On the spur of the moment I took the last ferry back to Mackinac Isalnd, spent the night on a friend’s boat, and then rode back to East Lansing in two days.

Mackinaw Island to East Lansing in two days? You da man.

We have thought about bikes for few years now, but thought we would probably get run over on these local roads, so considering our age decided not to.

I have a Raleigh Tamland 1 and that is now my most ridden bike. I do take it off road  a lot and had the gearing changed to a 40-12 cassette. There are some steep off road climbs around here and my old legs (is that a theme around here?) need all the help they can get. The geometry of the Tamland is much more relaxed than a road bike, the steel is forgiving, the wider tires are nicer imho, and the bike itself has been very reliable.  Tamland 1 in back, Bianchi Freccia Celeste in front. Tamland is  a 56 frame, Bianchi is a 57. Enjoy your new ride!

=== yep, Tamland 1. Mines kind of a burnt orange, xxl frame.

Start with short rides on your bike and you will get your butt muscles back

go bowl a few games.   If your one butt cheek isn't sore, you are in shape.

You don't need an invite.  Just show up.  Plenty of room at the casa.

I agree with your decision Elden.  Unless there are dedicated bike trails, we’re too old, and too smart, to mix it up with distracted drivers.

We took longer coming back, due to a stop for ice cream.  Now my coccyx is screaming at me.

Just alot of backroads here, and drivers not paying attention. But really one thing that also bothers me is if I were riding along and without looking moved more to the center at the wrong time it would be bad. The roads are empty 90% of the time which can give you an impression no one is coming and one simple mistake and all this hard work of taking care of myself is over.  OK I lied I don't take care of myself, but not to the point of being run over.

I don't even think about bicycles... except how I might be able to use those nice bearings and drive for something... like a little wind turbine

I would think so, I am.

I could say there is a lion in the yard looking to eat someone and she happened to be looking at her phone, she would walk out and have no idea.
