  1. And it is! This is a hobby, not rocket science. A good portion of the enjoyment of the hobby is pride of ownership. And that is based largely upon subjective opinion. And often that means impressing others as much as impressing one's self. And often that means deluding one's self as much as deluding others. Whenever a friend asks me what I think of their audio system, I always answer with, "Do you like it? Yes? Then it's great."

  8. Different mood now. Tough hockey game going on for my team. One of the "UNEXPECTED" "Goings Home" as we'd call it down here. Hearing that way too much lately. RIP Andrew F A FL neighbor was big time into these guys & I only had/have a best of because there were FM stations to cover this type of Alternative Music. This is from the last decade.

  9. Start around the 9:20 mark if all you want to hear is what Nelson has to say about power needs. By the way Klipsch is mentioned. One can argue with the master if one thinks he knows better than him. I have found 5 or 6 watts is the sweat spot for me with a tube amplifier and around 25 watts of SS amplification with my LaScala's. And I do have many 300 watt SS amplifiers to listen with as well.

  10. A second Floyd record is spinning right now, using the grado platinium wood pick up now , it´s better rockin than the goldring which is better for jazz and classical music. Pink Floyd´s " Annimals " 1977 / Columbia Records / Printed in UK

  11. I know ..I'm already quite loopy , there is something I ran across again today , it was like magic. When I was still active DJ we use Stanton cartridges , it was the model 680 EE , they sounded really good . Now I bought a Stanton 681 EEE from a collector , mint condition , not 20 hours of runtime . Since it plays optimally on light tonearms I can now use him on the SME Tonearm.

  15. "......or at least fail to irritate you...." That line says volumes about our differing approaches in equipment. Some seek the Holy Grail and other (me for one) simply want to listen to music with a sound we enjoy. I understand the Grail approach as I've done that in other arenas of my life however Spending time and money to seek incremental improvements just isn't where I want to be. Sure I'd like a step up but there's other things I walk that path. Music for me is a relaxing time occupier that would be ruined if I went down the road of The Grail. I've enough of that elsewhere. That being said I wouldn't mind a Band Camp Amp.

  23. True, but arguing about what other people cannot hear is futile, or hubris. I am willing to comment only on what I can or cannot hear myself. I am sometimes amazed by what others can verifiably hear ... and I have, on rare occasions, been able to similarly amaze others with what I could verifiably hear. Often it boils down to knowing what to listen for.

  24. Ronnie Hawkins did part of the soundtrack of our youth if you were my age or older, 7 in 1970. Musician, Actor and more. He's responsible for putting the Band together. RIP Ronnie! https://citizenfreepress.com/breaking/ronnie-hawkins-passes-away/

  25. Evidently none of us hear the same things. Listened to a fascinating podcast today about how sound becomes hearing. Amazing audio examples in the podcast showing how our brains process hearing and how we hear what we expect to hear.

  28. It was a couple years after that iRobot came out before I knew he helped engineer DSoTM. The intricacies of the keyboards and guitars weaving sounds was common to both. And the imaging that come from each is prevalent on many systems whether they could do it easily or not! Read something I think and while at my friends house pulled out the other and saw Alans name in the credits!

  34. Unless you can at least measure distortion, it is almost impossible to tell, just by listening, how your tubes are "breaking-in". During break-in the tube elements will expand and contract in cycles until a "natural state" (Chief Bone Head used this term, and I think it is accurate) is achieved. This natural state could reduce distortion or increase it depending on how the other tubes in the circuit also break-in. All the tubes (plate curves) will interact with one another in the circuit, add or subtracting distortion. I know a lot of people rely on their ears to hear these differences during break-in and in some cases, it is audible, but most times it is not.

  37. There are 7 billion people living on this planet that is 14 billion ears . Each brain and each ear has its own genetic construction, so it is only logical that each person, as far as it deals with music, has an individual hearing sensation. If two people sit in a HiFi studio and listen to the same music, it does not mean that they perceive the same sounds or feel the same emotions.

  38. I agree about the ILLUSION that occurs with preference of 2nd or 3rd harmonic dominance. The charm is at "ordinary levels" which for me is the industry standard "83 db" average, established by the HT world. All Klipsch owners are listening to MilliWatts, Primarily. All of my speakers except subs are 100 db Plus/watt, those are 97, which prompted a reduction of my subwoofer power amps (Crown K2) to Behringer 800 with LED power indicators, kept right below clipping on my demo HT with bass that shakes the room floor and scares strangers........no joke. I helped setup my old Underground Jubilee Clones with SIT-3 amps with the guy who bought them from me. Closest thing to Triode tubes! As an aside, I'm all for limiting live rock concert levels at 96 db.

  39. TubesGlo pretty much said what I was going to say. Stay within the range recommended by the manufacturer. They probably, should have, done all the research on the proper range of bias for their particular amplifier.

  49. That's a fact. But it's deeper than that. Some people have an agenda or they are selling something. We have had people here that thought wire color and length inside an amp was critically important, and he would repeat the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, because everyone here literally needed saving. If only people would build an amp the way he said, we would truly have high fidelity. Until then, we were all in a fog. Some people are just absolutely convinced there is a conspiracy going on. And yes, some like to argue - the "Will it Fly" thread is a great one.
