Opinions on La Scala upgrades for home theater use

Stop calling those upgrades because thery aren't update is a better term. If you want a true upgrade in performance you want DeanG's or ALK networks. If you change the tweeter it will alter that Klipsch sound. Been there, done that. I run a trio of La Scala's up front with Cornwall's and Heresy HIP's in the rear. I have scaled down over the years had four Klipschorn's, a La Scala and Belle's at one point. -
All speakers require a subwoofer or subwoofers to cover the bottom two octaves.

The kit to the III is designed for the Heresy II with the square input panel you will have to cut the hole out in the back to use the HIII kit on the round input HII. I wouldn't. The gains are not that substantial. I would replace any caps with high quality film and foil not another electrolytic.

3 Phenolic Tweeter Diaphragms from Forte I and Academy - $15 Ea.

Far smoother sounding than the metallized titanium that people think they are upgrading to. Uggghhh -
The standard E network won't run all the driver's wide open like the HIE network though I assume that is your intent. I am not getting the trim anodized it must have come that way from the factory because it is a ***** to sand off to get to the raw aluminum. Your build is coming along nicely.

Those look so nice and clean and very well maintained.
-
I found out the metal trim must have an anodized coating. I am reworking my trim pieces now but it is a slow going tedious process. I start with around 120 grit, then 220, then 340, then 600 and 1000 and finish with Simichrome metal polish. It will gleem when I am done with it. Really nice work on that build! My HIP's have the K-700 horns with the 8 mounting holes must be to secure them tighter to the motorboard.
-
Just more foreign made crap unfortunately. I stick with PWK designs period.
-
Where did you have that done. I was going to progressively sand all the pieces up to about 2000 grit then polish with simichrome. I did this process to some car amplifiers I had and it came out nice but it is an awful amount of work. At least this time I don't have to sand past the anodizing.

Try the Klipsch Owners Group page on Facebook many of the top level Klipsch guys are on there contributing daily and may be able to assist. Trey Cannon comes to mind.

He did offer them on Garage Sale and got hammered and bailed. 🙂

Duracrest Fabrics - Cornwall Grill Cloth Replacement
Frzninvt replied to jortron's topic in Technical/Restorations
I believe Duracrest got their inventory from Wendell Fabrics try contacting them. I asked for some samples and they had a good variety of options. -
I would go with the deeper bass extension and height of the Fotre' III's personally as you have a large room to fill. You may have to jump up to Cornwall IV's for a room that size.

Adding a Heresy as a Center Speaker to My La Scala's
Frzninvt replied to HonestDave's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
The correct way to do it is build a copy of PWK's derived center channel box if you don't have a dedicated center channel output. There used to be plans on the forum somewhere. I would not receommend it because some amplifiers don't like it but I have used the + from one channel and - from the other channel to create a center channel output. -
Small water damage! Hah! More like trashed. $75 tops for that garbage.

Yeah, that idea worked, NOT!

The Forte' was never offered in raw birch.

Magnetic shielding is irrelevant these days with flat screen TV's as it only impacted CRT TV's of old.

You just went down the rabbit hole. You need to get a better matching center to the Heresy's then anything Reference. A KG 2.2 or 2.5 would work as would a KV-2, KV-3 not ideal but better than reference. An Academy would be a fabulous choice and obviously a third Heresy would be the coup de gras'.
