I just recently bought LaScalas too! I hear you about the “value of a dollar” mentality. Anything over a weeks take home pay is a big decision. I have NO regrets about that decision though. And FUN(!) is about the best way to describe them! Heresy’s (any iteration) at ear level, near-field, with some bass boosting really deliver the goods. But after a few years of going hard on the Klipsch journey I have found no use for bookshelf speakers, it boils down to whatever there is enough physical space for is simply the best choice. I have owned Heresy 1’s and 2’s, still own Forte 2’s and Tangent 5000’s (which I don’t use..) yet every time a pair of Heresy's comes up for sale in the $250-300 price range you mentioned, my mind starts trying to rationalize where I would use them! It was stated in another forum “Heresy’s are the gateway drug to Klipsch” and I couldn’t agree more.

To the OP (original poster), do you have Heresys now, or are you trying to figure out a game plan? I had Klipsch RB-61’s and an RC-52 under my TV in the master bedroom, sold them and stuck a pair of Cornwalls under the TV. No love lost there. Bigger is better and I still look to the sidewalls to see where the sound is coming from.

Funny thing about efficient speakers... You do not NEED a lot of power, BUT the woofer ALWAYS knows what to do with the extra watts. And it is noticeable. “Commanding” is the word that comes to mind.

There are a few things in life you will regret not doing. Missing this chance is way up there. You will not lose any money if you decide down the road they are not for you. Those are plug and play!

I recently stumbled across a listing on fleabay that piqued my interest. The listing was for a (another) previously unknown to me pro model, the KP 320. It had a K-62 on what appeared to be the same horn as the K-61. I think the the K-53 and K-62 are also the same as the 57 and 61. I thought I had read on here the K-52 was different (better?) but used the same diaphragm.

I lucked into a pair of RF-3’s years ago. Very capable speakers. Had them in the master bedroom and never heard them as bright or lacking in bass. Never felt the need for a subwoofer and I was using an old Onkyo HT receiver. I had both the bass and treble bumped up. If it is an HT receiver make sure the “speakers front” are set to large and/or subwoofer crossover is set as low as possible. Do you have access to the manual for your JVC? It is likely something easily resolved.

If they work and aren’t too scratched up I would meet him halfway in heartbeat. If they look better than the pictures, maybe more. Condition really sets the price on anything. I still have yet to hear a pair of Chorus II’s. Bob Crites (qv) has stated he had difficulty hearing the difference between his Cornwalls and Chorus 1’s. And Chorus 2’s are a step or three up from the Chorus 1’s.

Maybe the seller swapped out the magnets? I really just wanted the tractrix lenses as I had spare K-79s. I think the K-792’s came with the crappy black poly diaphragms too... Here are the two magnet structures side by side.

The Crites titanium diaphrams are the correct (and BEST!) replacement. I recently put them in a pair of K-792’s I got off Ebay for a song. They now reside in my Forte II’s. The K-792 have the same (smaller) magnet as the K-76. With a little filing to the top of the lens where the bolts attach, the larger magnet from a K-75 (or K-79) will fit that lens and effectively give you a K-107-ti. The screws are longer on the K-792 to accomodate the phase plug insert not present on a K-79/75/76.

Congratulations SiliconTi! How do you like them so far? I love my '84 Cornwalls. The 50" flatscreen sits on top of them in the master bedroom. They dwarf the TV! What version of the K-33 is in yours? Mine came with the square magnet, but a pair of '85 Cornwall 1's I later found came with the round magnets.

It is the speaker relays. Very common problem with many amps after time. If I “crank it” right after power-on it resolves itself sooner. I have three NAD 372s, one of them does the same thing. Always the right channel. Now that I am running LaScalas I have no need to bridge the amps and am using only one amp. I flipped a coin and picked one of the amps that works fine. There are many posts about fixing this, one even suggests a better relay for DIYers. I will be going tubes before I spend another dollar on SS though!

I was under the impression the square magnet K-33 digs lower than the round magnet version. I believe Bob had run some tests and the results are somewhere in this forum. One thing is for sure, the Cornwall cabinet knows what to do with the lower Fs.

Is that a resin horn for the mid as well? I don’t think they were stock in the 1980 LS. Your winning streak continues!

Didn’t Roy Rogers say “he never met a Heresy he didn’t like”? I know I haven’t. I preferred the HII over the original. Neither one was modified. With the titanium tweeter diaphragms they would have been even better. If I didn’t have three pairs of Cornwalls in some iteration, and a pair of LaScalas, I would probably have kept the HII’s. I keep kicking myself for not jumping on a pair of HIII’s that sat for over a week listed at 1100 bucks (CDN!). Could have easily recouped the cost down the road... Somebody else on here, or another forum, said it best recently: “Heresys are the gateway drug to Klipsch!”

Your wife is right. You have merely succeeded in proving to her, through your convictions, that you are not wrong. That is the best any of us can hope for! ...that and the chance to complete a project like yours!
