  16. Did the doc thingy the other day so took a lil road trip. She's all happy n stuff but I forgot to ask her about my coffee. Needless to say I made a command decision on my own. Think I'll slip out and take the pulse of Duckburg. See how that tornado clean-up is workin out around here. @Invidiosulus nice shot. It's been non stop around here since that tornado the other day. Had a loooong one blocking the entire town for a long time. Now they're trying to catch up. They must have had ALL the sidings from Portsmouth, Ohio (down on the Ohio river) up to lake Erie full and waiting. Yesterday was nuts. Alllll horns all day and not the good kind of horns we listen too. db was about the same though.

  22. I don't think (that low of) distortion is the answer since some of the amplifiers that people like with their speakers are higher than the Adcom at 1 watt.

  25. OK, I just skimmed the entire thread, and did not see the following mentioned anywhere: Look at Figure 8 here. This is a typical distortion characteristic for a class AB amplifier. This happens to be a brute, an Adcom GFA-565, but lower-power class AB amplifiers distort in much the same way -- their distortion curves will just be "slid", in entirety, toward the left side of the graph. The important point is that the distortion at very low power (left end of the graph) is almost 20 dB higher than it is just before clipping (right end of the graph, just before the point where the curves suddenly shoot upward vertically). So if you're connecting your 99 dB sensitive speakers to this amplifier, and it's spending all of its time below 1 Watt, you're experiencing about 20 dB more harmonic distortion than if you used a low-power amplifier with just enough headroom to handle transients. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Unfortunately, that even applies to too much power.

  26. It’s ok, some people want quantity over quality, and that’s certainly the theme for you. I could never live with a crown amp. Call me an audio snob if you will, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

  28. Posted this yesterday over in vinyl record spinning. Sad day for sure. Well I was shocked yet not shocked when I heard of Richard Betts death from cancer earlier today. That guy was something else. He played anything handed to him and his fretwork was amazing. Quiet yet always came up with something funny if you knew that grin of his. Ramblin Man? He flat nailed it everytime I ever saw him play it. It was just the way he rolled like the rest of the guys. Southern rock? The Allman Brothers were the words that rolled off so many tongues. It's just another sad day. Ugh Forrest Richard Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) was an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. Early in his career, he collaborated with Duane Allman,[1] introducing melodic twin guitar harmony and counterpoint which "rewrote the rules for how two rock guitarists can work together, completely scrapping the traditional rhythm/lead roles to stand toe to toe".[2] Following Allman's death in 1971, Betts assumed sole lead guitar duties during the peak of the group's commercial success in the mid-1970s. Betts was the writer and singer on the Allmans' hit single "Ramblin' Man". He also gained renown for composing instrumentals, with one appearing on most of the group's albums, including "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Jessica" (which was later used as the theme to Top Gear). The band went through a hiatus in the late 1970s, during which time Betts, like many of the other band members, pursued a solo career and side projects under such names as Great Southern and The Dickey Betts Band. The Allman Brothers reformed in 1979, with Dan Toler taking the second guitar role alongside Betts. In 1982, they broke up a second time, during which time Betts formed the group Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks, which lasted until 1984. A third reformation occurred in 1989, with Warren Haynes now joining Betts on guitar. After Betts was ousted from the band in 2000 over a conflict regarding his continued drug and alcohol use; he never played with them again nor appeared with other former band members for reunions or side projects. With the death of Betts in April 2024, Jaimoe is the last living founder of the Allman Brothers Band. He was inducted with the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995[3] and also won a best rock performance Grammy Award with the band for "Jessica" in 1996.[4] Betts was ranked No. 58 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2003, and No. 61 on the list published in 2011. His first solo lp from 1974 went down and cranked big time this afternoon. Ya think he couldn't do it all? Riiiiight, not a big hit but one of my favs. Here ya go @JohnJ. Put your feet up. God's speed brother! RIP!

  29. Low power will clip earlier when paired with the wrong loudspeaker. With 104 db speakers you will never clip an 8 watt amp at any level you could withstand for any amount of time. It's all about pairing the right amplifier with the right speaker. If you don't get that part right, all bets are off.

  31. We had a golden retriever who didn't want to sleep inside when he was little, so he ended up being mostly an outdoor dog. He was on a pretty long cable run and had one of those igloo style dog houses. One evening after it was dark I went out to love on him and put more water out. Right as I turned back to the house a Barred Owl was gliding right over me . He had a good 4.5 ft wingspan, and nary a sound as he went past. To say the least, it startled me. We rarely saw them, but heard them often in the summer.

  34. I'm trying to get into this. The whole planet goes crazy except for the US so there must be something to it. But watching games that go for 90 minutes and end up as a tie makes me feel like I've just wasted 90 minutes They need to make the goal net bigger or something, so that the poor guys can score once in a awhile. Anyway, I was wondering, does anybody know why there is a team for England, and not Great Britain, like they do it in the Olympics?

  39. I've made a little headway in my TV search. I think I want to go with a 40" Sony LCD set. I don't need 240 Hz, 120 is fine, and 1080p is mandatory. Internet streaming would be nice. I've looked at various sites like Consumer Reports, Cnet, Crutchfield, and Amazon. I'm a little confused by all of Sony's different model numbers and "series" for what seems like the same thing in some cases, but often with huge price differences. If someone is familiar with how they name their stuff I would appreciate a little insight. There are a bunch of different XBR sets ranging in numbers from 3 to 10. Are the highest numbers the newest models or do they make some of them yearly and update them with new technology when needed? Then there are S, V, W, and Z "series" models? I just want to make sure I don't buy an old design if newer stuff is available, but I can't find anything at Sony or any of those other sites that explain it.

  40. If it's around 40#, I would not trust it to a center stand. That could be knocked around pretty easily. Wall mount or screw down would be needed. With cats, if there's a way to screw something up, they will definitely find it before you do.

  41. Are these things pretty solid? What would a 40" set weigh? I'm wondering whether I need to make it 'cat proof?' .
