  1. What circuit do you plan to use it in?
  2. Years ago a bunch of us sailors paid a bar band not to play; they sucked, and we wanted to sit and talk. They were happy, we were happy, and it didn't matter if they used tubes or solid state.
  3. I'm not disagreeing with powering up the voltage slowly on an older piece of tube equipment. Someone asking how to bring up a used piece of equipment likely isn't going to have a variac, ammeter, and schematic at their disposal. The Reference 3 is 10-11yr old preamp with tubes, microprocessor driven display and volume controls, and draws 125 watts . Current draw should be an amp after the tubes warm up, slightly more with a lower line voltage.
  4. I'm of the opinion that if a cap needs to be reformed, it should be replaced. Capacitors are cheap, especially when compared to replacing a power transformer. Your ears will tell you if your new equipment has a hum in it.
  5. I'm getting real interested in building this. I have a pair of Hammond 1615 5Kct to 4,8,16ohm 15watt transformers from a Glass Audio Single 45 Amp I made back in the 90s. The power transformer opened up once, and after replacing it a few years later it developed a hum. I'm done with it and want to make something new. I was looking at the Moondog 2A3 monoblock schematic but the tube price turns me off. Being able to reuse some of the parts from the 45 amp is a plus here.
  6. +1 on the foil inductor mounting. I've never done it, but the first thing that popped into my head was using a fly cutter, then a chisel, then RTV, what a mess that would have been. Dean, yours look elegant.
  7. I took a pair of '89 Heresy IIs with me on a destroyer in '97-'98 when I was finishing soldering my Glass Audio 45 amp together. Eleven years at sea on five ships cured me of wanting anything to do with having a boat of my own.
  8. Could you post a picture of the fuse cap, preferably on top of a steel ruler? Someone may a spare or have one in a parts bin on the workbench.

Beautiful speakers. I plan to do the same upgrades to my '67 Khorns. Nice work.
  10. Three decades ago I was the envy of my friends when I had four Bose 901s. I even hung them from chains at both ends of the living room. Good times listening to music videos on Sony Beta tapes. But I realized I was missing bass, then I wondered where the treble was. I realized there was no magic in those 901s, that 9 midrange drivers only produced midrange sound. So next came 2 LaScalas, 5 Heresys, an Academy, and finally 1967 Khorns. My ears were the persuasion to Buy Other Sound Equipment.
  11. Hi Brac, I compared the drawing with the picture and everything looks like its going where it should. Did you try any resistance checks on it? 1 to 3, 1 to 5, 1 to 7, and 2 to 4 should be zero ohms. Try comparing resistance readings on the bad crossover to the good one. I've installed terminals (in a hurry at work) where I crimped over the wire insulation and didn't get a connection. At home I strip the wire, flux it and the inside of the connector, crimp with a MIL-Std crimping tool, then solder the connector. How's that Academy sounding? I wear the Klipsch shirt you sent me occasionally. Last year I moved from Colo Springs to Little Rock, 74 miles from Bob Crites and 115 miles from Hope, though I have yet to visit either. Let us know what you find on the crossover.
  12. Your profile shows Super AA, did you find one of your Type A crossovers was the problem that caused the buzzing?
  13. Did you test the 9V battery first to see if it is good?
  14. I have a wife with an Imelda Marcos syndrome. Your excuse?
  15. I'm sorry. That Fender amp just reminds me of a purse.
  16. WOW. The way the urine completely destroyed the crossovers is disturbing. Both speakers became hazardous material areas because someone either didn't know their worth or didn't care. I wouldn't care to bring them inside - ever. I'd vote to scrap them both, maybe worth a hundred bucks for the K400s - if someone else pulled them and washed them. I had mice in my project truck in the garage, every time I worked on it I had to stop due to coughing and wheezing from the waste. Rodent waste is nothing to mess around with.
  17. An old Tripp Lite Isobar, mostly because it has 8 outlets on it. 4 components have been plugged into it since 1991.
  18. Bill, that looks like you're all set up and ready to listen to music.
  19. Nice preamp there. I've been following your upcoming Belle build. I've been looking for a center channel for my Khorns for several years. An Academy didn't do it for me, and the La Scalas I had were weak in the bass area, so I've got a K400 waiting and am trying to decide on a Belle or a Cornscala. Please keep us updated on the construction. Dave in west Little Rock
  20. You can make your own with a LM317T regulator. Adjustable from 1.2 to 37 volts at 1.5amps. It'll need a heatsink.
  21. How much does the Heresy III upgrade kit cost? Does Klipsch ask for the old Heresy II parts to be returned?
  22. I use a 4PDT toggle switch to go between my Khorns and two amps.
  23. Welcome to the forum. Your Khorns are beautiful. I also have a pair of 1966 Khorns, K-C-WRs I bought 26 yrs ago from the original owner who was on her way to a nursing home. They'll likely leave my possession under the same circumstances.
  24. I used Monster Cable for my 1987 LS-FB La Scalas which I sold about 1992. I didn't notice a bit of difference between the Monster Cable and 3rd world Asian lamp cord that I had been using when I first bought them. I gave the Monster Cable to the La Scala's new owners who were overjoyed with receiving it. It had a thick clear insulation which showed how the copper inside had turned green, and I was happy to get it out of the house.
  25. Limited range maybe, but some are just as passionate about their sound and components. A luthier friend of mine searches for vintage parts when building a copy of a particular musician's guitar, even going to the point of getting vintage wire between pickup, tone controls, and jack. You should have seen the look he shot me when I suggested he consider recapping a vintage amp in the interest of its longevity.
