jimjimbo
I only have one request....PLEASE do not turn this into a "discussion" about 9/11. I am only posting these photos here for those that have not or could not see this site. My wife and I drove from our home in Indiana to visit my family in New Jersey for Thanksgiving. A little more than halfway there, the Flight 93 National Memorial is about 20 minutes off the main highway, close to Shanksville, PA. We arrived quite early in the morning, and were the only folks on the site. The memorial is very simple with an overlook, a visitors center, and the actual crash site that is marked by a large sandstone boulder. At the site, visitors leave all kinds of items as a kind of personal memorial I suppose. It is a very solemn and humbling experience, to say the least.
BigStewMan
thanks for sharing that Jim, somber place I'm sure. I remember visiting Pearl Harbor once and trying to wrap my head around the events that took place on that very spot i was standing...i give it a dozen posts before the proverbial, "this isn't about 9-11; but ..."
Zen Traveler
give it a dozen posts before the proverbial, "this isn't about 9-11; but ..." What? I'm sorry but I think that is a profound example of 9/11 and I appreciate Jim sharing his experience and photos. There is nothing like going to a place where something happened that will be etched in your memory forever...My wife and I visited Dachau and mere words can't explain the sensation of being there. All of a sudden it's not just a footnote in a history book but a moment in time that you share with humanity...

Moderators dtel's wife Posted December 1, 2015 Moderators Share Posted December 1, 2015 Thank you Jim. I sincerely appreciate you posting the pictures. Same way I felt when we visited the memorials in D.C. Christy
RT FAN
Thanks for taking the time to visit the memorial & posting these photos. It reminds me of the Vietnam memorial in D.C. in it's deliberate simplicity. The WTC memorial, which I live across the street from, is moving as well. I have walked by it, but haven't forced myself to linger and look for the names of the people I knew who perished that day.
DizRotus
Thank you Jim. I'll make a point of seeing it next time in the area. The courage of those who thwarted the plans of the hijackers is inspiring. Given the situation faced by the brave passengers, bringing the plane down in that empty field was the selfless decision. Untold lives were spared at the hijackers' intended target, possibly the White House or some other target.
jimjimbo
I will say that it was difficult to linger very long at the visitors center, where all of the events of the day were presented in great detail with accompanying video, pieces of the aircraft, etc. I felt almost not worthy of being there, knowing what transpired aboard the aircraft and the heroism of the passengers. I am glad that we went to pay our respects.
