  3. Tigerman "Ok on the THERMOSTAT issues, I heard way back when, that if you run a too cool thermostat, the oil can begin to collect in the journals and galleys and begin to plug stuff up! I think the mechanics can correct me on that one, but it is something I never forgot." That was Quakerstate Oil that did this (I saw valve covers removed from a mustang once where the guy religiously used Quaker, the sludge and build up was incredible he had blocked oil journals and required an engine rebuild / replacement) In my younger days before computers running cars I had a gen 2 mustang with a 302 and a 4 core radiator that just kept overheating, it was a huge PITA I was advised to run a little cooler thermostat which did help and I have always used a 10 degree cooler stat since...........I dont get into the physics of it, Just one of my many quirks I guess...............Now on the newer computer controlled cars I know it becomes an issue, The 1985 has a brain but it is nothing like what we deal with in todays cars Only thing that happens is the stat opens maybe 60 seconds earlier allowing the cooling system to circulate faster the engine will still reach normal operating temps

  5. Morning all Have a friend from high school that was trapped in a building next to the Towers for nearly 7 hours after the initial plane hit. Her and four fellow workers were rescued by a fireman that was doing search and rescue. She as buried under rubble and suffered a fairly serious head injury that has resulted in her having memory loss. Every year she calls me trying to connect how we know each other...it's always a really tough call to take....but by the end of the call she is happy to regain the knowledge of why I'm in her contact list. She calls everyone on her contact list.....every year..... Freedom Isn't Free and Peace Isn't Pretty NEVER FORGET - 9/11

  6. Reno Air races coming up next week, be the first time in 20+ years i can now, W/Guest, get in free. Do not know if we will go or not as of yet, Dental must be under control first. I own a Hanger now so 24/7/365 acess is no problem. The way they have this set up is, general admin is $100+ or - (per 5 days) depending on seating, this will get you acess to miller/wine. Pit Pass is $100+ or - (Per 5 days) and that is where the "Hanger Bar" is at, (real Bar). Will never pay for this crap again. i like free. Wife and i used to say it costs $200+ (each) for a BM. http://airrace.org/

  10. I find that remasters are hit or miss. Sometimes they absolutely destroy the sound! I am thoroughly disgusted with what they did to the latest Linda Ronstadt release "Just One Look." It is AWFUL! They managed to compress it even more than it already was and added a grating, brassy, metallic like sound. More upsetting was that I had bought the expensive version from HDTracks. I tried to find out who remastered this but no one seems to be claiming it... they should be embarrassed. I am shocked to read some of the reviews on Amazon about how great the remaster is... I cannot imagine who these people are and how they are coming to that conclusion. I was serious when I suggested that we get the names of these butchers! I'd like to tell them what I think but I don't imagine they care... they certainly didn't care what they did to those songs.

  11. Well it is Friday and I have survived a three day work week. Getting ready for the record show this weekend. Also, setting up my new laptop with JRiver and syncing all my music that is on an external 2T drive. I love that JRiver gets the album art automatically. It would take forever one at a time. I have just over 23,000 songs on this thing.

  15. Had a few mojitos a couple of weeks ago, a great drink when it's hot, very refreshing. Never tried that, but at one time we had it planted along a walkway, when it grew over the walkway and you walked by it would make the whole area smell good. Forgot about that, wish it was spring so I could get some started.

  17. Good evening my friends. Just went through a few pages of posts to catch up. SO much going on...! Chuck, too funny ...you get buzzed, then start a food festival Actually, that goes on here, as I always have a glass or two of VINO while prepping and cooking dinner. Have to be REAL careful of the Santoku and Chef's knives, as I have done some silly things with them when not thinking, but enjoying the drinking too much instead ! dTel, EXCELLENT upgrade all around!, room really makes since with the lowered entertainment setup, almost makes me want to see an 80" up there !! Again, great work on making it all fit... Mark, I just know that somewhere in your home, the temps are cool and comfy We are getting much needed rain after a LONG dry spell! NEWS, my neighbor that LOVES my jazz and new age music bellowing from my deck system just put her home up for sale TODAY!, open house signs with arrows pointing the way in our gated neighborhood to her home. It has been a great two or so years having her as a next door neighbor. She has bought a home down in FL. which is on the ocean front !! On the other hand, I was thinking how COOL it would be if an audio enthusiast move in! So far, I believe I am the only one in this area..... Ok on the THERMOSTAT issues, I heard way back when, that if you run a too cool thermostat, the oil can begin to collect in the journals and galleys and begin to plug stuff up! I think the mechanics can correct me on that one, but it is something I never forgot. I am fine with the forum name change Coffee, Cables, Cocktails and WINE .....another idea On the CD issue........I bought my first player in 1986 and the first TWO CDs I bought the same day were a Telarc (my favorite classical label) sampler and believe it or not, a REALISTIC CD compilation of movie themes...! The CD player was so early, it did not even come with a REMOTE! Bought at Radio Shack, made by Hitachi and considered a 'second generation' unit... The thing about the CD mastering process.........yeah, they have 20bit and all that, thing is, the player is STILL limited to 16/44.1 you just can't get away from that. I think the early transfers (AAD - ADD) are probably about as good as it gets. This is why I have been ordering DVD-A and BluRay audio with a sprinkle of SACD as well.....they are formats that exceed the CD.. End of my commentary for the evening. Hoping that a new BluRay audio disc will be in for tomorrow night's listening session over on RTM... Enjoy the evening my friends... .......Gary

  19. Hey Wards are you going with mc21 ?? I have not seen enough to make me jump to it although they are offering a special upgrade price I installed 20 on my new laptop and it worked flawlessly. Then I installed 21 and pointed it to the exact drive 20 just indexed. I'm having a hell of a time getting 21 to get the cover art. First I did a plain import with "get artwork and build thumbnails". That didn't work, so I did a library backup in 20 and restored it in 21. The music files showed but again no artwork. Right now working on a second import over the restored library to see if the artwork appears. So far, I'm not very impressed with 21. The up side is I still have 20 that works great.

  21. Good story Jason. I have a Sonny Rollins CD titled "Concert For 911". It starts with Sonny doing a short monologue that never fails to trigger memories from that morning. I will play it today for the LF. And as Jason said......"never forget".

  24. Well, I found this: "The latest Linda Ronstadt compilation has just been released by Rhino Entertainment and is available everywhere. The two disk collection, "Just One Look - Classic Linda Ronstadt," contains thirty of her best performances, including most of her big hit singles, newly remastered in Hi-Resolution digital by John Boylan. "

  27. Try reading on this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/566866/does-a-dac-make-a-giant-difference I believe that there are many inaccuracies in this thread, including decision bias linked to perceived listening differences that were not ABX tested but that correlate instead to the perceived price of the device. The real issue is that a DAC is more of an analog device than a digital device, and many people forget that the DAC must have good analog output electronics. The following is from Wikipedia: I believe that a lot of people obsess over DACs when they should be worried about other things--like 1) room acoustics and acoustic treatments, 2) placement of loudspeakers within the room and any nearfield objects in the way of the speakers - especially between the loudspeakers and the path to the listeners (including coffee tables, etc.), and 3) the performance characteristics of the loudspeakers themselves (including analog or digital crossover performance)-- There is far more variation in performance found in those things than in DACs. That's not an opinion-that's fact. Remember also that video DACs perform their duties at greater than 100x higher data rates and a couple of orders of magnitude more dynamic range than do audio DACs and human vision is a VERY discerning instrument compared to the human hearing system: any discrepancies in video DAC performance is quite visible. 29. Many have asked I'd retire there aside from being close to Hope. But here are a couple of more reasons. Growing up, the Egg House was one of those places anyone could buy a six pack who was big enough to carry it to the register. I'm sure they've changed their ways but it still looks the same... Naaman's is awesome. Might want to get a bid from them for next year's Hope plant feed. Better than Jakes! Dave

  36. 1. the more expensive, typically the prettier the jewelry. 2. Analog output section is a major issue as stated above 3. Filter topography - steep or minimum phase or apodizing, etc ..... 4. Chipset and number of bits / sample rate 5. Over sampling / Up sampling vs Non-oversampling 6. No chip such as the Sabre 32 but all the filter and conversion done in silicone large scale / programmable 7. Direct conversion such as NAD / Ti I believe All the above can have something to do with the sound quality, even the jewelry. So bits might be bits, but there are a lot of things that can have an effect on the overall presentation and sound. The thing is that the changes are not typically huge like changing loudspeakers or room treatments. Figure out where you want spend your money. The last 5-10%.

  39. I doubt there will be anymore discussion of booze than before. If you see it going that way please say so. We sure don't want to lose one of our charter members Thanks for the reply Joe. LF has a lot of early disc I noticed when unpacking. Hope most are playable. I asked why so many disc and it turns out her late husband played them on changers in his dental practice. She said he hated Muzak.

  42. Its the source not the disc, I have several redbook pre 2000's that can sound wonderful if played on the right setup (your DAC can make a HUGE difference on SQ) Digital done right requires the same commitment or more you put into a vinyl rig to make it sound pleasing (especially true for any of us old geezers raised on vinyl

Interesting new title to the thread along with the comments. Will let others decide. Just want to note that after many years sober, I'd stay out of the loop if the emphasis shifted to 'cocktails'. Have a great day and cheers!

I can't yet imagine the loss you've already suffered (my 1st dog), but do want to make the right decisions at the right times. 115 pounds down to 85 has been tough to watch, but for now he gets to visit the beach and Mt.
