  1. Up since 6 am and working on the fourth cup of joe . . . Mom and the wife having out later to the Holy Shrines of Wallyworld and the Dollar Tree . . . And Petsmart ((May God forbid we neglect getting gifts for the dogs at Christmas!). I guess I will just have to throw the four dogs out of the house and crank up 'da noise! I asked my mom why her two little dogs get better Christmas gifts now than I ever got as a kid. I asked, "Was it because we were poor?" She answered, "No, no. I just like the dogs better!"

  3. Mornin' guys. Missed all the plumbing and booze posts yesterday. Finished some work and some decorating with my better half and then off to the Xmas light display at the Botanic Gardens here in Denver. Spectacular. We grabbed dinner and then came home and crashed. That's about as exciting as it gets these days and we're good with that. Old age, ya know. Getting some snow in Denver metro this a.m. but it's not expected to amount to much. Life is good. Cheers to all.

  6. 52 and climbing in the cave. Digging out the tree goodies and my heater priority one this morning. Dam, still have NO bacon, spaced that yesterday. Experimenting with the Grind of the Dickinsons Blend, today finely ground, a tad Ampy i would say. I need at least two more cups to see the color bands on these critters, CC i suppose is expecting me to send the RIGHT ones after all...

  7. Ever wake up in the morning and think about the purchases you made the previous day? I generally feel like I use to when I would wake up from a night of merriment and remember the types of things I had done. They always seemed so appropriate when I did them, but in the morning left me with a sinking feeling. Audio buying leaves me feeling the same way.

  8. Morning folks, second cup poured. I need to run to Lowes, grocery store and get my beer kegged before noon. It will be close I might not make it. Ugh I hate thinking of dinner ideas. Everyone else is picky but yet they want the ideas to come from me.

  12. this elderly couple at my church were about to toss some pristine macintosh mc30 mono block amps…my brother stops them. I may buy them (i don’t want to take advantage but since i’ll have to pay several hundred refurbishing them--hopefully i can come up with a price that will make both of us happy).

  16. Mark- I thank Neil Young for promoting an alternative to compressed digital audio. While I enjoy some Neil Young music, it's not something I listen to on a regular basis. The Neil Young demo included with the Pono player is the least impressive high resolution track I own. It's the last track I'd use to show off Pono to others. The Pono player, though not inexpensive, is much less costly than similar digital players. The following YouTube link to a 14 minute review of a Pono player expresses impressions similar to my own. IMO, portability is not the most important attribute of Pono. If I want music on the go, whether jogging, riding in a car, etc., the SQ offered by mp3s is more than adequate. If I'm settling in for relaxed critical 2-channel listening, the Pono player provides SQ that, to me, is unavailable from vinyl, mp3s or streaming. I thank Neil Young for championing an affordable high resolution digital alternative to compressed digital audio. Apparently, it takes a musician to send a message to the music industry regarding the unacceptable quality of the mass market digital recordings.

  17. I feel some guilt after going to Amazon Marketplace shopping for BDs (music)/multi-channel SACDs/DVD-As, etc. since I usually don't have a very good plan for acquiring music...other than "I need more...wow that looks good...let's buy that...". I need a plan for buying discs. Not planning and prioritizing audio-related hardware purchases can get expensive and leave one with a garage full of unused gear, I'm afraid. Prioritizing and watching for good buying opportunities usually gives me the feeling of justification in my forbearance in hardware acquisitions as a virtuous activity (...somehow, that doesn't quite look so virtuous when I see it in print...but you know what I mean... ) I've found that it's good to have a plan and reasons/criteria for the more expensive stuff. I always look around for the weakest link in my setup (I've always concentrated on my main setup when buying) then drill down, considering less obvious other factors until I feel that I've found rational alternative courses of action to pursue--which actually makes me feel somehow justified. However...I'm sure that my friends question my rationality... I'm now reusing some of my earlier hardware in my main setup now that I've got more time to devote to measuring and tweaking everything. The aural results have been much greater than my initial expectations (a change for the better).

  18. Dunno that I have anything constructive to add to this thread as I don't drink coffee. I do however, have a cat. I also have wires and, I have some coffee mugs (almost 90) that my wife is going to fill with goodies and I'm going to give them to my co-workers for Christmas. Hopefully they will be coffee people. The purpose is to keep "me" in front of them at all times (perhaps short of a naked picture of me ) Note that the cat is on the wires which validates the picture (I'll add that it wasn't posed.... wires were sitting there and he comes up and as you cat people know......plopped down as though he owned the place) In fact, Carrot's (also sometimes called Manson for all the rabbit, squirrel murders he's done or, sometimes called Alfred for his Hitchcock type, double chin) Anyways, his favorite place to be is on top of my desk.....ONLY when I'm sitting there. He just lives to get in the way on the desk. Gotta love cats.

  22. short and simple answer is it supports meta data, so when / if I decide to go to a new player I will never have to go to a folder with 5000 songs labled as UNKNOWN again......................it will make finding the music I have easier.......... J-River is allowing me to update and tag every lp I have while listening, surfing the web, typing this message. In fact it is converting 400 files as i type

  27. To cut to the chase, it's amazing. It's everything I hoped for and more. With more time to experience it, my enthusiasm is likely to grow even further. The sense of openness is marvelous. The dynamic range renders the quiet passages easily discernible, with the loud passages powerful and clear. The best way I can describe it is to compare it to the best of good vinyl without any surface noise. The silences between cuts are deafening. By surface noise, I'm not just referring to the unavoidable ticks and pops with vinyl, but the omnipresent surface noise generated by dragging a semi-precious stone across wavy plastic. Even the most pristine vinyl has surface noise. High resolution digital files do not. So far, my time and available musical selections have been limited. I have compared vinyl, mp3 and high resolution versions of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Dave Brubeck's Time Out. Naturally, the vinyl is better than mp3, but Pono is better than both. The bass is tighter with the Pono, and there is no acoustic feedback that undermines even the best turntable. Percussion, as reproduced by the Pono player, pours from my current single driver/tapped horns system with palpable attack and lifelike decay. If you haven't already visited the HDTracks site (http://www.hdtracks.com/), I highly recommend it. The free sampler is a generous assortment of music that highlights the digital format. The only official Pono music I own at this point is Kind of Blue, Michael Jackson's Billie Jean (single), Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Neil Young's There's A World (single), the sample included on the Pono player. After the admittedly limited listening time, it appears to me that the HDTracks (Brubeck and the sampler) sound as good as the music downloaded from the Pono Music Store. Imaging is superb. Female vocals from the HDTracks sampler place the vocalist in the 3 dimensional space between the speakers. I neglected to mention that all of the foregoing listening was done in 2 channel; no center or surrounds. Good vinyl is great, but great digital is better. IMO, excellent recordings of excellent performances sound great despite being on vinyl, not because of it. Neil Young's Pono player finally delivers what digital has promised for decades. Nevertheless, many great recordings are only available on vinyl. I'll still haunt used record shops looking for hidden treasures. After cleaning them with the Reg Williamson record cleaning system (see https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/145942-the-best-way-to-clean-preserve-vinyl/ ) I'll then rip them to FLAC files for use with Pono. Thank you Neil Young.

  28. It's worth also noting that I would have figured out some way to up the ante for this guy a bit. I didn't have intentions of settling at $50 for them. (This forum's taught me a bit more about being appreciative on good deals, not just simply taking advantage of them). But still...that was sad. Good luck on that sale Stew. I'm not as fine tuned on mono amps, but I've seen what they tend to go for!

  29. sometimes at the store, i have to bring a product over to the reading glass section so i can put on some glasses and read the label. one time, i was walking through a casino in Vegas and saw this $1 table that nobody was at. I thought that it was weird and sat down … soon found out that it was a $100 table--that’s the day i realized that i need reading glasses.

  31. Where's that picture you posted? You know, you can get 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 compression washers if you need to bush down correct? Normally the drain piece that goes in the bottom of the sink comes with the faucet. Did you get a new faucet? Not a new faucet...came with the set. Looks new. This drain kit was separate. I like gin also. Have you ever tried New Amsterdam? Haven't tried it. Will have to give it a try sometime.

  33. Scott was a nice guy and a man of his word and held the speakers for me. He was offered more and even had someone try to badmouth me, when he said he was holding them for the first caller. They said something like: "Oh, is that the guy from IL, he will flake on the deal" or some other idiotic thing. Some people have no manners. Also, I am a bit curious to know how he knew I was from IL. So, I am the proud owner of the Ultra II set. The subs were in the original boxes, so they took up a lot of space. However, I still managed to fit them all in a Prius V. I am busy for the next couple of weeks, so I don't know when I will get things setup. To properly set them up, I will need to build a theater room in the basement, that won't happen for a little while.

  37. I have looked at the EVDH1a docs but i see no mention of the phase plug size... How do I find that out? Why do you need to know? The Voice Coil/Diaphragm is 3" feeding a 1.5 in exit on the phase plug which feeds a conial expansion to 2" to feed your JBL horns.

  38. One of the clear indicators of a good, sound product (pun intended) is the existence of competition within a short period after introduction. Apple is the innovator of the smart phone (the iPad was designed before the iPhone, but released after deep market penetration on the part of Apple's original iPhone). They no longer have the largest piece of the pie but continue to have faithful followers despite the competitors with more "open" systems. Methinks something similar will happen with the PONO in terms of battery operated storage and playback of industry standard formats in the digital world. If the DAC is that good, why not use it with a laptop running JRiver with an AC power supply, then unplug it for the road? Just a thought.

  40. Honestly, no but I do not make impulse decisions. (I remember asking a question in the garage sale section and getting 6 or 7 PM's from the seller pushing me to make an immidiate deal, I ran away from that one). But I did not say that I do not make quick decisions. If it is something that I need or want and it pops up, I am on it quickly with cash in hand. Funny that you post this this time of the year because between Thanksgiving and New Years I always buy a bunch of power tools because of the sales. I was on the internet helping my wife look for stuff for her sewing hobby and I had the feeling to jump on Amazon rigth away. Told her I had to look and there was a Dewalt laser lever with all discounts for $100, 85% sold out in 10 minutes. I did the research in about 5 minutes and put it in the cart, spent 5 more minutes checking it out and then bought it. It was 100% sold out a few minutes later. Wanted to buy one last year for about $180. Always got to be ready to jump.

  46. Since I'm a guest at the Klipsch Forums, I hate to suggest other-than-Klipsch products. Klipsch makes a high quality product, furniture grade, and the resale value for their gear is excellent. If you are saying you want to DIY then I don't feel like I'm steering business away from our hosts; I have a couple of solid recommendations. I suggest you try DIYsoundgroup for your sub. They (actually it's a guy, Erich) sell DIY kits at NO profit, so the bang for the buck, especially for subs is extremely high. I like them in particular because they offer proven designs, and they offer a FLAT PACK that is CNC cut, so the incredibly well designed and braced enclosures don't just fit, they match. There is also a LOT of support on the AVSforum.com site for DIY speakers and subs, so feel free to ask questions over there as well from the guys who do a lot of DIY with subs. Many put together DIYsoundgroup products, and work with Parts Express for their drivers. Very highly recommended for DIY subs. http://www.diysoundgroup.com/ http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/

  47. Good morning...well actually afternoon here. Yes, I did...up & down with ground on bottom...finished the new outlet around 11:00 last night. Only major mishap was knocking my vodka & tonic over while stripping romex on the couch. Not acceptable, better not ever hear of an accident like that again ! ........going to let you slide this time only because it was gin. Then I needed to kickback and relax, so was up late. Actually just finished biscuits & gravy and my 3rd cup of coffee. Now the vanity top and faucet & drain. Conflicting info out there on silicon or plumbers putty. Was going to use plumbers putty on the top side of the drain, but after reading the container it says don't use on plastic. It appears to be plastic with the rubber gasket on the bottom side. I don't recall using anything on the drain on the basement remodel I did 4 years ago. Was just going to use a little white pipe tape on the supply side threads. Do you experts concur? I always use plumbers putty but to be honest I probably did not read the directions so maby silicone would be better? Oh almost forgot I hate plumbing

  48. Earl, You can add me to the list of driving Fools. Years ago the Freeway was ice. Traffic was doing 35 mph. Couldn't stand it. Who drives 35 on the freeway? I passed the lot of them in my CJ-5. Then my rear tires passed the front end and I landed on one of the few flat level areas along the free way. Turned in the hubs, drove out and joined the rest of the people doing 35.
