etc6849
Try this track for a demo, just found it tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK5Z2FkEuGg Some serious dynamic range on this CD: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/84669 I have found the same results. CD layer----barely noticeable SACD stereo----noticeable SACD 5.1----very clear Funny that CD/SACD and particularly that song is at the top of my demo sources. Islander
On the Flaming Lips song All We Have Is Now, there's a low-level voice speaking a few times. It can be hard to hear, so I use that as a test when I make a change to the system, to see if the change has allowed the system to retrieve a bit more detail from the recording.

DizRotus
I have not heard it. Where in the track is it heard? See post #1. Thanks Carl. I must have thought that was a reference to the time of night. ;-) I'll try again.
willland
I played the 5.1 SACD layer today on my main system again today and that voice seems clearer and louder than ever before. Again stereo SACD layer a tiny bit less noticeable and CD layer barely noticeable. Bill
babadono
Was this at 110dB SPL?
babadono
I know one thing weird, I was listening to that CD last night also.... Must listen again now for the voice.
NBPK402
Was this at 110dB SPL? We also heard it at around 90db levels... in 5.1. Once you know where it is, you can hear it at lower levels too. Edited January 22, 2016 by ellisr63
cincymat
Now here's a challenge. Try not to hear the voice every time you listen to Ride Across the River.....
Krispy Kirk
You guys like hearing random mutterings under music? Just put on a Keith Jarrett album...any Keith Jarrett album. Dude sings, scats, hums, mumbles and makes more rude noises than a Tourette's patient. Nice piano player though. For years, my personal test of low level bass detail was the 1990 CD reissue of Sonny Boy Williamson II's "Keep It To Ourselves". It's an intimate and well-recorded 1963 studio date featuring Matt "Guitar" Murphy and SBW absolutely cooks all through it. One of the tracks features a rather obvious truck or bus pulling up to a stop outside (or under?) the studio as the tape is rolling and then driving off. You can't hear it on mini-monitors or bookshelf speakers. But through big Klipsch floorstanders, it'll make you get up to see if what the UPS man has left on your front porch!
