  1. Evening gang Just got done with the under-counter lighting. Everything to do it was finely on site, so one more project done. Wife knows i was giving here some fancy LED's, she does not know they are also on a dimmer. Each of these LED's @full brightness draws .10 Amps, from the Bay.and China, all maybe $10Bucks.

  2. somewhere in these forum archives is a post to me by Amy. It is a picture of one of those ear horns with the Klipsch Logo on it. Her joke was that these were the Klipsch hearing aids.

  3. I woke this morning to a flat tire. Aired it up and drove over to Discount Tire. One screw in the middle of the tread and a nail by the edge of the sidewall. Time for a new tire. Luck = preparation meets opportunity I have the replacement warranty, so I get a free tire. Actually, this is the 3rd tire they have replaced for free in the last year. It was getting time for new tires anyway, so I purchased the other back tire. I prefer to replace tires in pairs. Now for a cup of Sumatra dark roast.

  4. Good evening friends............. Chuck, sorry to learn about all your difficulties... You know, I just had my annual checkup.. My doctor is younger then me, but noting his aging and wondered how I was getting along... Basically, he was happy to have a one on one with his 'star' patient , happily, he admitted that I was one of the healthiest 64 year olds he looks after, no meds and only vitamins, just lucky I guess, take after my dad... Ok, enough of that, BUT, the most interesting thing he said to me was a comment about TEETH... I told him since many of mine were removed some time ago (yeah, I ignored them during my band days on the road - and paid for it later!) and I was thinking of going with dentures at some point.... He looked at me with a smile and said, you know........the longer you keep your own teeth, the more expensive it gets.... I believe he is right.... But dentures are not cheap if you want good ones... The set I was looking at is 'mid grade' and was going to run $9100 at Aspen Dental ! There, well, I hope that makes consoles in some way, as we take yet another round on our tooth topics... Always happy to chime in ..............g

  7. Happy weekend all. Won't check in much today as we drove to Houston last night and spent the evening at my daughter's house. Feels odd as they're not home. They left yesterday for a wedding. We're heading out in a few minutes for a 30 minute ride to a house they closed on this week. We're starting demolition as they're gutting it and starting over. I had to borrow a van from work just to carry all the tools I'd need. I'll see you guys around bourbon:30 tonight.

  14. Discount Tire has had my business for decades. I would not be without the road hazard certificates (RHC). I've lost track of how many tires have been replaced under the RHC over the decades. One of the expensive tires on the car in my avatar was replaced after striking a chunk of metal on Woodward Avenue. I recently learned that Discount Tire will sell you RHCs for tires they didn't sell. One of my son's recently purchased a used car. The Discount Tire tech walked out to the car with his tread gauge, took one look at the "new" tires and put the gauge away. Within a few months the RHC paid off after the son's GF hit a pothole and took out a tire. In Michigan, how did she manage that?

  19. On the cocktails side of the thread, I have tried the smoking mary with the addition of baker bros. twice now. First with vodka, then, on a lark, as suggested on the bottle of the smoking, gin. Bombay sapphire of course---I have to say I am surprised that the gin version is superior to my taste. Less obtrusive than the vodka---much smoother and integrated flavor. Mark if you haven't tried it, I suggest giving it a go. I really didn't notice the alcohol flavor with the gin like I did with vodka, and I am certain I used a little more gin than the vodka version. I do however, notice the alcohol effects of the gin version. YMMV.

  26. Well now wait a minute. 5000 posts and of a sudden I see the BS forum. Now I can take a peek behind the curtain. Looks like I will be celebrating. So Nan gives me a call saying the kitchen is flooded. I am thinking that a pitcock behind the fridge has failed, as while troubleshooting the icemaker about 3 years ago, this same petcock came apart and gave me and the floor a good drenching before the water valve could be cutoff at the well pump. So first place I check is behind the refried. Pitcock in good shape and no water lines leaking. She said also the icetray container in freezer full of water. Was about to move onto other reasons when she reminded me of this. Seems that a freezer bag had managed to slowly wrap around icemaker rod which turns to operate the cube mechanism, thereby freeing up water to oversupply water into freezer compartment. Dang bag took me a 1/2 hour using tools to finally cut amd unwrap. Lecture to her or whoever was responsible for this mishap() is to keep tray flat against rear so nothing could migrate near icemaker. So, so much for that freaky happening which we had not forseen. She could have taken me up on a new fridge when I offered one last year. Of course, I did not remind her of that... Yes, dentists are $$$! Sorry to learn of the death of loved ones mentioned here over the last few pages. As far as work/jobs are concerned, I always looked for jobs with all the work cut out of them. Rare indeed...

  28. My Pleasure, Neil. After reviewing and getting over the shock of how real freaks do this at http://www.78-rpm.com/ , calm down. If you INSIST on playing with a vintage turntable but want to avoid further damage use cactus needles or at least new steel ones rotated out after a couple of plays. There is a reason those TTs had the new and disposal holders. But to be truly shocked at how good they can sound you need a dedicated TT of good quality...in my case, I use an Empire 598 Mark II I got for around 300.00 a decade or more ago. But any good quality vintage Dual, Garrard, or what have you with 78 will work. Last time I checked 2.5-3.0 mil styli for Shure M44 and related carts were still available. I use a Stanton with at 3.0 mil at 5 grams on my Empire. You'll get VERY nice sound using an inexpensive phono preamp like the http://www.phonopreamps.com/tc778eb.html at 70.00 or so. The "78" position is a compromise of most of the main curves used during the 78 period. Bear in mind that acoustic discs use none at all...which explains why they sound so tinny when a curve is applied. Before I learned this I had read that there was resistance from audiophiles way back when electrical recording was introduced and they said it wasn't as good. I was clueless and thought them nuts until I heard an acoustic played correctly, Incredible! The 1922 acoustic recording of George Gershwin performing his Rhapsody in Blue with the Paul Whiteman orchestra has a bari sax on it that is almost transparent straight to the horn. One of my favorites! Now, if you have the bug after doing the relatively inexpensive steps above, add the RekOKut Re-Equalizer, which is something around 300.00 if I recall correctly. You'll go yet another level. It goes between your external phono preamp and line in, and provides almost perfect settings to match all the curves of the entire pre-RIAA period. While they provide a guide to settings for almost every major level and period I rapidly went to just a "set by ear" method that can achieve fidelity beyond my ability to describe. I have a mint recording of Gene Krupa with the Benny Goodman orchestra doing "Swing, Swing, Swing" from about 1944 that is electrifying on my K'horns and leaves many who've never heard a properly played 78 speechless. So, there's the basics. The engineers in the old days had the technological ability to record, but the playback equipment of the time wasn't nearly as good as the source material. We can fix that now and it is very rewarding to the music lover. It allows one to "time travel" and hear great musicians better than they've ever been heard except by those who heard them live. Dave P.S. SHOULD have mentioned that NO mechanical TT can play electrically recorded 78s with any degree of quality. They are strictly for acoustic recordings...which, if you think about it, makes sense. They have no EQ of any kind. The record in the OPs first image is an electrical recording. P.P.S. On looking at this, it is not entirely true. But you'd have to build a cylinder machine or, for discs, use a machine with FLAT phono preamp and several styli/weights specific to the disc involved. Whole Edison cylinder and diamond disc system was proprietary.

  38. Wow...lots of stuff going on lately. MKP....would you recommend driving on that tire? I know a sidewall can't be patched, but if it didn't get into the carcass, could it be ok? Dtel....good one. I'll start shooting with my other hand, at least it wasn't my trigger finger (Barney Fife reference) Gary.....that seems like a lot of damage, that limb must have been pretty high up in the tree. At least it didn't do too much body damage. I like your pipe organ stories and pics. Chuck, sorry to hear about you LF's Mom. Good luck with the dental issues...they can be pretty painful. I finally completed an implant for a front tooth, hope I'm set for a while. We just missed the bad weather. A few tornados hit about 80 miles south of me. Still on the weather roller coaster....70s last weekend, currently a 10 windchill.

  39. Alas, the job hunt continues. It is a tough market here. Especially for senior level management. My sister's unexpected passing a few weeks back has had me doing a lot of soul searching, thinking about life, what-ifs and tomorrows or lack there of. I have always been a work-a-holic. Maybe it is time to slow down and smell the roses? Maybe do something for the fun of it and not for the money. There may be a job out there dealing with audio. Now wouldn't that be a fun gig?

  45. No worries: I stumbled across this forum while surfing the web looking on info to rehab my circa 1980 Heresy pair. The name Bob Crites was brought up and his site led me here. I read extensively before joining and was struck by the egletarian tenor of the group. Expert advice, freely given, tolerance of all levels of fidelity, and tastes in music. Tips on wood working, construction, finishing, electronic mods, engineering, physics, and speaker philosophy. What's not to like? I made this tongue in cheek post to 'get my feet wet' as I rebuild my sound system now that business of feeding and raising a family has stabilized. Once I have gathered and deployed the equipment, in accordance with my wife's decorating wishes, I will no doubt have more serious, pertinent queries on how to maximize my listening experience. Then I will take full advantage of the expertise and knowledge present here. And also the humor. Thank you for your support. JBCODD
