if I ever win, I'll take you all to McDonalds and you can all share a large water. Yeah, that sounds like a cheapskate ... I know that water is free; but they charge for the cup and I did mention that would be a large water, thus a LARGE cup.

But, don't get too thirsty just yet ... I generally don't buy lotto tickets.

Ever since I gambled my way OUT of poverty, I'm doing alright.  Actually, the most I've ever won in the lottery was $50 off a $1 scratcher. I did hit a $2500 jackpot at Mandalay Bay in Vegas -- not a bad return from a quarter machine (50 cent bet). Got 10X, 10X, Red Seven. Best part ... I won that the morning that I was leaving, so I took it all with me ... actually more, because I left the slot machine and dropped $50 on a blackjack table and played a few hands, cashed in $400 -- then left for home.

I was in a casino one morning in Reno. Went upstairs where the restaurant was. Walked past a nickel slot machine and the entire tray was full of coins -- not a soul in sight. Waited around a bit and nobody ever showed up, so I started playing the machine.

Always remember that trip because my cousin told me that when the chef (who could see us through the opening into the kitchen) saw how much ketchup I was putting on my hash browns and eggs, he told that chef looked like he was going to come through the window and clobber me. But, like I always say, consider it a compliment, I'm not going to waste perfectly good ketchup on crappy food.

Hey John......warm enough here to wash the bubble.  Got it done.  Off to lunch later with about 10-12 oldtimers who meet each Friday.  I know a couple of you gents will be perched on the edge of your seat wondering what I had for lunch so I'm going to spoil it as I know the menu well.  Country style steak and rice with a Greek salad.  They use tenderloin and it can be cut with a fork.  Greek restaurant.

Another thing you will want to tell your grandchildren tonight is that this is Tarheel's 17th day without alcohol!  No particular reason other than giving the liver a holiday.  That should end this weekend in that LF is giving me one of my presents early.  A bottle of Proof syrup for making Old Fashions the easy way.  32 drinks for each bottle.  Now to choose the liquor.  The last time I had one at a bar the tender used Bulleit Rye instead of Bourbon.  May stick with that.

So there you go.  You can rest easy now!

Dry January is right around the corner for me.

How is that Proof stuff.  I almost ordered some so that I could use it with some of the bourbons I'm not enamored with.

Don't know....this will be my first bottle.  Good ads though.

Hi @Tarheel

All of the good mom & pop restaurants here were Greeks running and cooking like my life long neighbors.

Got a lot done yesterday that the weather helped out with, the Leonard is half empty, trash pickup was yesterday both 50 gal dumpsters were full again last night and my staging room is full of boxes again.

When I couldn't find any more of the Elijah Craig that I love within fifty miles of here I managed to get the last 12 year single barrel Knob Creek one place had. Their 9 year does not compare and the 15... don't care for really after getting spoiled by the EC!

* Must have the bitters in it already but I did not see mention of it at their site. You use a piece of orange rind in yours?

Yeah I'm sure the bitters are in it with simple syrup.   Other than that I don't know.  When I was making them from scratch I used trulia (sugar substitute) in water and then frozen into real small ice cubes.  Got a couple of bottles of bitters if I need extra.  Yes I use orange rind.

This is pushing the sweetness thing a bit for me in that I usually have liquor on the rocks with nothing else.  And I'm with you John on the Elijah Craig.

There's a store around here that buys whole barrels after taste testing a dozen or so. Their picks are incredible, so much better than the shelf equivalent.  I just got 2 bottles of their EC pick this week.  About a month ago I was lucky enough to get 2 bottles of their Weller full proof.

I'm a big fan of the KC 12 year.  Got a 15 year at home but haven't tried it yet.
