folks prefer lower frequency response, and there's nothing wrong with that if that's what they want. However, if a person is willing to run subs, an all horn loaded speaker setup can be awesome. You're correct that imaging has a lot to do with placement, which is why I made sure both sets of speakers were placed correctly. I used the RF-83's in two different apartments too so I am comfortable saying my issue wasn't the room or placement. I think the difference I'm hearing wrt to imaging has a lot to do with how a horn disperses it's sound into a room. The mid-range horn on the La Scala's is huge compared to the horn on the RF-83's. Note I'm not saying the reference series has bad imaging, I'm just saying it's not as good as these bigger horns can provide. There appears to be some give and take here too as these smaller horns have awesome frequency response up to 23kHz.

Most likely, I am misunderstanding your predicament. You have thought of this already or it is just not an option. What I do understand is your current player will not stream from internet? I have "chromecast" in my bedroom and it is limited to set sources. My question, or thought, is why don't you just stream straight from your laptop or computer? That way you may hear anything and everything you want. I go straight from my laptop into 2-channel with very good results. For some reason I am having a bad feeling this has nothing to do with your problem???

Before anybody comments, I know this isn't "2 channel audio," but the subject is darn sure not home theater either. I posted an issue,,,still really unresolved...in HT about why my HT receiver was attenuating the rear channels in what was supposed to be pass through mode. Still don't understand that as the speakers are identical as is the amplifier output, but figured out how to change output levels on the Roland R-44 to reduce the front to a decent balance. Anyway, got my Spankers surround recording made in 2001 playing in 4 channel 24/96. I've been told so many times over the past decade "it isn't that simple, your approach is BS, surround doesn't work, etc" I half believed it. For something that doesn't work, I am hearing a completely immersive image where I am at a front row table in the Saxon Street Pub. Bottles clink, people shuffle, and don't do so from the stage. The band is arrayed precisely as the photos I have show and firmly planted. It isn't perfect, as my rear speakers, while identical to the front, are up about 7 feet on the wall and offset to the left as the wiring was put there by the previous owner. Since I only use it for HT I haven't messed with it. I remain convinced that a surround sound system needs four identical speakers in identical positions...a room with 4 usable corners would be perfect. Can't swing that in this house but I can get close in my library which I intend to do. I'll get back to experimenting with SoundCube now that I have an easily portable 4 channel recording device. I built all the others and they were PC based and a bit of a hassle. The Roland may not be quite the quality, but it is excellent and certainly easy to move around. I'll be able to get a whole rig sans mike stands in a medium equipment case. Plus, we'll have the new pipe organ in the church by the end of June and I'll be busy recording the dedication and such. I also hope the relationship I'm developing with the organ contractors will yield some opportunities. Dave

I'll be using Dayton metallized polypropylenes, bypassed with Dayton film and tin foils. If these caps are good enough for the 60th Anniversary Edition of the Klipschorn, then I think it's probably okay to use them here. The bypassing treatment is a JBL thing, and we all know how bad their stuff sucks, right? : ) I took the one of the networks to Parts Express with me, and had them pull a few brands that were in consideration, the Daytons just looked like they would present less issues. This shot is of my modestly sized work area. On the bench are all the parts for two pairs of RF-7s, an RC-7, and Youthman's RF-7iis. I prefer Xcelite and Klein tools for the most part, but I really like my Wiha pliers. My soldering station is a Hakko 888D, and I use T18-D24 and D24 tips. I use a Mastech 390-570 for taking basic inductance and capacitance measurements. I use good parts, and in the over a decade of doing this, I've never received a bad part (though I sure did ruin a few early on).

I suspect that if we all behave and no one starts ranting, raving, or distasteful argument we might get away with it. But not my call. John

Scrappy, could you do me a favor and quit referencing my posts. I will 100% do the same for you going forward. Also, this is the third or forth time you've gone back and said something I did not say or flat out criticized my thoughts for no reason with no technical information to back it up. I said PERSONALLY. I did not say he NEEDED la scala's. This is just like your other posts jumping on my for stating my opinion when the OP asked for it. Or one of your many others that purposely counters something I stated, but without any facts or reason, etc. In short, if all your going to do is criticize me, I'd rather not talk to you. When anyone starts a post with I or personally, it is always their opinion (I thought was obvious but...). They aren't saying it's the only way to do something or that the OP must do it. For others this is the crap I have to deal with to post here. On the bright side, everyone else seems nice. the term "in my opinion" REALLY belongs in this statement. Just because YOU think the heritage speakers are better for movies does not mean they are. I dislike when people say that kind of stuff as so many new people scan these forums for info. They may read your quote and think that they have to buy heritage stuff for a great "movie" sound. And that is just not the case. Everyone's ears are different.

Good eye Tom, I don't know enough to catch those things. $800 each, wow must be the diaphragm itself more then the housing were the quality is. Well I guess depending how the aftermarkets sound you could get by with a pair for 1200.00 but then end up spending 1600.00 on the diaphragms down the road. Putting you at 2800 a pair which I don't think that would be a good deal. Again still needing to buy the throat adapter if needed adding extra cost to things. I just went back to the posting and see where they listed that they had, had the diaphragms replaced. Guess I should read all of the description.

In the summer of 2012 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of going taking a motorcycle trip to Bethel, NY and the Woodstock Museum & concert site. I took these photos on the way at Woodstock Harley-Davidson in nearby Kingston, NY...

The chorus ii are my all time favorite speaker. I have a couple 200watt adcom mono blocks than run them very nicely. My choice solid state setup is my adcom pre with a bbe882i with a crown xls2500. I have pushed them in this setup to 116db @ about 5ft away and sounded clear and just left that test at that. So the listed 120+db is true. I run them mostly on tubes at about 60wpc now and they are also very happy sounding. chorus ii can eat up watts with the best of them specially for a full range "home" monitor edit: you will be set for life with your adcom amp. they go together very, very well
