  1. OS can play a role too. I had issues of varying degress with my iPad control device when server was running on windows 10 or server 2016. I tried both full roon and the standalone server version with mild success. the best performance came when server was running on a linux vm or docker. this was pre-v2.0, however. I don't recall having many issues since their latest overhaul, but I also haven't used roon as much this year as I would have liked.
  2. So, I think I'm switching to Plex/Plexamp for my music playback. There is nothing wrong with Roon and it's the superior product right now, but I just can't keep justifying the cost. I don't use Tidal or Qobuz and I handle all of my music tagging/metadata through Beets, so it's an absolute premium for a pretty UI and playback of my own music files. I looked at plexamp when it was first released and was unimpressed. It has certainly evolved over the last couple of years, enough that I feel comfortable using it instead at least. It's still lacking in the couch experience as it relates to controlling a running plexamp instance on a dedicated PC using an iOS device, but that's on the roadmap to improve. Casting to an Airplay or Chromecast device is supported, however, if I can't be bothered to get up and change the music like the old days. I already pay for a Plex pass and use it exclusively for movies and much of my TV content, so it makes sense to just extend that to music as well. It's about 75-80% of what Roon offers, but it's also not $700 or more for simply existing on my network. Just an FYI for those out there looking to find something between foobar and Roon.
  3. Lazy Sunday.. haven't been spending much time with the camera this year, but still try to take periodic photos of the girls and catalog their evolution. Here's Adelaide, age 9.5.
  4. Yeah, tell us about the tractor now.
  5. I've been eyeballing this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07HYWDS7D/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
  6. I got two from Rudy81 a couple of years ago. He was asking for $200 total to cover the cost of the drivers. Fortunately he's just across town from me and I snatched them up as an ice storm was rolling through. So that's certainly a place to start - then it's up to you if want to be compensated for the plywood and effort of building it (he, apparently, did not).
  7. That's probably the one big roadblock - finding one used and affordable. The spdif to aes works fine for me as well with a standard monoprice rca to XLR cable.
  8. My yamaha sp2060 unit runs at 24/96, for what it's worth. And has digital aes inputs. And you can still find and run the software to remotely configure over ethernet.
  9. My youngest just turned 7! And the 9 year old..
  10. Ah fair enough, thanks for the additional clarity around what you're trying to accomplish.
  11. Lookup pictures of the different models and see what outputs are on the back? The node 2i appears to have a dedicated sub output, for instance.
  12. I received this email from ESS this afternoon and likely so did @Chris A, @Rudy81, @Pete H, and others. Hopefully this becomes a long term viable option for enthusiasts..
  13. Both cases cleared up with treatment, so that's good.
  14. They've had to learn about life and death early on, respect for the natural world, work ethic, and consequences for skipping responsibility. They've seen the byproduct of hard work and tasted food fresh from our soil. They've had to care for animals and either watch them be sold for someone else to enjoy or helped butcher and eat the animal themselves. They have immense freedom and roam the pasture and woods often. Many mornings they'll wake up before us and just go hang out with the goats and other livestock. They know how to use a staff twice their height and get animals from the pasture to the barn. They're 7 and 9. There's also studies which show possible immune system boosts and reduction of risk for asthma by being in and around barns and livestock, etc. (And they were breastfed till just after 1yr). This didn't happen by chance, however. My wife and I lived in the suburbs and consciously decided to move out here and have this environment for our kids to grow up in and it's taken a great deal of effort and sacrifice to get here. So I very much agree with earlier sentiments that the attitudes and behaviors are a result of the parents. They still have tablets and electronics, sure, but their use of such things pales in comparison to everything else which fills their days.
  15. every kid should grow up on a farm. i wish i had. so now we're making up for lost time..
  16. He just posted ~1hr ago, for what it's worth.
  17. As far as headphone systems go, it's a really solid piece. I haven't integrated it into my main stereo system yet (it and my headphones are currently at the office so I can use them more), but I anticipate it working quite well as a dac/preamp.
  18. I have the Yamaha SP2060, but as Chris mentioned above they can be hard to find and somewhat expensive when you do. I tripped and fell into a good deal on mine.
  19. Good stuff Ron, thanks for sharing.
