  3. Mornin' all. I was mostly MIA yesterday ... finally caught a small break on some outdoor projects. Sorry I missed the toaster competition. Wasn't 'Burnt Toast' the name of a group in the late '60s? Limited in my projects today with more rain on the way. Just itching to start painting after dispensing what feels like 5k lbs of caulk around the house. Oh well. We'll be bitching about the lack of moisture and our water bills in 6 weeks or so. Try to check back in a bit. Cheers (and esp to the toaster winner).

  6. For any just picking up here we had some fun yesterday. So that you don't have to read it all I'll give you the short version. On page 399 I wondered who would be first to page 400 and offered up a toaster as the prize for the first to get there. Then we all jumped in the fray and went on forever till duder informed us we had blasted through 400 and were on 402. Until you refreshed the page you really couldn't tell. Turns out Carl was the winner with me and Brian on either side of 400. Waiting on the Time Warner guy to fix my phones and having the first cup with LF. Cheers Ladies and Gents

  8. Greetings after a lengthy hiatus from the great far northwest! After mostly work related time consumption, including a trip to TX, I'm back in the saddle. Looking over some posts, there's been some spice in the water and it looks to have been an ok time to be away! Anyway, it's "greening up" here, high 60's and sunny! If you've never been to Alaska - May/June is wonderful! We also got my wife a new bicycle and I have a trailer to pull the boys in on mine - now to get out there and enjoy that and shed some winter lbs! The java today is via Keurig - sorry planet. It's good though! Have a great week all!

  13. What are you all smoking ? I left for a few hours and come back and it's like 5 pages later. I could have sent you a toaster, it only toast one and a half sides but it's silver, and has it's own non removable crumbs.

  14. One reason I think horns reproduce brass so well is that brass are able to achieve a higher dynamic contrast than most other acoustic instruments, and horn speakers reproduce that well too.

  17. Morning all. Rain has been the order of the day for the last several days. Everything is soggy. Had to go a different way to work this morning as a huge tree blocked the road in the road that I was taking. It looked like a healthy tree but I guess the combination of soaked ground and some stout wind did it in. Coffee was good. I'm working on my last bit of Kona and then I guess it's back to store beans. We have it tough here don't we?

  18. Not everyone "gets" Jeff Beck. He's one of the original rock guitar hero's, along with Clapton, Page and Hendrix. He has his own definitive style and great command of the instrument. That being said, it took me many years to come to really appreciate his playing, and I've been playing guitar for almost forty years. I recommend these albums, Wired, Blow by Blow and Truth. As well, Flash, from the late 80's, has some good stuff on it too. When all is said and done, you just might not dig him, and that's o.k.

  26. This is an interesting concept. On occasion I've experienced a reverb, or echo-like, effect in some amplifiers which wrap the feedback loop from the opt secondary to the voltage amp cathode. When removing the global loop and replacing it with local feedback, the effect disappears making me believe that it's caused by phase distortion. Paradoxically though, in my amps which use frequency selective local feedback (from a typical series RC filter), there is no audible effect from the unquestionable phase distortion which is present. I look forward to Ken's thoughts on this. Maynard

  28. "If we weren't all crazy, we would go insane." -- Jimmy Regarding the genre, we built our house with the idea that it would incorporate many of the things we love about beach houses in the keys, spain, greece, bimini, belize, etc. I'm always on the lookout for stuff that will transport people into that mindset. It's harder than it seems unless you're already into that sort of thing. Most people who are in to traditional neutral colors just think we are off our rocker. Pretty much the entire house is whites, sea greens, blues, teals, etc., except for the theater room which is black and pirate themed. Hardly the standard color theme. Did I mention that this is difficult?

  30. 2 RCA cables from the L/R preouts of the Onkyo to the R/L inputs of the Hafler. L/R speakers to the speaker output terminals of the amp. All other speakers direct from the speaker terminals of the Onkyo.

  32. Well I feel sheepish. I'm somewhat of a fan of flamenco type of music. Was listening to Armik this weekend who composes stuff that was inspired by Spain and Greece, and I kept thinking to myself, you know, if I had some Klipsch THX ceiling speakers and a good Spotify channel, I could just play this stuff as background music 24/7.

  40. I'm not sure if this has been settled yet, as I haven't gotten around to reading all seven pages, but it looks like a Patrician IV to me. The IVs were a couple inches taller (62" vs. 60") than the IIIs and a bit narrower. Also the side panels on the IV were at 90 degrees from the front, while the III had the same panels at a bit more of an oblique angle. The Pat III had a 12" mid-bass woofer mounted in a wooden exponential horn on the top of the cabinet. The IV carried some oddball twin horn compression drivers. The IIIs had the early, narrow T-35 tweeter. The IVs could have the early or later T-35, the T-350, which looks like a T-35 time forgot, or even, on occasion an Ionovac tweeter. (I'll have to look that last up, as I am mining dusty corners of my memory here.) Fortunately, all the Electro-Voice T-35 and 350 variants used the same voice coil and diaphragm assembly, and repairs can still be made. The III I had was a job to get into, as you had to remove the mahogany shroud to get at the smaller drivers. The 18" was accessed through a hatch in the back, just like the Klipschorn. The IV was much simpler - there were tiny brass Philips screws in several of the brass rosettes. Once you got those out, and start from the bottom or the top may swing out prematurely and bop you in the head, the front panel could be lifted up and out of a slot. The woofer was behind a sheet of plywood, and everything else was readily open.

  41. I don't understand why a lot of rock is popular. I get the same feeling about the eagles and so much rock. You can only here the same songs over and over so many times. I've been burnt out on the stuff for years except for some Hendrix, Crimson, Beefheart and Zappa. Live at Ronnie's I thought was alright. I've resorted to world music of all forms to find new sounds.

  42. "Sine waves at 20 Hz coming from dual R-115SWs measured 110 dB at my main listening position—enough to make my vision blurry and trigger nausea. Seriously, that's more bass than I need." "The sub is especially generous when it comes to doling out bass in the 20-30 Hz region. " I've tried to say the same thing multiple times except maybe not so eloquently stated and people were like, meh.

  44. So was the one Pat ball that wasn't deflated the one they used for kicking? It would make sense that a kicker wouldn't want a deflated ball, I might be wrong on that, but it would explain why one out of the whole batch was a legal ball.
