  10. Great pics Luther! I could tell just by looking that there was more than one anal retentive person in attendance. Many thanks to my brother who drove 3 hours to help me this weekend. I wouldn't have gotten a fraction of the amount of progress made that I did if he didn't help. As it is I have a bunch left but here's where I left off. The floor was a bee-ah-tch. Especially around the drain. One particular piece took about 15 minutes as it kept crumbling on me. I'm using porcelain on the walls but the floor is a grainy soap stone like material that's slip resistant. The down side is that it crumbles easily. Here's the drain. Most of the perimeter had to be laid a couple tiles at a time. Very tedious. Edit for typos

  13. Hey gang, Happy Tuesday. Celebrating Coffee Day with 2.5 cups down. Carl, that project is looking great. Tile work can be tedious but worth it. Especially like the idea of floor tile. On our remodel, we opted for a fancy shower pan on the floor but had the ceiling tiled. I like your approach better I think. Try to check back later. Cheers guys.

(sarcasm mode on). LEAVE THEM ALONE and listen for 30 days, then see if you really need to spend more money on them. Mine are bone stock and are gonna stay that way.

  25. From Post: Available for the first time since it was purchased...an amazing system purchased from Hi-Fi Hutch (http://www.trademarkia.com/hfh-73177218.html) in 1975. They don't make anything like this anymore. 1 - BK WO Belle Kilpsch Center Loudspeaker ( ) 2 - KB WO Belle Kilpsch Corner KLIPSCHORN (http://www.audioclassics.com/detail?detail=KLIPSCHORN&nav=cat) 1 - McIntosh MC2205 - Stereo Power Amplifier (http://audio-database.com/MCINTOSH/amp/mc2205-e.html) 1 - McIntosh MC50 - Power Amplifier (https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/31547-mcintosh-mc50/) 1 - McIntosh C28 - Preamplifier (http://www.audioreview.com/cat/amplification/preamplifiers/mcintosh/c28/prd_118328_1591crx.aspx) 1 - McIntosh MR78 - FM Tuner (http://www.audioclassics.com/detail?detail=MR78) 1 - Bang & Olufsen's Beogram 8000 - Turntable (http://beophile.com/?page_id=761) Plenty of homework for anyone interested in owning a classic audio system. I will entertain serious offers after an email request. A proper name and cell phone number will be required for a discussion to commence. Rare that you find all these items intact, with a single owner. More photos available upon request. http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/ele/5243130742.html No Affiliation. I tamed down the CAPS text in the ad. Seems quite high to me, but one owner system is impressive. However, if you are interested for $15K, I could put a similar system together for you.

  28. I honestly tried to talk myself into keeping the XPA-5 when I came across a used UPA-7 but I couldn't tell any difference between the two at extreme levels so the UPA stayed. If I was you, I would call Emotiva and see if they have any refurbished versions of what you are looking for. I am a paying member of the Emotiva club and they are always pushing their refurbished gear.

  29. Firstly, thanks to all for your comments on my inaugural post of me and Maynard's Little Gem. If I missed answering some of you that's on me. Your comments are all appreciated. What is "THE 99%" ? Recently, while showing one of my tube amp builds to my sister, I noticed her eyes glazing over. WHAT!?, NOT INTERESTING?! (I asked) Yup, I found from talking to her that not only did she not know what she was looking at, she really wasn't interested in finding out either.... She's a great gal but,,, REALLY? =/ I then realized that she as well as hoards of disinterested others, make up about 99% of the population. That's a lot of potential converts but as Cartman said in Southpark "How do I reach these kids?!" Since the merits of tubes amps alone aren't enough to impact the 99%. I figured I'd make one that would compel them to take notice and maybe even ask a question or two about it. (Check and Mate!) Enter, the P.T. Barn-Amp. It's as much a spectacle as it is an amp, The 5 channel light show is from XKITZ and is the main feature but I put in some stuff for us 1%'rs too, such as: Through chassis forced air cooling. The chassis holes for the 11BM8's are over-sized and air is forced past them from below. This air flow also cools the interior of the case. Auto soft-start. Upon power up, the orange light illuminates to show the soft-start circuit has engaged.. 15 seconds later, the orange light goes out and the blue one goes on to indicate full heater voltage is being applied. DC power supply for the filaments. Speaks for itself... Overheat indicator Shouldn't ever need it but I had some holes to fill... See below. The chassis is from an old piece of medical test gear. As such, it came with a pretty sweet ac input module with all kinds of filtering and de-spiking, which I left in and put to good use. The amp circuit itself is the popular George Fathauer kit that uses (4) 11BM8's. While I wanted to use a Maynard design, I had a lot to put in the case that wasn't amp, so I chose this one for it's compact footprint. Happily, I also found it to be quite listenable with lots of volume. My only two notes are that there is a small bit of background hum that's not affected by the volume control; small enough, that I haven't even bothered to look for it yet and the bass rolls off sooner than you'd expect it to. The former may just be B+ ripple and the later is probably due to the modest OT's that come in the kit. A number of on-line chats seem to support that notion. No worries though because an equalizer and two Klipsch RB-61's make it sound tasty. As expected, the 0A3's put on a great show in subdued lighting and they even show up in daytime. What I didn't see coming is that even though the 0A3's are from the same batch, they can differ noticeably in the amount of light they put out. What you see in the You-Tube is the best matching I could do with the 0A3's I had on hand. I prefer to use the amp with the Coke bottle gas regulators because,,, COKE BOTTLE GAS REGULATORS!,,, but I am considering retrofitting some 40W Edison bulbs with octal plug bases for insertion directly into the 0A3 sockets. That should satisfy anyone's brightness needs. Lastly, you'll notice some empty real-estate to the right of the light show controls. That area was planned to host VU meters but I ended up needing that space for the light show cpu board, plus as the amp came together, meters seemed superfluous. I guarantee you don't even notice it when this thing gets cranking. Maybe a nice logo could go there. Maybe not... Anyway, that's it. Show it to some 99%'rs and let me know what they say... Next up: A pedigreed Maynard design with built in real time diagnostics, status and waveform monitoring. To be dubbed; The Tech Amp (a Winter project so it'll be a while.) Thanks for looking and have a great Fall y'all, Stu

  30. From one Jim to another, Yamaha is nice and natural with sound,as are Klipsch. I run Yamaha with my Klipsch and have never had any issues with it being to bright. You'll have nice bass response with them and nice clear mids and highs. The speakers will bring out any imperfections in the set up or recordings for audio.

  31. Jim, Welcome to the forum. Urban legend, don't believe it. Revealing, good and bad, yes. The RF-82II's are a rock solid pair of floorstanders. Sure worth a shot. How large is your listening environment? How loud do you like your music? I have never heard the Yamaha A-S500 but I am certain my A-S1000 would rock the 82II's. Bill

  32. If you've got the bucks--that would certainly be interesting to hear. Personally, I'd look at integrating a one of these into a nice box..and perhaps using three of them to tri-amp a pair of Khorns, which would require something like this to do the crossover duties. The price would be about 2/3s of the two monoblocks that you've identified, and the difference in sound quality would be fairly enormous over the stock Khorn. Chris

  38. Thank you. I'll look forward to input on the top mount ATMOS. I saw them but was concerned about the reflecting concept for the higher frequencies. Welcome to the forum glad to see you've put together a great HT setup. Aside from the subs & DAES (Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers)... we have the same speaker combo. Your room is long... at what point in the length of your space (or how far back) is your MLP? Dolby has calculated the best angle for the upward-firing element based on where most people place their floor-mounted tower and stand-mounted speakers and based on standard ceiling heights. Since it includes reflection angle when using upward firing modules, that also would include a recommended position (distance) of your MLP. That distance from your R / C / L front mains could impact what speaker choice you select for Atmos; in-ceiling or DAES.. Same with the height of your rear surround (RS-7), it seems like Jay L has addressed that placement. As far as the upward firing add-on modules (RP-140SA), you actually want the reflection, it is a required function. The higher FR of the RP-140SA conforms to Dolby's patented treble curve & proprietary directivity standards. Reproducing the height plane is vital to Atmos (via ceiling speakers or DAES) but another benefit of note, an Atmos mixed track is not exclusive to (or limited to) just the overhead or height speakers. An Atmos track will change the experience with all your speakers, & that starts all the way back to the authoring process. Since Atmos is Object Based (each object has its own panning path, left-right, right-left, front-back, overhead, etc), the information & content is sent differently than traditional channel based content, And because the content is not channel based, your AVR manages object based audio (via the Dolby Atmos Renderer) to take full advantage of both the number and placement of all your speakers—including your front L / C / R & subs etc.

  40. This has turned into a very informative thread. This is reinforcing my decision on the emo gear... And making me think lower end amps will be sufficient. Although the reference processor is still on my short list. Maybe I'll do the lower end series and run 5 mono blocks for similar cost. Xpa1L or xpa100's across the board.

  42. Agreed - but does seem that XLR balanced is slightly better than RCA (at least in my house I've been trying to figure out where the feedback comes from with ground loops ,etc). Plus it just sounds cooler to use XLR inputs vc RCA :-P

  43. I've been Atmos for almost a year now. And 5.2.4 Atmos with (4) Klipsch RP-140's in place since July. The RP-140SA's work great in my space (16 x 13 x 8). All of the Atmos tracks are distinctly effective & immersive. I'd personally never go back to a non-Atmos configuration. Here's my RF-7 front tower....with the RP-140SA.
