  1. Huge storm last night with heavy rain, high winds and massive thunder. The air is still now and light rain this morning. Working on my second cup of French roast.

  4. Finally checked out the Sansui SP-2000s I got a week or so ago. I hooked them up to my 2A3 Moondogs/JMA Merlin pre. I am flabbergasted! Tons of tight, clean bass. I haven't had time to clan the Akai X-360D I got at the same time as the SP-2000s. It will probably need some going over. Ran errands early, playing toons and having coffee. It's 86 and humid here today. Been almost to 90 all week. Bruce

  7. Yep, we've had the same storm here in KC Thursday, Friday nights. Showing right at 3.5 in the rain gauge with a few hail dings on the pick up hood. Everything else was garaged. Luckily I have access to an expert dent removal man. What's the saying - just like it never happened.

  8. @Innocent_George, yep, the view's why we bought the place. You can decompress pretty well in that room, especially with some hot licks on the Khorns and some cool alcohol in hand. We've had our first "horn party" with the neighbors a few weeks ago and I expect we'll have others this summer. Speaking of reading, that's my pastime. But I have a new problem now because I find it hard to read with music on the Khorns. I keep getting distracted by their amazing fidelity... It's a tough life, id'nit?

  11. Just got back from a trip to southern Canada Monday. My father is faring poorly and is now in his final months. We went down to spend a week at his place in Ontario (Minden), via Ottawa. A very nice visit and realistically the final one. We had a young man we know house sit/cat sit whilst we were away. He was bar none the best we have ever had. The place was as clean and well tended upon our return as it had been at departure. He is something of a musician in his spare time and a music lover in general. Like many younger folk he has a pretty minimal system that he is working on improving but progress has been limited to funds and his contract renewals. This being the case we decided that we will give him the set of RB61IIs and stands that were displaced from the living room by the Ohm Walsh Talls I acquired towards the end of last year. He is very excited and was absolutely gobsmacked when I brought this up. He'll be coming by this Saturday and will transport them to his place. It seemed to me a good use of them, as they are now just sitting doing nothing in the spare room and realistically will not be used in the future. It will be satisfying to have them singing again and helping out a budding audiophile. This is a shot of one of said beasts standing alongside the Ohms upon delivery. Another shot from the holiday season of 2015.

  15. Morning gang, its been awhile, I've been a bit of hermit around here. Thought I would check in and say hi, see how everyone has been doing. We have been pretty busy around here, camping season appears to be in full swing, soccer is done, haven't had much time to even listen to music. Big Stew, sorry about your friend. Well time to hit the ground running, paper to write, graduation party, bachelor/bachelorette party tonight, then tomorrow is my sons bday party.

  22. Okay, I understand that you're trying to trace down what a could have been a demo used Klipsch salesmen. This is in contrast to some wacky questions we get like, "I heard an album but can't remember the name." But as a wild guess based on little information let me suggest Rampal and Bolling. The album was big in that time period. Very good. light jazz. OTOH it is not quite up to screaming flutes bringing the listener to his knees. In rock, Jethro Tull, used flute. "Thick as a Brick" is a rocker but not too much flute. OTOH, "Bouree" by Tull, using flute, is a jazzed up version of Bach. . I'd suggest you row around YouTube for more Tull. You might find your tune. WMcD

  25. In my experience with KHorns, the room is almost everything (remember, you're sitting inside of the bass horn). I had my KHorns in 5 different rooms over an 8-year period and can sum up my experience this way: Everything else being equal... They sound better in rooms with a rectangular floor plan than they do in rooms with floor plans that approach being square. In rectangular rooms they sound best when placed along the long wall. The larger the room the better they sound. The further apart they are (within reason) the better they sound. The more solid the corners the better they sound. Natural corners work best, followed by purpose-built artificial corners (I did this once, adding a half-height section of wall to form a corner, and that turned out to be the best-sounding room I ever had my KHorns in), followed by corners fashioned using large & heavy furniture (typically a bookcase) as one of the sides. In one room with a corner fashioned using a bookcase my KHorns sounded great; in another they didn't (although mostly for other reasons). Avoid rooms with dimensions that are integer multiples of each other. I spent 16 years living in a house with a living room that measured 16 ft wide by 16 feet deep by 8 feet high, and the KHorns just wouldn't work in it. Their corner placement created far too many standing waves at too many different frequencies that were exaggerated by the room's dimensions, and they sounded terrible at any practical listening position (huge frequency-response swings, lack of bass impact, poor stereo imaging, the list goes on...). I finally replaced the KHorns with a pair of Cornwalls (placed away from the corners), which worked far, far better in that room. When used in a "good" room, the experience of listening to 2-channel music through Klipschorns can't be matched by any other speakers I've ever heard (NOTE: I've NOT heard Jubilees). But in a "not so good" room they can be frustratingly disappointing, and can be bettered by any number of less expensive and less demanding speakers, no doubt including your LaScalas — with or without a subwoofer. I'm not saying that your room would be a "not so good" room for KHorns; I'm only saying that in my experience, the more things that are right about it (large size, rectangular floor plan, non integer-multiple dimensions, long-wall placement in natural corners) the better the chances are that KHorns will sound even better in it than your LaScalas do. P.S. For the past 20 or so years I've listened to music exclusively in multi-channel modes through my Klipsch THX home theater system (KT-LCRs and KT-DSs with a JBL 4641 subwoofer), and I'll never go back to plain old stereo, even if my old KHorn system would work in my current (cornerless) living room. FYI, my KHorn system was 3-channel L/C/R with a Cornwall center and a derived mono network built from plans published in one of the "Dope From Hopes", and was a huge improvement over 2-channel stereo.

  27. Old thread but an update... After a month and a half or so later we finally got our schedules to match. Living up north work travel is very common and we have been out of sync. The RB61 IIs were delivered a week ago. He is absolutely blown away and has given his former speakers that these replaced to another friend (domino effect). He is something of a musician and frequents one of the pubs with open mic nights as a participant. The live sound is not what he was used to or expecting. He has been texting me all week as he tweaks the positioning and can't believe the difference is sound and detail. Another member of the Klipsch tribe is born.

  28. Here are @Wolfpack02's horns in their new home. Having so much glass next to the Khorns isn't ideal but they still sound great. Plus we have a nice view while listening. First step when they arrived was to add pipe insulation to the edges of the bass horn (recommended by @codewritinfool). Horns don't fit the room? No problem - hack the room. Luckily, my better half hasn't noticed this. (But she really enjoys the horns so she'd probably be cool with it.) Another of codewritinfool's suggestions was ALK's "Super AA" mod for the Type AA crossovers in these horns. So I ordered parts & modified the crossovers. It's not the world's prettiest layout but it works fine. The change in sound was small but noticeable: mellower midrange and better bass. Maybe it was mostly the new caps, but it was worth the time and the $70 for parts.

  37. This appears to be another perfectly OK thing made bad by the laws. Had some of the stuff when it was legal in Texas, original K2. Very nice and apparently actually pretty much synthetic THC or very close. Then, they made it illegal and the makers kept changing the formula and it eventually apparently wound up pretty nasty. Went the same way as the "real" stuff. Perfectly good pastime rendered illegal and dangerous ignorance. Dave

  38. After we left Ottawa we headed over to Victoria BC. Cindy has been there before but this was the first visit for me. We were off to see her elderly aunt who has had some health issues but seems fine now. A popular site in the area are the Butchart Gardens. This place is very famous in Canada; it is a massive classic Victorian style garden park on the estate of a turn of the last century industrialist. The family still owns and operates it. The climate in Victoria is warmer than anywhere else in the country - they barely get winter at all and temps rarely fall below freezing. People plant and maintain palms in this area. You wouldn't even know you were in Canada, crazy.
