  2. I've been grounded for a while here. Oldest's SUV puked so she's been shopping for a month. She works at home and shuffles her two kid's back and forth to school while he works out of town daily. So she's been driving my old Maxima. It's cool but... I swear she was getting even with me. lol Finally cut a deal on a Ford Escape and picking it up Tuesday. She always has a plate full and it seems that a vehicle was on the back burner til she got time. Seriously? Kids. Next warm day I get to shovel out the big stuff from the grands then break out the blower on the interior. Shop vacs? Blah, you're done in 5 minutes and won't believe the money that blows out. Last time I found a 20 from somewhere. Blowers are slick and ya'll know I'm outta the box. Only air show around here is life flight slipping in and out almost daily. Years ago a local guy was one of the first to fly a Stealth. He'd slip home to see his parents and fly into an Air Guard base about 20 miles away park it and his parents would pick him up. They'd spend the day and he'd fly back to his air base. Ya always knew when Bob was home cause he'd make a low pass over his parents house a couple blocks away to let 'em know to pick him up. Warp 3 every time and you could almost see the rivets in the skin. Ya ain't gonna bust a one star for slippin under the limit on a fly by. Sure did draw the attention cause most of Duckburg wondered what, who and why it happened. lol Back to the coffee. Think I've got it runnin again. Cleaned it again and thought it was gonna blow for sure the way it sounded. Workin fine now but I never did see anything in the carafe. Baffled in Duckburg!

  7. A few photos of a tube amp project completed recently. Two channels, about 20WRMS/ch into 8Ohms. Based somewhat on the Scott 299C output stage but using a solid-state, HV power supply design capable of substantially more power than is required for the push-pull 7591 pairs. Chassis CAD files were sent out for quote, the supplier (New England based) responded with pricing for larger quantities than I was considering. Placed an order for a small lot of chassis assemblies. All metal chassis assemblies are best for RFI/EMI/noise immunity. The chassis assembly is the high-cost item in the build. Uses oversized Hammond or Lundahl output transformers. Still waiting on a few finishing touches (knobs, graphics). Was considering silk screening the top plate but perhaps some other time.

  8. Thanks guys. I've been looking at listening bars around the world for inspiration, and I've seen mostly La Scalas, Khorns, Heresys, and Cornwalls. I see all of these on used sites, and I'm wondering what set of initial questions I can ask sellers before trying to meet in person and check them out (my follow-up question will be, what to look at/check when meeting in person... ) This is my bar layout, I'm aware I'll need more than one set of speakers, since the seating areas are spread throughout (marked A, B, C):

  9. The Bubble got a salon treatment this week. The transmission was leaking fluid so it got a new pan with gasket and bolts, a new filter to filter 8 quarts of fluid, and oil and filter change, air filter, cabin air filter, wiper blades, topped off the coolant, state inspection. 12 year old Z4 with 41,000 miles. A 35is twin turbo, with a Burgar JB4 tune. An in practical car but it's daddy's baby. That's about all my excitement and most of my money for the week.....

  14. McIntosh MC901 single channel dual mono amplifier. 1 mono output is SS 600W for LF section, other output in s 300W valve for HF section. https://www.mcintoshlabs.com/products/amplifiers/MC901 “Vacuum tubes do not perform at their best when they are amplifying lower frequencies that are not being used by the loudspeaker. With the MC901, the vacuum tube amp will not be burdened with low end reproduction as the solid state section will drive these frequencies. The two amplifier sections of the MC901 are designed to work together in a synergistic relationship and are specifically engineered to assure that each section only amplifies its intended frequencies. Each amplifier section has its own discrete power supply so neither siphons power or performance away from the other. All of this results in easy bi-amping with unparalleled performance and sound reproduction from your speakers.”

Vintage warbirds flying with modern aircraft.... the prop planes air going full tilt and the jets are having a hard time going slow enough w/o stalling... 20. Nice job! I picked up an Ibanez Gio Strat style a few years ago for $20 that has a nickle sized chunk out of the finish. Unfortunately, the finish is about the thickness of a heavy guitar pick, a firemist periwinkle color, and I haven't figured out a way to repair it. I think I'm just going to have to try to strip it down to bare wood and paint it.

  21. I would use a multi-channel or 5.1/5.2 set up with multi channel processing for immersive sound. or you can just use 2-channel... with a hornloaded subwoofer

  34. I just received my pair of Forte IV's after having Forte II's for years. Before I purchased the IV's, I decided to go the small speaker route and purchased a pair of the new Mission 770's with a subwoofer. As the nice as the 770's sounded with exceptional detail but very polite, I was missing that live Klipsch sound that fills the room with ease. So I traded in the Mission's with a more than fair trade-in value for a pair of Forte IV's. I know I still have to break them in but I have found that the IV's are not as fussy when it comes to speaker placement compared to the II's. My listening space is 18.5 x 10 x 7.5 and I have the IV's 12'' from the back wall and 9'' from the side wall with a slight toe-in (for now as I will still be play around with speaker placement). I ran the speakers through my Sansui Eight Deluxe which is a great match but I also want to test with my Sansui Six as I think those Sansui single digit series receivers are great with Klipsch speakers. I did switch them to a Yamaha S-1200 which kind of opened them up a bit and the bass was more than satisfying which worried me because I ran the Yamaha on other speakers and the bass kind of fell short. Also the IV's sound better on low volume on the Yamaha than my II's ever did which is why I would switch the II's to the Sansui to activate the loudness button. So far, my impressions from my brief listening session is that the IV's are not a bright as the II's. They are slightly more detailed than the II's but I am sure they will reveal themselves after they have been broken in. I decided to switch on the subwoofer to see how it sounded but found out the bass is more than sufficient on the IV's leaving my subwoofer futile. However, I think the bass in the II's is a little heavier kind of leaning towards the boxier Cornwall bass sound but that could be the way II's were situated in my listening room. No complaints from me on the IV's bass. I know I need more time to test these babies out but my expectations have been exceeded because I was a little hesitant that my listening room would not accommodate the IV's but I think I can rest easy that they have found a home with a more than happy customer.

  36. I do think 2.1mm (12 American Wire Gauge) wire will be enough. What amps and preamp are you using? Some people once thought long, especially balanced (3 wire microphone cables) and short speaker wires were the ultimate. Can you put your power amps on or behind your La Scala's and run long cables to them? I use 3 pair twisted, then braided CAT 5e cables for speaker wire. They amount to about 2.3mm (10.5 AWG) wire. The insulation and all that braiding results in a low resistance, capacitance and inductance speaker cable. They are about 5 meters long. I could not hear a difference between old 12 AWG Monster cable and my homemade wires. But they look good! I also failed a double-blind test at Klipsch HQ in Indy with similar cables many years ago. Klipsch said their braided CAT 5 was -3 dB at 300 kHz! My bottom line is that when the resistance is low enough and inductance and capacitance are not significant, you have a good speaker cable. Buy a large diameter stranded wire and don't worry.

  37. It's good of you to offer the parts here, rather than fleabay or other places. This place used to be a great go-to place to get help from knowledgeable members. As a way to pay back the help that was offered, I still list what I have to offer on this forum first. It wasn't long ago, there were people on here looking for what you're offering.

  42. Fixed so it's a link. This is better than coming out of the headphone jack at the top of the iPod, but not because it bypasses the internal DAC. Rather, it bypasses the internal volume control, which is the source of considerable sound degradation from an iPod/iPhone. And joshjp is certainly correct about the impact of how the music is stored. If possible, store the music uncompressed. If you can't hold enough that way, go for lossless compression. And if, heaven forbid, you have to use lossy compression, keep the bit rate at 256 kbps or higher if at all possible. MP3s at less than 256 kbps might as well go through the volume control, not worth much other than background music at that point. All IMHBCO (in my humble but correct opinion) of course. [] Lou

  43. I dunno. Sonos for streaming, not obsessive, not an "audiophile". Maybe he doesn't want the inconvenience of tubes? RobRob, you understand that a tube amp takes awhile to warm up after you turn it on before it's ready to play tunes? Just trying to make sure we get the trade-offs out there. Lou

  46. I haven't heard the Klipsch subs, but of those I have heard (or have heard a very close relative): Hsu VTF-2 MK4 SVS PB12-NSD SVS PC12-NSD All will reach 18 Hz and all have standby mode. The SVS subs are $769 for the box, $749 for the cylinder. The Hsu is $519. For the SVS subs shipping is included in the price. For the Hsu, shipping is additional. And they all come in "any color you want so long as it's black". The Klipsch sub may be a better match, but I will offer my opinion that there's not much to timbre matching at subwoofer frequencies. 47. Let me second Bill's welcome to the forum. I've got H1's running from a Marantz 1060. Originally I set the bass control to about 1:00, mid to 12:00, and treble to 11:00, loudness off. This was not bad, not what I would call bass-shy, but the H1's do only go so deep. Added in a McIntosh MC7100 with the Marantz functioning as a preamp, and this tightened up the bass somewhat, but of course didn't deepen it. So I added a Hsu VTF-2 MKIII, speaker-level inputs, crossed at 60 Hz, and put all the tone controls back at 12:00. For me, that was the ticket. No right or wrong answer here, but like Bill said, tone controls won't make the Heresy's (I or III) dig any deeper. Just depends on what your ears need. Lou
