  1. not better than a couple of years ago ... pleased that they weren’t worse. i guess my opinion of “eating bad” has changed to the point that what I now deem as eating bad, is still better than days gone by.

  2. Those Lorapetlum look a little different that the Purple plum here, but these are old, I like these plants. We have a sasanqua that went crazy here it got huge, it's about 10' tall and 10' wide, it's called Pink Snow mostly because it make so many flowers it makes the ground pink all around. Just remember to trim it all once a year to help keep it full looking, like azaleas. Looks good. You can see why they call it pink snow

  7. You may have noticed in previous posts I've got a bit of an obsession with the first Boston LP. Too long of a story, but basically one of the pieces of music that has big part of my life for about 40 years. A friend of mine is sort of in the same way. We always joke about it, text each other when we hear any song from the LP "out in the wild". I think he heard one at Lowe's of all places recently. We always rock it way too loud on my Klipsch speakers when he comes to visit from out of state. I'm going to visit him this weekend so a few weekends back I started a little project. I wanted to make him something to frame the LP cover but those dudes on the back with quintessential 70s haircuts simply could not be hidden. Also wanted the cover and no matting to keep it smaller and more LP sized. What to do? I decided on this. Can be put on desk/table or hung on a wall and easily flipped around to display either side. I'm not much of a woodworker but trying to learn in my all too short free time. I messed up two of the four pieces of wood by routing the groove for the LP and glass all the way through the ends forcing me to make a new top and bottom piece (there would have been square holes at each end). Based on my snails pace and buying materials at retail I'm taking orders. $1,000 should cover it and I'll have them for you by Christmas 2020. Solid walnut and dark oil finish. Not perfect but it is the thought that counts, right? Next time double rabbet joints in the corners and dowels.

  8. maybe it's just me. Eating "good" is easy. Only problem I have is getting produce that makes the cut. I have lived in enough places and grown enough to know what "vine ripened" is. Spoiled. I also eat what is in season. Best and as cheap as it will get. I refuse to buy tomatoes. Even heirloom varieties are junk by the time they get to the store. We do have a farmers' market. I know who grew it. I will buy

  10. We did a job once where the lady said I don't want plants that make flowers, it's just so messy, you can't fix stupid.

  11. I worked at a plant nursery for a while one day a lady came in wanting a flowering tree .......................... that didn't make a "mess" I was younger and ... um, more polite. I didn't laugh in her face or send her to get plastic or silk. I would now

  12. This is a old Purple plum Lorapetlum , which is close to the Ruby, they can get big. I need to trim this group alot or it will get tall and in the way of the walkway. I like this plant, it's this color all year, unless it flowers which is bright red/pink.

  13. Nice! wish I had it so easy. I am still clearing rock off the surface of our piece. Filling "baskets" 4ft tall X 1.5ft dia on the fence line. 5 down. I think t will turn into a wall before I'm done or like one of those Inca homesites. I think about those farm fields with the rock "fences" I saw in VA. The poor bugger plowing.... tang! Not again?!?

  15. Mornin' all Got the Olds back. $175 lighter. I look at new cars and all the gadgets in them ... makes me look hard at putting some $$$ into this old pos. Runs good and is reliable. Easy on fuel, too. I figure 30mpg. It does better on pure hwy driving. My mileage isn't exactly an average of city/hwy. Drive 20 miles and pause the car for a stop sign, then go. Slow down for turns or a cow ... Dodging potholes that kinda stuff. Traffic ... uh, no. Went traditional when I bought beans yesterday. ColombianSupremo. Using the end of the Guatemalan this AM. winter has returned. A few days of normal and sub-normal .... back to 80's until the next one, then it's all spring's fault

  23. No we did what she wanted and took her money and moved on. We did an large brick entrance way to a huge house once, the husband loved it but said let me get my wife and make sure it's ok with her. She came out and said I really like the plants but can you change it I was really hoping for a different look. We said sure what were you thinking, she said like at the Exxon gas station where all the plants are in rows. We said come back in a hour, she did and loved it, after she went back inside we asked the husband what he thought. He said he liked it better the other way but said, I have to live with her here's a check. We made the beds high and out of fine ground pine bark, which is very easy to move around to replant, it took less than an hour. Whatever they wanted.

  26. Things do change about ourselves that we can recognize sometimes. Playing at the creeks around here when little I never got poison ivy, I know I had touched it. Barely handled some to pull it up when I was in my early 30s and man that rash on my hands, arms and neck lasted for a week. I know I've never really grown up, that's probably part of it, but the tunes that did not get overplayed on FM from Zeppelin, ZZ, Rush, Skynyrd, Aerosmith, AC/DC and others I like even more. That's just me, you might catch me movin' to some P-Funk occasionally. Sad when folks you saw pics of long ago look like old raisins, "exceeding their Best By Date" is a nicer way of putting it! Reverting to an innocent way from decades ago: "It's a Free Country, and I'll ____ ____ __ if I want to!" Peace & Good Morning Mike, I was just messin' with ya!

  27. Just curious. Why would you need the wire from your crossovers to the drivers to be larger than the wire that's in the crossover itself?

  28. I've always liked Zeppelin but as I've grown older I actually appreciate them more. They are a lot like The Clash in my book. Always changing and trying different things. You can hear them grow as a band from one album to the next. I and II for all the hype are not my personal favorites. You are right that Presence is a hidden gem. I get a kick every time a see a kid under 25 with a Swan Song T-shirt on. I seriously doubt you will see a 20-something 40 years from now with an Arcade Fire, Maroon 5, <insert band here> shirt on. Maybe Foo Fighters, but I doubt that. Different time I know as rock was pretty young. Still I feel that Zeppelin has aged better than even the Beatles or the Stones. They sound dated to me. Zeppelin sounds timeless....and I was a die-hard stones fan from 12 to 40. I think history will be better to Led Zeppelin than Rolling Stone was in the day. Bowie has a timeless catalog as well....but save that for a different discussion. As for Aerosmith. Always loved them. The old drugged up days more so then once they got clean and discovered making videos. Saw a recent concert on TV. They still sound decent but looking like they have exceeded their Best Before Date.

  32. Your right, doing anything without your hearing aids or listening to music you have to be looking everywhere. I cut grass here and my sisters with a tractor about 6-7 acres total and I use earbuds with sound damping ear earphones over that. I can hear the engine and cutter but that's it and it's a strange feeling, I am always looking over my shoulder and all around. But it is fun. 101 and living in a bad spot in Oakland, she must have been tough or at least she has seen alot. Faial would not be as place to get sick I love that joke about granpa, I remember laughing the first time I heard it and it's funny every time.

  33. I sell bulk tanker loads of the stuff. For wastewater use, it is called magnesium hydroxide. It has other industrial uses also, but is excellent for for pH control in wastewater systems. Also, the bacteria like it more than any other pH raising chemical on the market. Go figure.

  41. Yes, I hate those things, they make some serious thorns, if you get stuck it seems to leave a bump for a year. I think it funny when people put them right on the side of a walkway where there small and cute, later they huge and you can't pass on the walkway so they cut them down. Same palm leaf/frond they use for Easter Sunday, don't know why but it is ? Tarheel in that last pic with the brick walkway, the plants look really uneven from the walkway, probably an optical illusion of the pic ? It all looks good I do not like boxwood's so I don't blame you they do nothing, no flowers and when they get older they always look rough. Looks like 3 Firepower Nandina on the side, nice colors in the winter. Is that azaleas or Indian Hawthorn on the side, either way it looks nice. I love new mulch, pine needles does well also and last a long time plus gives you a place to get rid of it. I like the rock border, I did the same by the gravel driveway.

  43. A fascinating individual. His ability to deal with his ALS-like condition was admirable. May he RIP. I spent all day Friday with a friend who is a paraplegic Vietnam War veteran. He was again an inspiration as he drove us around Tucson in his heavily modified Toyota SUV. He enjoys unusual success in Casinos. He described taking significant winnings at Christrmas time and driving around Tucson giving $50 bills to those he felt in need of some Christmas cheer. Observing Hawking, my friend, and others persevere and succeed in the face of adversity, puts the inconveniences in my life in perspective. Now a shameles plug for my friend’s new book, The Reunion by Thomas Conrad. He describes it as a novel, not a memoir. It’s available from Amazon. If you read it, I’d like your opinion.
