  2. Guess moving to a place where you don’t know anyone can drive you back to a forum. I’m alive and SoCal is a memory. I just found out that I got a farewell gift from The OC -- credit union called and it seems that, before i left town, i used my ATM card at a “compromised” ATM. I checked my online banking account and it appears that the only ATM that i had used recently was the one attached to the credit union building! They didn’t mention that part. I’m not out any cash; but, they cancelled my card and a new one is in the mail. Hopefully, it shows up before the movers do with my stuff--the driver doesn't accept credit card payment. So, i’m much further north...so much so that it was 39 degrees last night. Got some cool photos of my new “backyard” but for some reason when i email myself a photo from my iPhone--i don’t receive it. Trip was uneventful. Except i loaded ALL of my guitars in the Flex with me, so loading/unloading was a hassle; but, there was no way that i was leaving them in the car. One cousin (aged 70) gave me an acoustic that once belonged to her biological father. No markings, no labels on it. Some research indicates strongly that it is a circa 1931 Kay, violin head, archtop, hollow body. I’ll post a picture. Already have people drooling wanting it; but, it is staying put with me. My brother bailed town with me. He’s already back to work here in our new location. He had five places recruiting him and had the opportunity to pick the one he liked best. i can afford NOT to work; but, maybe a part time job just for some social interaction may be a good idea. Me being alone with my thoughts too long generally isn’t a good idea. So, i’m safe and the good Lord smiled on me numerous times during this trek. Including stuff like giving my fridge to my daughter. When i got here i went to the stores to shop for a new one. Found a stainless steel one that i liked; but, didn’t buy it at the time...i wanted to get the keys to the new pad first so i can see the kitchen dimensions. What i didn’t realize was that this place was just totally remodeled and sitting in the kitchen was the EXACT fridge that i has picked out the day before. People seem very nice and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper...just renting until i decide if i’ll stay; but, rent is over $700 per month cheaper and i got one more bathroom in this place. Utilities are going to be half the cost as well. Auto insurance dropped by $500 per year too. Later.

  4. i’m trying; but, not there yet. confused definitely...no idea what to do with my life now. I do have a new venture that i need to focus on. But, not to let any of you down, i’m still being very irresponsible. My household goods haven’t arrived yet, so i had to go out and buy a 60” television so i can watch my Golden State Warriors. Now, i’m going to be stuck with two televisions when the moving guys arrive. I gave away thousands of dollars of stuff before i left, and i’ve spent thousands of dollars already buying new stuff. oh well, that’s a first world problem i guess.

  6. i have a friend in Grand Haven that has been begging me to move back there. Actually this place reminds me of Grand Haven in some ways. But, with three of four kids and seven of ten grandkids in SoCal -- I’m closer when i need to go visit or them come visit me.

  8. i don’t know Jim. I’m a tea totaller now. I didn’t pace myself in life and my pancreas got mad at me--a beer ever once in a while is all that i drink. There is winery in town that i saw; but, i don’t think it was a good one. Naked Winery is the name and their slogan is Let’s Get Naked. I never was one for the sexual innuendo in names, so the product probably isn’t very good. By the way, i saw my cousin on my travels and she RAVED about that Figgins wine (hope i spelt it correctly). She REALLY enjoyed it--thank you again.

  11. LISTENING VS. HEARING I often have older customers tell me they don't want to spend a lot on gear because their high frequency hearing is diminished and they wouldn't be able to appreciate the quality it offered. WRONG! To illustrate the point let me recount an experience I had early on in my audio career. At 18, and just out of high school, I went to work at the local high-end shop (we didn't use that term then, but we handled McIntosh, Klipsch, Marantz, etc., so I guess we'd fit that description today). The owner was a good friend of Paul Klipsch and Paul would visit the shop from time to time. Mr. Klipsch was a pilot and owned a small private plane that he flew regularly. I’m told that instead of headphones to monitor radio transmissions, Paul preferred a midrange horn (or, squawker as he called it) out of or Klipschorn. I can imagine how loud that must have been to hear the radio over the engine noise! Considering that and his rather advanced age, I'm sure Paul had zip for high frequency hearing. On one visit, Paul, and the rest of the crew at the shop were chatting and enjoying some tunes when Paul lept out of his chair shouting "Did you hear that? Play that part again!" We cued the cartridge back a bit and replayed the section, again with Paul exclaiming about what he'd heard - the rest of us struggling to perceive what he was describing. After several plays I could pick up a small amount of distortion that he heard immediately. Here I was - with pristine 18-year-old ears - struggling to hear the minutia that a gentleman approaching 70 picked out in an instant. It was a great lesson and taught me that "hearing" was more of a learned skill than an innate ability determined by physiological assets. The subtleties that a high resolution system can deliver should not be thought of as exclusively high frequency events requiring bat-like ears to recognize, but rather a wide ranging sample of different aural attributes easily perceived and enjoyed by people with a broad range of hearing. Audophiles who’ve trained themselves to “listen” easily hear and appreciate the nuance that a high resolution system can offer. It does not require 20Hz - 20kHz hearing to appreciate and enjoy a high end audio system.

  13. In Hope the midrange horn is still used all through the plant and engineering buildings for announcements and horn sounds for breaks and quitting time. They are enclosed in a plywood box suspended from the ceiling. Why not, it makes sense, PWK was a no nonsense person.

  15. Beautiful place Steve and you look happy. I think the worm has started to turn. Glad you are able to check in with us. Just gave the Volvo a bath while Jake watched. I tried a clay bar on the hood afterwards and the jury is still out on that process. It seemed to uncover even more imperfections. Used it on the windshield as well. Have a great week worker bees. Retirees.....at ease.

  20. @BigStewMan you will figure it out. I think it's impossible to be happy ALL of the time. It does seem as though you are getting there. Just do something you love. That's one of the keys to happiness. I'm sure the "stuff" you gave away was a blessing to those who received it. You made others happy...another key to happiness. Nothing wrong with being irresponsible sometimes.

  22. You are correct Sir. I’m learning first hand just how many ways Governor Moonbeam fleeces the citizens of California. I was the proverbial frog sitting fat, dumb, and happy in the pot of slowly boiling water. I think you were in Reno when i passed though your area (kinda close). Have a cousin about 30 minutes south of Sacramento, stayed a couple of days there.

  26. Thank you so much one and all on your compliments on my new Reference Premier 280F's Chuck, what most do not know is, the first shipment was damaged, but they played fine. dealer said keep them and play with them for now... They have been setup for a couple weeks, and I spent many hours JUST ON PLACEMENT alone! I find you just can't stick them in place and expect the best results.. With that, I experimented with distances, toe in and toe out extensively with the SAME recording, over and over.. Finally found the right combo which produces the WIDE sound stage / stereo image that Klipsch speaks of... They are part of Music Hall and the 5.2 system that is newly installed and TOTALLY separate from the KH's preamps and amps.. And so.my NEWLY rediscovered BRICK and MORTAR local Klipsch dealer replaced them yesterday!, they came in on a pallet Thursday and they worked at their warehouse to part out the replacement pair. That is when I decided it was official and make the announcement... So, they live 14.5' apart and not far off from the KH's. The inconspicuous plot markings are on the floor, so they can be swung away at any time and put right back into place easily. Sorry for the L O N G verbage...... You all know me by now huh? I will post a photo of ONE of the my dealer's showrooms next.....

  27. Here is a picture of some speakers that I just completed. You could call them Cornwall III clones or Cornwall inspired, but they are DIY scratch built speakers. The cabinets are Baltic birch covered in South African waterfall bubinga. They are filled with factory drivers and crossovers, so of course, they sound amazing. I'm trying them in different rooms with different amplification to determine where they are going to stay. I Love this hobby!

  28. I have several times posted information about the $100 million Arts & Entertainment District being constructed in my home town, eighty miles from Hope. Klipsch is in the main venue, and an article on the El Dorado Festivals & Events website might interest forum members. Go to the Blog, then "Searching for that Sound". I hope some of you will come hear for yourselves. SSH

  30. The center speaker in an HT is the most important speaker of all! It is the speaker that all the others are anchored to and where the majority of the dialogue is produced from. Why in the world would you not use one. I supposed I would take no center over a timbre' mismatched one.

  31. I'm currently running 5.1 sound. If I were to reduce from six speakers to only one, this is the order that I'd do it. From least important to most important. -rear speakers -subwoofer -main speakers -center channel (I might be over-emphasizing the importance slightly, but...) If you actually want to hear what's being said in a movie, I'd suggest a center channel speaker.

  34. Good to hear from you Steve. Don't even think about moving to Grand Haven until Michigan fixes no-fault. Your premium would likely go up by $500/year from what you were paying in OC.

  35. The Pella entry door was to be a 2 day job but the crew reinstalled it 3 times. After the first day of supervising I decided to stay on the job. Turns out Pella subs out installation and these guys were a pain in the a$$. After a call to central office they sent down their trouble shooter to straighten things out. We are still waiting on a new sweep that was damaged during the installs Here is the original door. Big improvement.
