  1. We have yearly inspections in Texas. I think it's a good thing. People will drive on bald tires with belts showing. They will run their brake pads down to the rotors. Yes, I want the people driving around me to have reliable equipment.

  8. We don't have have those stickers here... the ones that show the date of inspection. Once the car is inspected that's it no more inspections till it's re-registered.... I think yearly inspection is the way to go. In Md the windshield is broken down into three section: the non critical area, the critical area, and the acute area... each section having it's own allowable crack or chip.... 3/4", 1/2" and 1/4" .... what How can a state be so damn tough for inspection but you don't have to get it inspected again for as long as you own the car..... again what .... +1 +2 Over the years I've had people decline safety repairs on there cars.... If it's that bad I'll make them sing a waver before the car is driven off my lot... if they don't want to sing a waver I'll tell them I'm calling the state police and file a report!! That crapp ain't coming back on me... Some people think it's a damn joke.... like things don't happen to cars to cause an accident... MKP :-)

  9. Good morning all. Ahhhhhh NO shop/work til next Monday The BOSS and I are just chillin at the house for a bit, sipping on coffee. Well be leaving a little later today. Just got the grandson on the bus. Man it was one crazy busy week at the shop. Didn't get home before 9:00 every night. But all the end of month bills are paid and got the rent money for December....oh yea..... Before we left last night I checked the Pilot over for the trip, didn't really need anything. Just checked tire pressure and fluids also cleaned the windshield and put on some Rain-x. That Rain-x is some great stuff. Also cleaned the shop up to get ready for my return next Monday. I hate walking into a messy work shop. I'm having a tough time trying to sell that Acura RSX I got a few weeks back. I got it all running good and cleaned up... looks and runs great!! Put it on the CL, got lots of calls but people seem scared of the mileage and it not state inspected. what do ya want for $2500... So when we get back I'm going to take it for state inspection... that's a BIG selling point in our state. Md has one of the toughest state inspection in the country. I was a state inspector at one dealer I worked at long ago. The inspections are all state police governed. There is quite a tough written test you have to take( I failed that three times) and then the state trooper comes out to the shop and give a test around a car. You have to show that you know what the he!! your doing. He'll also ask question about the inspection manual and if you don't know the answer you better know where to find it in the manual. I failed the walk around once... He past me the second time. After the Trooper past me the next month he said to me "do you know why I'm such a A$$ hole?" I'm like ahhhh no.... He goes on to explain to me when he allows a new inspector to come into his inspection territory he want's to be 100% confident in his inspector. If the owner of the car disagrees with the inspector failing things on there car, the owner has the right to have the state trooper come out and make the final call on the failed items. He tells me if he gets called out he wants the confidence that he's going to side with his inspectors. The trooper will come out the the shop every month and check over the paper work.... and OMG don't let him find anything wrong... if he does you'll have to re-do the paper work and he might have you bring the car back in for his inspection if it's still on the lot. All the used cars must be state inspected before there sold. The troopers have the power to not only fine the inspectors but they can also put points on the inspectors driver's licence... and if you get caught "selling" a state inspection... your done for..... 1st you'll never be a state inspector in Md again 2nd you'll most likely get 12 points on your driver's licence which means you not driving for awhile. We don't have yearly inspection here... The cars are only inspected if the car is sold. You can sell a car un-inspected but the new owner must get it inspected before it's tagged......Yea... Md. state inspections what a pain... Oh there's one more bonus when you move to the great state of Md. Once your all done getting your car through the inspection you get to pay sales tax on it before you get your tags. That's right....You'll be hit with 6% Md sales tax that you have to pay. I new someone that bought a new Toyota truck here in Md. he paid his sales tax at time of purchase. He moved to FL. for a few years and then came back to Md. He had to get the Toyota inspected and pay sales tax on it again. What a scam... Well I just rambled on quite a bit..... A good Friday to all... MKP :-)

  18. Many times I've alerted people about brake lights not working. Almost all say thanks, some say that they didn't know (how could they if they are in the driver's seal when they are supposed to be on) and a couple have said that they know that they aren't working

  19. When you say inspection are you talking about the sticker they put on the windshield ? Down here there called "brake tags", if so now Mississippi canceled that, it's no longer used. It was BS anyway, one part was inspecting the front glass for cracks that were in the line of view, but most inspectors would just say, that crack wasn't there when I put this sticker on right ?

  25. Pretty fall afternoon. A little chili but I took the bubble for a short ride. Just came in from the patio sitting with Jake and a couple of Evan Williams Small Batch 1783. LF will be making an appearance soon to have salad and mojito salmon from Trader Joes. Finished the bathroom project for now. Hung two mirrors and three towel hooks. Breakfast with HS chums in the morning, staining LF's screened in porch floor afterwards. Sunday early Thanksgiving at a friends house....lots of food and booze. LF will be the designated driver. Oysters at the same place on 12/10. Thinking about Chuck and his bud Baxter......makes me sad. Where is my bud billybob?

We were hungry and man they hit the spot. They sound nasty but boy are they good: Kinda like a flat bread with ground beef, sausage, fried egg. hot dog split in half, jalapenos peppers, guacamole, lettuce and some ham. I think that's it oh and the habanero pepper sauce... I also order mine with extra jalapenos... Oh man it's 3:00 we gotta get the heck out of here.... Not like were gonna be late and like I always say ....... "It's on time when I get there" MKP :-)

  29. When the mandatory helmet to ride a motorcycle was repealed in Ky, a few conditions had to be met. After that and a few $, they gave you a sticker to be on the back of the motorcycle (not an endorsement on the rider's licence) ....which meant that, if I qualified, I couldn't ride a bike w/out a bucket on my head if the other bike didn't have a sticker. And nonqualified riders could ride my bike without a helmet. No rules of the road changed. It was all about the money.

I will however slip up from time to time but last night wasn't one of those times. I've also switched gears from vodka to bourbon lately. Don't know why, maybe the colder weather. 34. I would think that the frequencies produced by the Khorns' mid drivers/horns, and tweeters would be more important for good imaging than the frequencies below 400/450 (depending on the model/year) that are handled by the bass bin. That may be why the placement of absorbing pads, as detailed in my post, about 5 posts ago, and in Chris A's great thread on corner horns, may be helpful. I am also curious if the imaging of your RF 62 IIs, when placed in a corner, would be better if you hung some blankets (temporarily) to the sides of the mid/high horns (as described in my post). As to the magic potion, it my be partly because the front of the center of the Khorn Top Hat is about 2.33 feet out from vertex of the corner, and 1.63 feet from the each side wall, whereas your RF 62 iis may be closer to all of the above, if they are pushed all the way into the corner. That's just a guess, but try them in that position. I don't know if the Khorn's mid and high horns have greater horizontal directivity than those of the RF 62 IIs. I once heard Khorns in a store about 40 feet wide, from about 30 feet away, with no acoustical treatment other than some throw rugs on the floor, and a score of other expensive speakers between them, adjusted for equal SPL. Some of the other speakers stuck out quite a ways, and the ones nearest to the Khorns were closer than 4 feet from the corner, both "no nos." I switched from one to another repeatedly. Each speaker had its strong points, but the Khorns were far and away the best. There was no physical center channel. I'm not usually impressed by imaging, but talk about imaging! The instruments were spread across the whole expanse beautifully. This was true from the approx. 30 foot distance, and from a few other distances I tried, closer and farther away. There was a very high ceiling. One of the pieces of test music was Terpsichore:: Le Bourree XXXII by Praetorius on DG'S Archive ARC73153. The serpent, especially, sounded both more detailed and with more of a bass undertone to the delightfully melodious, but buzzy, serpent sound than with the other speakers --- and you could point to it with one finger, as physicians say. The room, whether by co-incidence or design, is so, so important with Khorns. Mine, in my room, sound extremely good, but not that good!

  37. The AA starts 3dB down (which is why that wire is soldered to "3"). Schu is using the stock setting for the midrange. The numbers on the autotransformers that Al and me use show the actual reduction in output, as opposed to using a numbering assignment that doesn't tell you anything about what the tap is doing - requiring a conversion table. One of Al's better ideas.

  39. For the record, the only logos I can confirm to be made in-house (and not necessarily exclusively) were the clear plastic Rebel plates. It is possible that the clear plastic K-horn logo was also made in-house. The last attachment is his homemade pantagraph for logo duplication.

  40. When you get Klipschorns, push them all the way into the corner. If you get used ones, make sure they have a rubber wall seal of some kind. They may be best if they have a full 5 feet of unobstructed wall on each side, according to one review. To improve imaging, put absorbing pads on the each wall just in front of the Khorns starting where a yard stick pressed flat against the front of the midrange and tweeter section (the "Top Hat") would touch the wall, and continuing into the room for 2 feet. This only needs to be at the level of the top hat -- it is to absorb early reflections from the mid and tweet, since they're so close to the corner. In my layout, I use 2 2'x2' pads to make an absorbing pad 4 feet high, centered opposite the middle of the top hat, but I'm told one this tall is not necessary. I think I remember that Klipsch's Chief Engineer Roy Delgado ("Chief Bonehead" on the forum) told Chris A that it is best if nothing is between the Khorns. The advice in this paragraph comes from, or through, Chris A. Look up his thread on Corner Horn Acoustics. Then, stand at the back of the room, dead center, and slowly walk toward the Khorn wall. Note the places where the imaging, and other important things (tonality, bass, etc) are the best. Do this with several pieces of music -- recordings vary widely in their imaging, depending on type of mic placement, etc. Then pick one of your best imaging places as your tentative main listening position. If you listen alone, you might want a fairly close seat, dead center between the Khorns, if one of your best spots, found via the technique above, is close to the Khorns. If you listen with others, you may want to listen farther away. My Khorns, in a 16.75' wide room, 13.5' apart from tweeter center to tweeter center, sound great from about 8' from the intertweeter line to about 23' from the intertweeter line. We usually listen to them at about 12' from the intertweeter line. I'd put absorbing pads at the first reflection points, as well ( where you can see a reflection of the speaker from the main listening position in a mirror moved along flat against the wall -- at that spot put an absorbing pad where the mirror was). I'd also have a thick carpet on the floor, at least at the first reflection point on the floor. If your ceiling is less than 8.5 feet high, you my want to consider an absorber at the first reflection point on the ceiling. But don't over damp. Few things sound worse than a too dead room. I use diffusers and have some diffusing bookshelves, books, pottery, etc. Khorns were designed to use the corner. I believe it is true that any speaker will gain overall bass in the corner, although some people claim that it will activate room modes a little more. But that's why you strive select your listening position(s) carefully, and use Audyssey or similar. Some people use tuned bass traps, but I've never needed them. Corner placement will also increase headroom, at least in the bass, with any speaker. A speaker located away from the walls, well out into the room, as some audiophiles advocate will be more efficient (in the bass) in a corner. As PWK said, it would be like multiplying your amplifier power by 4 (at least in the bass). In your case, RF62 IIs, may continue to suck in the corners, but do try them with the room changes discussed above, even though they are not Khorns. In the right room, Khorns can trigger your musical Gestalt as few speakers can, as J Gordon Holt, the creator of Stereophile reported. At a recent Klipsch Gathering ( I think two years ago) the group directly compared, in the same room, the sound of Khorns, RF7s(IIs?), and Palladium, and the majority preferred Khorns. My Khorns can produce imaging from excellent to pretty bad, depending on the recording. I have a center channel, basically for movies only, that uses the same speakers that are in the Khorns, but I frequently turn it off for music (i.e., I select 2 channel stereo) because the imaging is better with just the Khorns. With some recordings, that's not true, so I try music with both. Five channel SACD is often great. All that being said, I don't value imaging very highly compared to low distortion, clean extreme dynamics and detailed micro-dynamics, and a bunch of other things that are sometimes called "tonality," "musiality," "air," etc. You might want to consider Jubilees, the corner horn PWK and Roy Delgado designed as a replacement for the Khorn. It has a huge mid/tweet horn, so it doesn't look great in most living rooms (I think it's fine), and therefore never became too popular. There are several different configurations, Chris A has written about his set-up, including Jubilees. He has a picture of them on his page. EDIT: I knew something was bothering me. The conventional sweet spot for a single listener (a starting point for experimentation) would be at the vertex of an equilateral triangle which has the other vertices of the equilateral triangle at at the center of the front grille cloth of each top hat, i.e., at the front each Khorn tweeter, which would also be in a vertical line with the center of the midrange horn mouth. This would mean that the other vertex of this triangle (the main listening position) would be where the lines from the Khorns intersect. I may be wrong, but if you have an 18 foot wide wall, this would not be "9 feet away from the wall," but 12.77 feet from the intertweeter line (which is probably what counts) and about 14.4 feet from the wall. So, you can probably sit at least 5.4 feet farther back than you thought. Here's why: The distance from the center of a Khorn front grille to the side wall is about 1.625 feet. 18 feet - (2)(1.625 feet) = 14.75 feet. So, each side of the equilateral triangle would be 14.75 feet. The altitude of the triangle forms two right triangles inside your equilateral triangle. According to Pythagoras (when he wasn't running from the archers while avoiding stepping on the beans) that altitude would be 12.77 feet, the distance between the intertweeter line and the main listening position. To simulate imaging in corner placement with Khorns, using your RF 62 iis, you might be better off placing the front of their mid/tweeters 1.625 feet from each side wall of the corner, and sit 12.77 feet back from the intertweeter line.. There might not be quite as much bass, but the imaging test may be more accurate. Good luck!

  42. We were originally told to exhaust the pie-slice logos BEFORE going to the so-called laser logos, then things changed and we were told to just use the new logos, and STOP using the pie-slice logos. Before that some speakers got the pie slice (if that was what was in the final assembly person's bin), and those who were out of the pie slice had only the new logos. I am sure this created confusion at the dealers, since they were getting speakers with non-matching logos in each shipment as their orders for the Christmas rush arrived at the END of 1976. ONLY the fine-veneered speakers were made up as pairs! Most of what we sold were decorator Heresys. So about the time the questions started being asked by the dealers, the decision was made to COMPLETELY stop using the pie slice logos, except for special order requests (e.g....some people would have a single cornwall originally bought for a mono system or for a center channel, and later order another one for a stereo system pair). Klipsch prided itself on its valued customers, so we tried to oblige their wants/needs...to the point of even keeping old router jigs around for discontinued Cornwall motorboard lay-outs, in order to make the special order match the already-owned original. Keep in mind that the first time the rectangular logos were used was NOT in January of 76...it was closer to the END of 1976. And the order to totally STOP the pie-slice logo use was as late as December of 1976, but the speakers built for the Christmas rush were MOSTLY built in the late summer through November of 1976. The December-made speakers seldom made it to the dealers until the following year. We mostly shipped truckloads for the "Christmas rush" time frame, and those truckloads had been speakers made, and boxed up to three or so months earlier, unless they were a special order...which generally shipped out pretty quickly. This is how things were every year...we started building like crazy all summer long...to have enough speakers ready for when the dealer orders came in...and it would get to a point where we just had to STOP building because there was no place to put the completed cabinets, awaiting sanding, and no place to put the completed speakers which had been boxed and were stacked all the way up to the roof over in shipping...waiting for trucks to move them out...so we could start building again. Everything was backed up and no place to put anything else. So, they would have us doing other things...and/or we would have a temporary "voluntary" lay-off so that everybody did NOT have to be laid off, until there was something we could do about building MORE speakers again. We built LOTS of speakers while I was there, and that was during a time frame when other audio-related companies were going UNDER due to the economy at the time. Klipsch was no exception, but the workers were EXTREMELY productive in those days! It was nothing unexpected to do 10+ hours a day, M-F and at least a half a day on Saturday...often a whole day on Saturday! It was feast or famine, MOSTLY depending on whether there was enough room to put anymore speakers someplace, while waiting for them to be picked up! And when the trucks started rolling in, we were ALL rocking and rolling LOADING them...to get them THANGS outta the way so we could build some more!

  44. Well said. With all due respect to those who would tell me what I should and should not like, that overbearing air of superiority does get really old, really fast. Please remember that the only person I have to satisfy with my system is me. And in 40+ years of audio as a hobby, I prefer tubes. If anyone prefers something different, I think that is wonderful. Whatever prompts you to listen to more music. This will be my only comment on this particular subject. Now, back to talking about tubes and La Scalas and Cornwalls. Did I happen to state that I really like 845 based SET amps on La Scalas?
