Fjd
I have a MA5002 (if anyone needs 1.3KW at 8Ω) And an XLS5000 (1.1KW at 8Ω) I've read that in the 1970s PWK was using a BGW 100. I've got a potential need for an amplifier with a headphone monitoring jack that takes up one rack space and read where you most likely have experience with the following amplifiers and I was hoping to get your views regarding each one. BGW 100 AB International 200 Crown D-75 or D-75A
The Dude
I wouldn't mind checking out the ab international. As for the crown d45, i think it firs your bill. I ne rack space and headphone jsck. If you need more watts go with the d75a. Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

djk
"BGW 100 AB International 200 Crown D-75 or D-75A" They're all good, I've got a BGW 100 and an AB International 200 on hand right now. I prefer the BGW to the Crown (as did PWK), but the AB may be even a bit better. Edited January 26, 2016 by djk
The Dude
BGW 100 There is a few of those around on the bay. Are they easier to repair? By easier lets say that McIntosh MC2100 are fairly easy for comparison. AB International 200 Whats your thought on the 600 from the Precedent series? SWL
I posted about this in the "insane amplification" thread, but is also appropriate here. For anyone that has ever wondered about the DC-300A Series II: QH.....when you lived in Milwaukee, you wouldn't happen to be the guy that I bought my KLF-30's from about 6-7 years ago in Muskego? That Crown amp looks exactly how I remember it when he demoed them for me. He offered to sell me the amp as well....kinda wish I had taken him up on that offer....Those big blue cans are not easy to forget.
Quiet_Hollow
What is the first selection that you played in the video? I didn't recognize it. "Aurora and the Fawn" and "Welcome to the Moors" both from James Newton Howard's Maleficent OST. The last track was "Transient" from Orbital's Blue Album. QH.....when you lived in Milwaukee, you wouldn't happen to be the guy that I bought my KLF-30's from about 6-7 years ago in Muskego? ..Those big blue cans are not easy to forget. Mmm...That wasn't me. The only speakers I sold when I lived in Wisconsin were my set of Yamaha. I was living just east of Franklin at the time. I hear you on the look of those Mallory caps. Suckers are huge. The power supply being rated at 1KW, continuous duty.
Pete H
Could the signal from the blueray player be low causing the DAC to not put out what it should ? It's connected with an optical cable to the DAC. I don't think so..... unless I'm misunderstanding something its digital at that interface. Thanks, I think I might try the Cleanbox just to see what happens. Did you end up trying this yet? I might be having the same issue with the signal coming from my Marantz and Sansui signals that I'm running to an inuke and SA230 amps and then to subs. I have the Marantz at +12 and the gain all the way up on the inuke to the SPUD and out of the Sansui to the 230 and an F-20 and the gain is set about 3/4 of the way on that amp also. For anyone that has ever wondered about the DC-300A Series II: I guess I'm going to have to clean up the DC-300A that I picked up at a estate sale for $2 and give it a whirl Mark
tromprof
Also picked up a very nice D75A ($60 plus shipping). These are really nice sounding amps and the used prices are killer. I am looking forward to having a bit more time to AB the PS200, D75a, and my Pioneer D3 amps. In casual listening the PS200 really made the QP bass bins shine, but I was noticing the mids sounding a little lacking, but again no AB so... I did order a Cleanbox but found I didn't need it and it added some unacceptable noise. Without it the Crowns are dead quiet. Thanks guys, this is an informative thread!

Thanks guys, this is an informative thread! These threads always seem to lead me down the path to spending more money; however, there sure seems to be a lot of bang-for-the-buck out there. Not that I really need any more amplifiers; however, I went shopping anyway and found a BGW 100B for $40, an AB International Series 200 for $75 and a Crown D75 for $85. I would like to track down a parts list and schematic for the BGW 100B. Here are a few glamour shots and a little amp porn of the BGW 100B. . Not yet, Coytee is looking for his, if he can't find it I will probably just order one, it sure looks like it would solve that gain problem. These are really nice sounding amps and the used prices are killer. When I was trying to figure out what 2 amps I was going to use JC told me about the D 75's and how they sound and the price was great. I found a pair on Ebay for like $140, got a third one for something else later. The are very quiet at the speaker, I say it like that because one has a slight hum but it's at the amp, not the speaker. It's used on the 402 horns, being that efficient if it had a hum you would hear it through that speaker.
jwc
dtel.....no doubt......can't beat the crown D-45 and D-75A series for the money. Can do XLR to when needed. Not a lot of power....but on high efficiency speakers....not an issue.

Smoking good prices. I seen there are a couple different series of the BGW 100. Any idea what the difference is? Some even had different faces. I don't know what the difference is between the BGW 100 and 100B. I haven't found much online about the amps but did find a couple of references where PWK was using one in the 1970s. I'm hoping djk visits the thread again and provides some insight. The amp looks to be from the late 1970s though, as it is full of the old carbon comp resistors. I'm sure some of them have drifted out of spec. I haven't taken any pictures of the Crown D75 yet since I still need to pick it up from my Dad. However, I wanted the older style D75 for the speaker binding posts instead of the screws and the separate inputs for balanced and unbalanced. Here are a couple of pictures from the internet of the style of Crown D75 that I bought. One of the reasons that I was looking for a single rack space amplifier with the headphone jack, my girlfriend got me one of these producer stations with a bunch of rack spaces for my office area. It is morphing into a multipurpose set up for when I need to work at my day job, along with my headphone tube amp setup, and I'm thinking of adding a station to try my hand at ChrisA's thread for un-mastering music with Audacity using my AKG K712 mastering headphones, along with one of these single rack space amps. .
